Premier League legend backs Irish star to continue record-breaking haul at Royal Ascot

Dublin Live10-06-2025
Royal Ascot is the pinnacle of the flat-racing season, with some of the world's best jockeys and trainers arriving in Berkshire for five days of top-notch horse-racing action.
This year's event begins on Tuesday 17 June, with talent from Europe, Australia, Japan, the Middle East, and the United States all competing for a slice of the huge £10 million prize pot.
And former Arsenal star and horse racing fanatic Ray Parlour believes Irishman Aidan O'Brien will extend his remarkable win rate at the famous meeting later this month.
The Ballydoyle star is already the most successful trainer in Royal Ascot history with a record 91 winners. He scooped six wins at Royal Ascot last year, making him the leading trainer at the event - the 13th time he has achieved the feat in his career.
'Aidan O'Brien is the best flat trainer at the moment,' says Parlour. 'He has so many top horses in his stable who can win the sprints and longer distance races, so naturally, he's one to follow.'
The ex-Gunner says he'll be focusing on Thursday's showpiece Gold Cup, where O'Brien will be looking to add to his record-breaking eight wins in the race.
His horse Illinois is 7/5 favourite with NetBet Casino and Sport Ireland to triumph ahead of Candelari at 7/2 and Trawlerman at 21/5. Another O'Brien starter in the race is Jan Brueghel, priced at 26/5.
'Illinois is a good horse who may make it a very interesting race and could come out on top in the Gold Cup,' adds Parlour.
The two highest-earning races are the Prince Of Wales's Stakes and the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes, with a whopping £1 million handed to the winner of each race.
In the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes, Lazzat is the 7/2 frontrunner, Inisherin at 24/5 and O'Brien's Storm Boy at 6/1.
Ascot's opening race is also highly rewarding, with the winner taking home £750,000. With John and Thady Gosden as the trainers, Parlour plans to keep a close watch on Lead Artist, expecting Oisin Murphy to ride again.
Just last month, Murphy guided Lead Artist to a thrilling victory at Newbury, where he narrowly defeated Dancing Gemini in the closing moments of the race.
Now, the two horses are set for a rematch at Ascot, and Parlour is confident Murphy will replicate that winning performance in Berkshire.
'In the opening race at Ascot, Lead Artist is a horse I know won at Newbury and could go very well in the Queen Anne Stakes,' he says.
Lead Artist is 26/5 with NetBet Casino and Sport Ireland to win the race, just behind Dancing Gemini at 9/2 and the favourite Rosallion at 7/2.
Four-time FA Cup winner Parlour is also tipping jockey Ryan Moore for more success at this year's event. The 41-year-old has won the leading jockey title 10 times at Ascot and set a post-war record of nine winners for a single Royal Ascot meeting in 2015.
'Ryan Moore is such a great jockey, too, and he proves time and time again the quality he has in the saddle,' he said.

'Royal Ascot is a superb spectacle and an icon of British Sport,' says Parlour. 'It gets the Royal treatment as well, so it's 100 per cent up there for sure as one of the year's best events.

Nathan Collins says Ireland ‘in a positive place' under Hallgrimsson as he shares exciting verdict of World Cup hopes

