The Southern Railway has launched a study to check the feasibility of operating train service between Tindivanam and Cuddalore via Puducherry.
The intent of the railways to construct a new rail line connecting Tindivanam, Cuddalore and Puducherry was made clear at a meeting of Southern Railway officials with Members of Parliament on Wednesday in Tiruchi.
To a written request made by Puducherry MP V. Vaithilingam on laying a rail line between Tindivanam and Cuddalore via Puducherry, the Southern Railway has stated that a feasibility study and final location survey for the project was currently under way. 'The feasibility study/final location survey is in progress for a new line from Tindivanam to Cuddalore via Puducherry. On completion of the survey, a detailed project report will be submitted to the Railway Board for further sanction,' the Southern Railway said in its written reply.
The Railways also informed the MP about its plan to construct a new station for Puducherry as part of laying the rail line between Tindivanam and Cuddalore. The new Railway Station in Puducherry when constructed will have facilities for maintenance of trains. To another request made by the MP, the Southern Railway agreed to consider extending Madurai-Punalur Express to Karaikal and extension of Yashwanthpur Express to Bikaner via Hubli, Solapur, Surat, Ahmedabad and Jodhpur.

1 railway staffer killed, another seriously injured as Maoists carry out twin IED blasts on tracks in Jharkhand

A railway employee was killed and another seriously injured in an IED blast carried out allegedly by Maoists when a team was inspecting a site where an explosion had occurred earlier in Jharkhand's West Singhbhum district early Sunday morning, an RPF official said. Confirming the incident, a railway official in Chakradharpur said the incident was part of a two-stage attack carried out by Maoists during the 'Shaheed Saptah' (Martyrs' Week), which was held from July 28 to August 3. 'The first IED explosion occurred early on Sunday, damaging a portion of the track. A second IED, likely planted nearby, exploded around 9.30 am as a patrol team was inspecting the affected section,' said a senior RPF official. The second blast took place between Karamapada and Rejda railway siding, under the Chakradharpur railway division, severely injuring two railway employees. 'Itwa Oraon, a keyman with the Railways, suffered critical leg injuries and was rushed to a hospital. He was declared dead on arrival. His colleague, Budhram Munda, sustained serious injuries and is undergoing treatment,' he said. The twin blasts forced authorities to suspend movement on the section of the tracks. An official said that train movement is expected to resume only after a full security clearance. The CPI (Maoist) has also called for a bandh (shutdown) on August 3 across six states, including Jharkhand, in remembrance of their fallen cadres. The district administration had issued alerts prior to the bandh, and security has been tightened in the region. An official said that additional forces from the CRPF and district police have been deployed as combing operations are underway. 50K houses to be allotted for Delhi's slum dwellers: CM Gupta

NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday announced a decision concerning the slum clusters of the capital, directing the Railways, Delhi Development Authority (DDA), and all government departments to ensure that no slum in the city is demolished. In cases where removal becomes unavoidable due to development projects or other reasons, alternative housing must be provided in advance. The CM further stated that approximately 50,000 houses constructed years ago in the outer areas of the city will be renovated and allocated to slum dwellers. She said that the flats will be allotted under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban (PMAY-U). She pointed out that under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), Delhi government agencies such as DUSIB and DSIIDC were allocated substantial funds. However, due to the inaction of previous government, approximately Rs 732 crore was left unused. She added that the Centre has approved the utilisation of these funds for the renovation of the dilapidated flats. The CM also stated that if required, the government will amend the existing policy on slum clusters and will even approach the court to protect their housing rights. Gupta said that the slums are an inseparable part of the capital, with residents who have been living there for decades. She criticised the opposition for using slum dwellers as a political vote bank, asserting that her government is making efforts to ensure their rightful recognition as residents of Delhi.
