Paul Finebaum Names Major College Football QB He's Not Confident In
The 2025 college football season is just under two months away. While teams still have plenty of time to address any challenges before the season begins, major analysts have already started making predictions.

One such analyst is ESPN's Paul Finebaum, often referred to as the "Mouth of the South." Finebaum is known for his candid critiques of prominent players, programs, and coaches in the sport.
During an episode of "The Paul Finebaum Show," he shared his thoughts on the Georgia Bulldogs, who finished the previous season with an 11-3 record, won the SEC Championship, but were eliminated in the first round of the College Football Playoff. Finebaum mentioned that he has one significant concern about the Bulldogs as they approach the upcoming season.

"I'm not confident in Gunner Stockton," Finebaum said. "I sat with Kirby a couple of weeks ago, and he acted like he was, but I like to give him a lie detector test. Carson Beck had his faults, but I'd much rather have him than Gunner Stockton."

Stockton enters the 2025 season with limited playing time, having appeared in only five games last season. In those games, he passed for a total of 440 yards and one touchdown, with most of his action occurring during the final game and a half of the season after Beck suffered a season-ending injury.
He played a pivotal role in leading the Bulldogs to an overtime victory against the Texas Longhorns in the SEC Championship Game after taking over for Beck, who was injured in the first half.
The Bulldogs won the game 22-19, thanks to Stockton's courageous eight-yard run on second and eight at the 12-yard line in overtime. On the following play, Trevor Etienne rushed in for the winning touchdown from four yards out.
However, the playoffs did not go as well against Notre Dame, as Georgia lost 23-10 and struggled offensively for most of the game. Stockton completed 20-of-32 passes for 234 yards and one touchdown.

A key moment came when he fumbled the ball with 33 seconds left in the first half. He was sacked for a loss of 12 yards, and Notre Dame recovered the fumble. At that moment, the Bulldogs were trailing 6-3. The Fighting Irish then scored just one play later and returned the second-half kickoff for a touchdown, extending their lead to 20-3.
Beck decided to transfer to the Miami Hurricanes after the season, which has now left Stockton determined to prove the doubters wrong, including Finebaum, and lead Georgia to another national championship.

New nickname, mascot announced for Youngstown schools
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — The Youngstown City School District has just announced its new nickname and mascot. Starting in the 2026-27 school year, East and Chaney high schools will merge, along with their middle schools. They'd previously called on the community to help decide the nickname for the new schools and select a mascot — and the results are in. The combined schools will be known as the 'Defenders,' represented by a fierce owl with the outline of the city of Youngstown between its plumicorns, pictured below. 'The Defenders mascot goes beyond a name; it is a powerful symbol of strength, who we are, and who we are becoming,' said YCSD Superintendent Jeremy Batchelor. 'We are grateful for our scholars, staff, alumni, and community support, and look forward to what lies ahead for the future of Youngstown City School District.' Based on feedback from the community and further conversation with the Youngstown Board of Education, the new school names have now transitioned from Youngstown Unified to Youngstown High School and Youngstown Middle School, according to a release from the school. First News sat down with Superintendent Jeremy Batchelor to talk all the newest rebranding. Check back here for updates. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Cowboys need dramatic improvement as top NFL offenses prove run-pass balance matters
The running game is back in the NFL! Not only were the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles second in rushing yards last season, but eight of the top 11 rushing teams qualified for the playoffs. It appears teams that ran the ball well had an inside track on the postseason. So, the Dallas Cowboys just need to run the ball more in 2025 to increase their playoff odds, right? Not so fast. Running the ball for the sake of running ball does little good for a team's playoff hopes. In fact, an inefficient ground game comes at the opportunity cost of a more efficient passing game. Stubborn play calling would then actually hurt a team's playoff chances. Advertisement Rushing the ball is a tried-and-true pathway to success, provided it's efficient enough to warrant its heavy usage. Additionally, 'heavy usage' doesn't mean it's now more predominant than the passing game or even balanced with the passing game. It just means it's carved out a bigger role than what has been typical in recent years. Based on nfelo numbers for 2024, the Eagles had the highest pass rate in the NFL. Given their success on the ground, it's hard to fault them for it. Philadelphia averaged +0.056 EPA rushing compared to +0.165 EPA passing. Passing was still more efficient, but the margin was narrower than most teams. Since situations typically dictate run-pass play calling on third downs, RBSDM calculates early-down balance separately. On early downs the Packers and Eagles led the NFL in rushing rate (57.3 and 53.7 respectively). As one may surmise, both teams were extremely successful rushing it on early downs, thus justifying its abnormal usage. Advertisement The next three teams on the list are evidence that it's an efficient rushing attack that leads to success instead of simply rushing for the sake of rushing. Tennessee, Indianapolis and Pittsburgh finished third, fourth and fifth in early down rushing rate. They didn't rush because they were good at it but rather, they rushed because their quarterback play was abysmal, offering negative EPA output through the air. This is a situation a healthy Dak Prescott-led offense has never had since the Cowboys' passing game has always ranked among league leaders in EPA efficiency. Takeaways for the Cowboys The Cowboys should absolutely run the ball more often in 2025. Such a shift in run-pass balance would take pressure off their young offensive line and limit injury exposure to an aging QB. But the frequency of running plays needs directly correspond to the success it achieves in efficiency. At -0.128 EPA Dallas had the seventh worst rushing EPA in the NFL last season so they would have to drastically improve to justify a heavier usage in 2025. Which they intend to do. New York Knicks hire Mike Brown, a two-time NBA Coach of the Year
FILE - Sacramento Kings head coach Mike Brown is pictured in the first half of an NBA preseason basketball game against the Utah Jazz, Oct. 15, 2024, in Salt Lake City. (AP Photo/Spenser Heaps, File) NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Knicks hired Mike Brown on Monday, turning to the two-time NBA Coach of the Year after firing Tom Thibodeau. The Knicks offered the job to Brown last week and announced Monday that he would be taking over the team that reached the Eastern Conference finals last season for the first time in 25 years. Advertisement They decided to fire Thibodeau despite that and eventually picked Brown, who wasn't out of work long after getting fired by the Sacramento Kings during last season. Brown had led the Kings to the postseason in 2023 — their first appearance since 2006 — and was voted the Coach of the Year. He also won the award in Cleveland, where he led the Cavaliers to the 2007 NBA Finals. ___ AP NBA:
