Top 2027 running back target Amir Brown remains very high on Notre Dame

USA Today2 days ago
Much has been made of Notre Dame's exceptional 2026 recruiting class, and Marcus Freeman and his staff have already been busy stocking talent for 2027 as well.
North Carolina's Amir Brown is a four-star running back from Rolesville (Raleigh, NC) who already has an offer from the Fighting Irish. He has developed a strong relationship with Fighting Irish running backs coach Ja'Juan Seider, who has made quite the impact since his arrival in South Bend.
Brown has offers from several programs besides Notre Dame, including in-state North Carolina, Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State and Texas, among others. But the Irish are one of the top schools on his list after he had an enjoyable visit to South Bend in April.
The 5-foot-10, 200-pounder has plans to return for Notre Dame's home opener against Texas A&M on September 13, and he's hoping to make it to a few other games at other schools as well. But the Irish have certainly made a strong impact thus far on the Rolesville star.
ND has had a run of recent success in North Carolina, getting talent such as Bryce Young, Rodney Dunham, Ebenezer Ewetade and Nick Reddish in the past few classes. Getting Brown would be another coup.

Ohio State football duo named to the 2025 Thorpe preseason watch list

We've got a couple of more Ohio State football players that landed on a preseason watch list on Wednesday, and this time it's the Jim Thorpe Award. The Thorpe Award was first handed out in 1986 and is one of the most prestigious awards in college football. It goes to the best defensive back in college football annually and is voted on by the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame. The Buckeyes have only had two players take home the Thorpe Award, and it's been a while. Antoine Winfield won the award in 1998, with Malcom Jenkins taking it home a decade later in 2008. You have to like Ohio State's chances in 2025 because one of the players appearing on the preseason watch list is safety Caleb Downs. His accolades speak for themself, but he's widely known as the best defender and defensive back heading into the country. The other Buckeye appearing on the list of 35 names is cornerback Davison Igbinosun. The 6-foot-2-inch. long and rangy corner will be entering his senior season in Columbus after transferring from Ole Miss after his sophomore season. He's played in all 29 games since coming to the banks of the Olentangy and led the team with 11 passes defended (9 pass breakups and two interceptions). After being narrowed down to three finalists, the Thorpe Award will be announced on December 12 during the Home Depot College Football Awards show. Cardinals S Budda Baker may morph Will Johnson into a NFL ballhawk

Budda Baker's leadership could be vital for Will Johnson in rookie year. Arizona Cardinals rookie Will Johnson would be wise to take council from two-time All-Pro safety Budda Baker in training camp this summer. Last season, Baker was everywhere, every play, and in every game on defense, finishing 2024 with 164 total tackles, including 95 solo tackles. Will Baker's success motivate Johnson to excel in his rookie season? Baker may look to motivate Johnson in the weight room and in practice drills this summer. Specifically, Johnson will need to learn NFL tackling techniques expeditiously given the circumstances. The game will be faster, more intense, and Johnson needs to be guided while he processes the pre-snap disguises that offensive coordinators at the NFL level will look to beguile him with. With the recent injury to Starling Thomas, Johnson could be sequenced in as the No. 3 (or 2) option on the team's depth chart behind defensive back Garrett Williams. Still, Johnson is no stranger to big moments and produced nine career collegiate interceptions in 32 games for Michigan. Defensive coordinator Nick Rallis will be looking to improve the team's pass rush, and if successful, quarterback pressures may increase errant throws, allowing for Johnson to play as a ballhawk. For Johnson, he couldn't ask for a better mentor than Baker in just his rookie season in the NFL. Pair of Ohio State football players named to the 2025 Butkus Award preseason watch list

The 2025 Butkus Award preseason watch list was unveiled on Wednesday, and there were two more Ohio State football players appearing on the list. The Butkus has been around since 1985 and is given to the best linebacker in college football on a yearly basis. It is, of course, named after the late, great Pro Football and College Football Hall of Fame linebacker, Dick Butkus. The two OSU players appearing among the 50 names announced are Sonny Styles and Arvell Reese. Styles is entering his final year as a Buckeye after already making a name for himself in 2024. He was second on the team with 100 tackles and really flashed at the end of the season through to the College Football Playoff championship run. Reese could be poised for a huge breakout this year. He received high praise from the coaching staff last year before the season and showed flashes of what he could do, and now he figures to be a starter at linebacker and make good on all that athleticism and promise. Two all-time great linebackers in Ohio State history have won the Butkus. Andy Katzenmoyer was the first Buckeye to take the award home in 1997, and that was followed up by current Ohio State linebackers coach James Laurinaitis in 2007. The Butkus Award winner will be announced on December 10 after the semifinalists are announced on November 4, and the finalists are unveiled on November 25.
