Rahul gets bail in defamation case
The bail was granted by Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Alok Verma on production of two sureties of Rs 20,000 each.
The defamation complaint was filed by Uday Shankar Srivastava, a retired director of Border Roads Organisation ( equivalent to the rank of colonel in the Army).
The complaint states that on December 16, 2022, Gandhi, while addressing various media personnel and the public during the Bharat Jodo Yatra, mentioned the clash between the Indian Army and the Chinese Army on the border of Arunachal Pradesh on December 9, 2022 and that some of Gandhi's remarks were 'derogatory'.

Total area sown under kharif crops in India crosses 829 lakh hectares
New Delhi, July 28: The total area sown under kharif crops in the ongoing current season has increased by 4 per cent to 829.64 lakh hectares, so far this year, compared with the corresponding figure of 797.91 lakh hectares in the same period last year, data released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare on Monday showed. The increase in sown area augurs well for higher production, which, in turn, would increase the incomes of farmers and also help to keep food inflation in check. The official figures show that the area under rice is 245.33 lakh hectares as on July 27 this year, compared to 236.16 lakh hectares during the same period last year. The area under pulses such as urad and moong has been reported at 93.05 lakh hectares as compared to 89.94 lakh hectares during the same period last year. This increase is a positive development as an increase in the production of pulses plays a key role in controlling inflation. The area covered under coarse cereals or millets such as jowar, bajra, and ragi has shot up to 160.72 lakh hectares during the current season so far, from 154.97 lakh hectares in the same period of the previous year. The sown area has gone up in the current season as better monsoon rains have facilitated the sowing in unirrigated areas of the country, which account for close to 50 per cent of the country's farmland. The area under sugarcane has also increased to 55.16 lakh hectares from 54.88 lakh hectares in the same period of the previous year. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on May 28 this year, approved an increase in the Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for 14 kharif crops for the marketing season 2025-26 to ensure remunerative prices to the growers for their crops and incentivise production. The highest absolute increase in MSP over the previous year has been recommended for nigerseed (Rs 820 per quintal), followed by ragi (Rs 596 per quintal), cotton (Rs 589 per quintal), and sesamum (Rs 579 per quintal).

Kerala nuns' arrest triggers political slugfest; Chhattisgarh CM justifies action
KOCHI/NEW DELHI: The arrest of two Catholic nuns, hailing from Kerala, in the BJP-ruled Chhattisgarh on charges of human trafficking and forced religious conversion triggered a political slugfest on Monday with Congress and CPI (M) criticising their arrest and Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai accusing the parties of politicising the issue. Defending the arrest, Sai also said he was concerned about the safety of "our daughters of Bastar." Amid mounting protests in Kerala by both the ruling CPI(M)-led LDF and the opposition Congress-led UDF over the arrest of the nuns, Rahul Gandhi alleged that they were jailed in Chhattisgarh because of their faith and claimed that a "systematic persecution" of minorities was taking place wherever the BJP was in power. Noting that religious freedom is a constitutional right, Gandhi demanded the immediate release of the nuns and accountability for the injustice committed against them. "Two Catholic nuns jailed in Chhattisgarh after being targeted for their faith - this isn't justice, it's BJP-RSS mob rule. It reflects a dangerous pattern: systematic persecution of minorities under this regime," Gandhi said in a post on X. "UDF MPs protested in Parliament today. We will not be silent. Religious freedom is a constitutional right. We demand their immediate release and accountability for this injustice," the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha also said. Nuns Preethi Merry and Vandana Francis, as well as a third person identified as Sukaman Mandavi, were arrested from Durg railway station on July 25 following a complaint from a local Bajrang Dal functionary, who accused them of forcibly converting three girls from Narayanpur and trafficking them, a railway police official had said on Sunday.

Congress speaking the language of Pakistan: BJP on Chidambaram's remarks
The BJP on Monday (July 28, 2025) accused the Congress, including its senior leader P. Chidambaram, of 'speaking the language' of Pakistan on the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor. Speaking to the media inside the Parliament complex, Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan asked why Mr. Chidambaram was asking for proof of Pakistan's involvement in the terror attack. 'They had sought a discussion on Operation Sindoor. When the government is ready for discussion, why are they running away from it?' he said, alleging that the Congress and Mr. Chidambaram were speaking the language of Pakistan. Follow Parliament Monsoon session LIVE Day 6 updates here Earlier, former Union Minister and BJP leader Anurag Thakur said: 'Whenever the topic of Pakistan and terrorism comes up, Pakistan itself doesn't defend Pakistan as much as 'Rahul occupied Congress' does. Today, when the discussion on the Pahalgam terrorist attack is to take place in Parliament, the statement in favour of Pakistan by senior Congress leader and former Home Minister Chidambaramji reflects Congress's pro-Pakistan mentality.' Responding to the charge via a post on X, Mr. Chidambaram said: 'Trolls are of different kinds and use different tools to spread misinformation. The worst kind is a troll who suppresses the full recorded interview, takes two sentences, mutes some words, and paints the speaker in a black colour!' In an interview with a media platform, Mr. Chidambaram had said: '...they are unwilling to disclose what the NIA [National Investigation Agency] has done all these weeks. Have they identified the terrorists?...where they came from? For all we know, they could be homegrown terrorists. Why do you assume that they came from Pakistan? There is no evidence of that.'