Ireland begin their qualifying campaign in September WORLD BEATERS Nathan Collins says Ireland 'in a positive place' under Hallgrimsson as he shares exciting verdict of World Cup hopes NATHAN COLLINS does not believe it is "bullish" to suggest Ireland have put themselves in a position to qualify for the World Cup. Heimir Hallgrimsson's men begin their pursuit of qualifying for next summer's competition at home to Hungary on September 6. 2 Nathan Collins believes Ireland are in a good place to qualify for the World Cup Credit: Stephen McCarthy/Sportsfile 2 Heimir Hallgrimsson and Collins have both been positive about their chances Credit: Stephen McCarthy/Sportsfile The more truncated qualification campaign will conclude with a trip to Budapest in November, with games home and away to Portugal and Armenia in between. The mood music around the team has changed in recent times, particularly after their two-legged Nations League relegation play-off win over Bulgaria in March. And Collins believes they are in a good place heading into the campaign. He told SunSport: "I think the way it's been since the start of last year, it's been positive for Ireland as a whole. "Our results, the way we've been playing our football, it's been positive. I think we're in a good place overall. "The fact that a lot of players have been playing football before then, a lot of players in a better place this time than potentially last year. "It's all really good and well for Ireland football. "It's exciting times. We've given ourselves a chance and that's all you can do before it kicks off." A common concern for the Republic of Ireland has been the level to which the senior squad are playing. To this end, this past summer has seen some progress, even if the number of Ireland players in the Premier League (12) is down on 2024/25. 'Don't say that on camera' - Nathan Collins' admission about Caoimhin Kelleher's move leaves Heimir in stitches Nathan Collins will be captaining Brentford, managed by ex-Ireland assistant Keith Andrews, and has been joined by Caoimhin Kelleher after his move from Liverpool. Josh Cullen, meanwhile, will be skippering Burnley after they were promoted from the Championship. Seamus Coleman is the Everton club captain, and is joined on the books at the Merseysiders by Mark Travers and Jake O'Brien. There are 47 Irish players at Championship clubs, more than any other country. Quartet Dara O'Shea, Chiedozie Ogbene, Sammie Szmodics and Jack Taylor are seeking a return to the top tier with Ipswich Town after they were relegated last season. Bristol City also have a heavy Irish influence, with Jason Knight leading the pack, while Finn Azaz will be looking to have another strong year with Middlesbrough. Gavin Bazunu is back from a long-term injury and will be Southampton's No1 this season. On the continent, Troy Parrott continues to impress at AZ Alkmaar having scored six goals in his last three games including a brace in their Eredivisie opener win over Groningen last weekend. And Evan Ferguson will be looking to relaunch his career in Serie A after signing for AS Roma on loan. HIGH LEVEL Collins added: "I think it's great that a lot of players are playing at the higher level but it's football. Everything can change. "We could have more next season or we could have less. That's what happens. "Football chops and changes so quick and we can move around so quickly. "The fact that we do have a lot now with a lot of players playing regularly and that's the main thing before we go into this campaign is always a positive. "It's nothing to worry about for the next few years." Heimir Hallgrimsson has been positive about Ireland's chances of getting to the 2026 World Cup. The Boys in Green have not been to the tournament since 2002, while they have not been to a major competition since Euro 2016. Collins shares that positivity and believes he and his gaffer are not being bullish in saying so. He said: "I wouldn't say bullish. I'd say that we all have a similar feeling that it is a good opportunity to get to a World Cup. "It's different for Heimir because his whole job is focused on Ireland. We have the Premier League or Championship to worry about. "When it comes to the round, we're all in a positive place and we're all excited. We all think we've given ourselves an opportunity."

