Shenandoah man headed to court on multiple charges

Yahoo21-02-2025
All charges were held for court for a Shenandoah man accused of driving a stolen car filled with drugs earlier this month.
Michael Rush, 38, of Shenandoah, waived his right to a preliminary hearing which had been scheduled for Thursday morning in Magisterial District Judge Anthony Kilker's office.
The case will proceed to the Schuylkill County Court of Common Pleas.
Rush remains in prison even after Kilker reduced his bail to 10% of $10,000.
On Feb. 9, Magisterial District Judge Edward Tarantelli, Frackville, arraigned Rush on $100,000 straight cash bail.
He is charged with felony receiving stolen property and misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance and DUI-Unsafe driving; and numerous summary offenses, according to reports.
On Feb. 9, Rush was driving a car west on Centre Street in the borough when an officer saw him veer out of his lane of traffic, police said. The officer pulled him over near the Blaschak Coal Company, according to reports.
Rush, who was reported to have glassy, bloodshot eyes and incoherent speech, told police he didn't have a valid license. Upon investigation, police determined Rush's license was suspended for DUI-related infractions.
The officer detected the smell of marijuana, and when questioned, Rush admitted he had used marijuana that day, according to reports. A green leafy substance, which he said belonged to him, was visible inside the vehicle, according to police.
Rush refused police requests for a vehicle search. He was unable to provide information on the vehicle, which police said was reported stolen.
After a field sobriety test, police arrested Rush on suspicion of of DUI.

An onlooker attempted to disrupt the detainment of Leidy Tatiana Mafla-Martinez by towing a police vehicle Colombian TikTok influencer Leidy Tatiana Mafla-Martinez was taken into ICE custody while live streaming from her home in Los Angeles. Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said Martinez was arrested in connection with a prior DUI. Newsweek reported Martinez, who is well-known on TikTok for posting videos that document several ICE arrests, was filmed on Friday seated in her Tesla when agents opened her car door and pulled her onto the pavement. She also appeared to experience a medical event during the arrest, and at one point onlookers are heard demanding treatment for her. 'He mocked and videotaped ICE officers chasing after him,' McLaughlin also told Newsweek. 'Secretary Noem has been clear: Anyone who seeks to impede law enforcement will be found and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.' Martinez was initially transported to White Memorial Hospital and is currently being held in a detention center in downtown Los Angeles. On Thursday, Los Angeles Rep. Jimmy Gomez accused ICE of staging an empty migrant detention center. 'One person was talking to the Mexican consulate who happened to be there, and the other person was just in the cell with their head down on a table or on the table or something. He was just kind of sitting there,' Gomez said of the center he visited recently. Gomez also questioned why the center was so empty despite the numerous arrests made recently. Nearly 2,800 people have been taken into ICE custody since early June. 'They've been running raids, even over the weekend, and all of a sudden there's no one there? That's just completely bizarre,' he told MSNBC's Jen Psaki. The post ICE Arrests TikTok Influencer Who Documented Immigration Raids at Her Home on Livestream appeared first on TheWrap.

Staying alive during the 100 deadliest days, what the state wants for you

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — State law enforcement is preparing for the end of the 100 Deadliest Days by focusing on stopping drug and alcohol related deaths on Utah roads. The Utah Highway Patrol is making their final push to urge drivers to find a sober ride. Over 250 extra DUI enforcement shifts will be worked statewide until Labor Day. To make it happen, nearly 50 different Utah law enforcement agencies are chipping in to make it happen. 'We don't want to go out there and particularly make more DUI arrests. We want people on the front end to make better choices that way. Law enforcement doesn't have to go out there and make these DUI arrests,' said Lt. Cameron Roden with the Utah Highway Patrol. Police team up every year nationally for the 'Drive Sober Or Get Pulled Over' campaign to stop drinking and driving. 'Here in Utah, we want people to lean on their networks and their loved ones. If you're out drinking, whether that be at a bar or a friend's house or wherever it may be,' said Jason Mettmann, Highway Safety Office Communications Manager. The campaign aims to raise awareness ahead of the Labor Day holiday and inform the public that extra DUI enforcement will be happening statewide. Last year, 136 individuals died on Utah roads due to a driver impaired by drugs and/or alcohol. Alcohol-related crashes in Utah are 15 times more likely to be fatal compared to other crashes. Preliminary data from 2025 shows 26 of the 149 fatalities were related to drug or alcohol use. 'That's a lot of individuals that are affected by these types of crashes. So it's something that we want to get these messages out there heading into the fall and winter months,' Lt. Roden said.
