Ringgit rises against US$ as markets digest Fed's tariff caution

The Star6 hours ago

KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit extended its gains against the US dollar on Thursday, buoyed by comments from US Federal Reserve (Fed) chair Jerome Powell highlighting uncertainty over the inflationary impact of tariffs.
At 8 am, the local note strengthened to 4.2255/2475 against the greenback from Wednesday's close of 4.2335/2405.
Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the prospect of a US rate cut remains intact, as downside risks to growth continue to mount amid weak sentiment among consumers and businesses.
"On that note, markets are still leaning towards the Fed increasing policy accommodation in the second half of the year, with two rate cuts now appearing to be the base case,' he told Bernama.
Mohd Afzanizam also noted that the US Dollar Index (DXY) fell 0.18 per cent to 97.679 points, suggesting the dollar-ringgit exchange rate is likely to hover between 4.22 and 4.23 today.
However, the ringgit opened lower against a basket of major currencies.
It weakened against the Japanese yen to 2.9161/9315 from 2.9070/9120, fell versus the British pound to 5.7843/8144 from 5.7631/7726, and declined against the euro to 4.9367/9624 from 4.9113/9194.
The ringgit was mixed against ASEAN currencies.
It advanced vis-à-vis the Philippine peso to 7.45/7.49 from 7.46/7.48, and was little changed against the Indonesian rupiah at 259.2/260.6 from 259.7/260.2.
Meanwhile, it slipped against the Singapore dollar to 3.3092/3269 from 3.3061/3121, and eased against the Thai baht to 12.9899/13.0648 from 12.9584/9858. - Bernama

China stocks retreat 7-month high following Mideast calm

HONG KONG: China and Hong Kong shares weakened on Thursday after hitting multi-month peaks, as a relief rally over the ceasefire in the Middle East took a breather. At market close, the Shanghai Composite index declined 0.2 per cent after briefly touching the highest level since December during earlier trades. China's blue-chip CSI300 index lost 0.4 per cent. The brokers sector lost 1.7 per cent to give up some of the gains seen on Wednesday and the rare earth sector declined 1.2 per cent. Offsetting the onshore losses, the CSI Defence Index gained 0.4 per cent while banking shares advanced 1 per cent. In Hong Kong, the benchmark Hang Seng Index snapped a four-day winning streak and weakened 0.6 per cent, pulling back from a three-month high hit at the previous close. While markets have been soothed by a ceasefire between Israel and Iran, traders were on edge about Trump's July 9 deadline on imposing tariffs on trading partners and his pressure on the Fed. China markets are expected to face some volatility pressure between July and August following the recent gains, and investors are advised to remain cautious in the short term, analysts at Morgan Stanley said in a note. Analysts at Goldman Sachs said in a note on Thursday that they have observed strength across China assets from the trading desks with long-only funds and hedge funds both getting more active. Clients' feedback now expect more retail participation following the recent rally. Still, the upcoming earnings season and corporate guidance for the second half will be the key focus as there's limited visibility on macro support, they added.

Asian FX firm on softer dollar; regional, trade headwinds back in focus

SINGAPORE/HONG KONG: Asian currencies advanced on Thursday as the dollar weakened amid worries over the US Federal Reserve's independence, while investors turned their attention from easing Middle East tensions to regional and trade risks. Stocks in the region traded mixed, with South Korean shares sliding more than 2 per cent as investors locked in profits following a strong post-election rally. On the other end, equities in Thailand were up 0.4 per cent, while those in Malaysia advanced by 0.3 per cent. Investors are now shifting their focus from geopolitical risks in the Middle East, which kept markets on edge much of this week and last, to rising trade tensions as the July 9 deadline for the 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs approaches. The key downside risk lies in the short timeframe before reciprocal tariff suspensions expire, with uncertainty over their extension, which could introduce volatility and reverse current sentiment quickly, RHB analysts wrote. Globally, concerns over the Federal Reserve's independence dented confidence in US monetary policy and sent the US dollar lower, after a media report said President Donald Trump had considered replacing Fed Chair Jerome Powell by September or October. The weakness in the dollar gave Asian currencies a lift, with the Thai baht inching up 0.5 per cent, a day after the Bank of Thailand (BoT) kept its interest rates unchanged. Alan Lau, an FX strategist at Maybank, said the BoT's dovish tone and a softer dollar are keeping rate cut hopes alive, supporting Thai bonds and paving the way for baht strength through the year. Thailand, already grappling with weak consumption, mounting household debt and a tourism slowdown, now also faces escalating political uncertainty and the risk of steep US tariffs on its exports if a deal is not struck before a July deadline. Most central banks in the region have taken a wait-and-see approach during their recent meetings, quoting the fundamentals of their respective economies and taking stock of uncertainty in global trade and geopolitics. Taiwan's central bank recently held its interest rates steady, citing solid growth in its tech-driven economy and muted inflation, while its Indonesian counterpart said it would intervene when required. The Taiwanese dollar rose 0.9 per cent to reach its highest level in over 3 years, while the Indonesian rupiah added 0.5 per cent. Meanwhile, the Philippines central bank left the door open for at least one more cut this year following a recent 25-basis-point rate cut. In Hong Kong, the local dollar held steady after the de facto central bank sold US$1.2 billion to defend the local currency peg, which keeps the Hong Kong dollar trading within a 7.75-7.85 range against the US dollar. Stocks were down 0.7 per cent.