David O'Leary details how he learned of Leeds United sacking

Once upon a time, David O'Leary was one of the hottest young managers in British football. The Republic of Ireland manager stepped into the breach at Elland Road following George Graham's departure for Tottenham Hotspur. O'Leary was just 40 years of age when he made the step from assistant to manager at Leeds United in 1998 having served under Graham for three seasons. It was expected to just be a temporary stay with Martin O'Neill highly sought after. Instead, O'Leary remained at the club until 2002, and during his four-year stint as Leeds boss, he led the club to the highest heights they had seen in years. He finished inside the top-five in his three full seasons in charge of Leeds, with his crowning achievement coming in 2001 when his exciting young team featuring the likes of Rio Ferdinand and Alan Smith reached the semi-finals of the Champions League. (Image: PA) The hero of Italia 90 had been expecting to take charge of Leeds for a fourth season when in the Summer of 2002, he was handed his P45. Recalling the incident in an interview with The Telegraph this week, O'Leary explains how he was at the training ground doing some work before going on holiday when his phone rang and he was called into the chairman's office. 'I honestly thought we were going to be talking about summer transfers," says O'Leary. "I go in and Peter [Ridsdale, then Leeds chairman] says: 'That's it, it's over. You've taken us so far, but we need someone to take us to the next stage.' Which was Terry Venables. 'So I see his telephone on his desk and I ask if I can make a call. He says: 'You want to ring your wife?' Well, if I'm honest I've never consulted Joy once on any football decision. She's just not interested. No, I'm ringing my solicitor Michael Kennedy. He answers and I say: 'I'm just in Peter Ridsdale's office. He's fired me so I'm handing the phone to you so you can discuss things.' I walked out the room and that was that.' While Leeds failed to win a trophy during O'Leary's tenure despite spending massive amounts on transfers, the Arsenal legend had secured European football in each of his seasons at Elland Road. Terry Venables replaced O'Leary right at the time when the club's financial issues were coming to a head. Within weeks of his arrival, Rio Ferdinand was sold to Manchester United for a world record fee for a central defender. David O'Leary at an Arsenal match in 2024. (Image: (Photo by Crystal Pix/)) Jonathan Woodgate was sold that January, and with Leeds in serious relegation trouble, Venables was sacked that Spring. The club eventually avoided relegation but went down the following year and within five years, Leeds had dropped to League One. Despite the nature of his departure, O'Leary - who was awarded £2 million in compensation after taking a wrongful dismissal case against the club - holds no ill will. 'You can't argue with a chairman when they are going to fire you. You're not going to change their mind pointing out your record. 'I had a brilliant time at Leeds. And when I go back there, I get such a great reception. "People pat me on the back and congratulate me for getting to the Champions League semi-final. Which is nice of them, but I didn't win it did I? I didn't even get to the final. At the end of the day, success is about winning trophies.'

‘I've been asked to do that and I've turned it down' – Rory McIlroy on US captain Keegan Bradley's Ryder Cup dilemma

The Irishman, Europe's leading points scorer in their victory in Rome two years ago, said the idea had already been raised with him but he rejected it out of hand. McIlroy, aged 36 and currently world number two, has plenty of time left at the top as a player, but it is a dilemma facing United States captain Keegan Bradley, whose form this year has elevated him to 12th in the world and 10th on America's qualification list. 'I've been asked to do that and I've turned it down,' said McIlroy, who was the first player to automatically qualify for Europe's team for next month's event at Bethpage in New York. 'The idea of me being a playing captain sometime soon has come up and I've shot it down straight away because I don't think you can do it. 'If you'd have said it 20 years ago I'd say it was probably possible to do, but how big of a spectacle it is and everything that's on the line in a Ryder Cup now, I just think it would be a very difficult position to be in. 'There's a lot of things that people don't see that the captain does the week of the Ryder Cup, especially now that the Ryder Cup has become so big. 'The captain's only going to be able to play one session on Friday, one session on Saturday. Would you rather not have a player that has the flexibility to go twice if he's playing well?' The idea of me being a playing captain sometime soon has come up and I've shot it down straight away because I don't think you can do it Rory McIlroy On Thursday McIlroy will tee off alongside world number one Scottie Scheffler in the BMW Championship at Caves Valley Golf Club outside Baltimore. The Ulsterman opted to skip the opening event of the FedEx Cup as he knew he was already guaranteed a spot in the PGA Tour's season-ending Tour Championship next week and that drew some criticism. However, McIlroy argued his year is far from over as, in addition to the Ryder Cup, he will head back to the DP World Tour for a number of events, including the Irish Open and BMW Championship at Wentworth, before trying to win his seventh Race to Dubai title in November. 'A lot of the guys aren't 18 years into their professional career. I feel like I'm in a little bit of a different position,' he added. 'I'm playing nine times between now and the end of the year, so I've still got a pretty busy stretch coming up and I just think that extra week off will do me good with the events coming up.'
