To keep ticket costs within reach on flights between Mumbai and Solapur, Maharashtra govt to make available Rs 3,240 per seat

Time of India4 days ago
Mumbai: The state cabinet on Tuesday approved the provision of viability gap funding (VGF) per seat for a year on the lines of the
UDAN scheme
for the Solapur-Pune-Mumbai air route.
The Centre launched the UDAN (Regional Connectivity Scheme) to make air travel affordable for common people.
This scheme will also be implemented for Solapur airport. Until the implementation of this scheme, funds will be made available as viability gap at the rate of Rs 3,240 per seat (100% VGF) for a year.
This will help reduce the cost of air travel on the Solapur-Pune-Mumbai route, said officials.

As per this decision, the VGF per seat will be provided to Star Air Company for the Solapur-Mumbai and Solapur-Pune routes. A provision of Rs 17.97 crore will be made for this.
After the implementation of the UDAN scheme for this airport, this fund provided by the govt will be discontinued, and 20% VGF will be provided as per the central govt's UDAN scheme.
In areas that previously had few or no flights for connectivity, the govt is attempting to increase regional air travel, enhance connectivity, and foster economic growth with this strategy. The scheme contributed significantly to the growth of regional airlines.
Not only this, but this initiative also gave a boost to job creation and tourism.
Since its launch on Oct 21, 2016, UDAN effectively ran flights on about 601 itineraries and 71 airports, increasing the affordability and accessibility of air travel for the typical Indian tourist. Connecting smaller towns and cities with larger hubs is the main objective of this plan, which also aims to make air travel more accessible to people living in remote places.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi To Visit India On Monday

Chinese Foreign Affairs Minister Wang Yi is set to visit India on August 18 (Monday) for the 24th Round of Talks Between the Special Representatives of China and India on the Boundary Question, Beijing confirmed on Saturday. "From August 18 to 20, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, Minister of Foreign Affairs and China's Special Representative on the China-India boundary question Wang Yi will visit India and hold the 24th Round of Talks Between the Special Representatives of China and India on the Boundary Question at the invitation of the Indian side," the Chinese Ministry for Foreign Affairs said in a statement. The visit is scheduled to take place shortly before Prime Minister Narendra Modi travels to China to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit scheduled to take place at Tianjin, from August 31 to September 1. The Chinese side also welcomed PM Modi's participation in the SCO Summit. At a briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said, "China welcomes Prime Minister Modi to China for the SCO Tianjin Summit. We believe that with the concerted effort of all parties, the Tianjin summit will be a gathering of solidarity, friendship and fruitful results, and the SCO will enter a new stage of high-quality development featuring greater solidarity, coordination, dynamism and productiveness." According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, leaders of over 20 countries, including all member states of the SCO and heads of 10 international organisations, will attend relevant events of the summit, which, Jiakun said, will be the "largest summit in scale since the establishment of the SCO." This will be PM Modi's first visit to China since the Galwan clash in 2020, which severely strained bilateral ties. The breakthrough in bilateral talks, first after the Galwan Valley face-off between the soldiers of the two countries at the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in June 2020, was made possible after India and China reached an agreement on patrolling along the nearly 3500-km LAC to end the four-year-long border confrontation. In July, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar visited China to attend the Meeting of the Council of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs in Tianjin. He also held discussions with his Chinese counterpart on the sidelines of the meeting. He also called on Chinese President Xi Jinping, along with his fellow SCO Foreign Ministers. Earlier in June, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh visited China to attend the SCO Defence Ministers Meeting. India had refused to endorse the joint declaration at the SCO Defence Ministers' meeting, citing the exclusion of concerns around terrorism as a key reason. India stated that it wanted concerns about terrorism reflected in the document, which was not acceptable to one particular country; therefore, the statement was not adopted. During his visit, Singh met his Chinese counterpart, Admiral Don Jun, and the two leaders had a "constructive and forward-looking exchange of views" on issues related to bilateral ties. In June, National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval also visited China to attend the 20th Meeting of the SCO Security Council Secretaries. In his intervention at the meeting, he highlighted the need to shun double standards in the fight against terrorism and take decisive actions against UN-proscribed terrorists and entities like LeT, JeM and their proxies and dismantle their terror eco-systems.

Finally, woke up to need for radical transformation: Cong on Modi govt's GST reforms push

New Delhi: Congress party on Saturday welcomed the proposed reforms in the Goods and Services (GST) tax, however, with a pointed swipe at the Centre, claiming that it kept dragging its feet on the crucial issue for seven long years. In his Independence Day speech, Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised a Diwali gift for the citizens of the country as he announced that the next generation GST reforms would be rolled out before the festival of lights. Reacting to PM Modi's announcement, Jairam Ramesh said that the Congress party has been pressing for "sweeping reforms" in the GST, but the Centre kept dithering over the issue. He also said that reforming the GST was one of its key promises in the 2024 election manifesto. Taking to X, Jairam Ramesh wrote, "Over the last seven years, the spirit of GST has been vitiated by increased number of rates and the granting of multiple exemptions. The structure also seems to have facilitated evasion." "Yesterday, Prime Minister seems to have finally woken up to the fact that economic growth will simply not accelerate unless this transformation takes place and increases private consumption and private investment,' he added. He further said that the Congress demands an official discussion paper on GST 2.0 very soon so that there can be an informed and wider debate on this vital and pressing national issue. "GST 2.0 should be truly a Good and Simple Tax (GST) in letter, spirit, and compliance, not like the Growth Suppressing Tax (GST) it has become," he said. He further called for a drastic reduction in the number of rates, stating that its simplification is essential but must be done in a manner that minimises revenue uncertainty to states and also eliminates the classification disputes that have become so common. "The GST compensation cess expires on March 31, 2006. This must be extended to offset any revenue uncertainty from the rationalisation of the rate structure," he added. He further suggested, "The widespread concerns of MSMEs, the major employment generators in the economy, must be addressed meaningfully. Apart from major procedural changes, this will involve further increasing the thresholds that must apply to interstate supplies as well. Sectoral issues that have surfaced, for instance, in textiles, tourism, exporters, handicrafts and agricultural inputs must be tackled.'
