Car crashes into Ferndale on Republic hole

The Citizen11-07-2025
A brand new Omoda car slipped into an unfilled open hole on Republic Road, outside the entrance to Ferndale on Republic on the afternoon of July 11.
Driver and owner, Lesego Ledwaba at the time explained that she was turning into the shopping centre and saw a pedestrian on the road. 'When I tried to avoid the pedestrian crossing, I swerved into the open pit. I also lightly bumped the pedestrian.' She confirmed that everyone in the car was fine.
The accident happened a few hours after she fetched the car from the garage.

The car went into the hole, leaving the front nose slightly tilted to the left, while the other dangled in the air. She explained that the car is fine, it is just the side that went into the pit that is damaged. 'I don't know what will happen next. I will wait for the repairs to occur, and we will see.'
The hole was left by Johannesburg Water after fixing a water leak in July 2024, a full year ago. It still remains unclear when it will be backfilled, as it is 10 days away from its first anniversary. The lane that turns into the shopping centre is severely affected by the excavation, which also leads to traffic congestion and delays.
Ward 102 councillor Lucinda Harman said that this is unbelievable in so many ways, and it's a miracle that it hasn't happened a lot sooner.
'In 10 days time, it's a year since that hole was opened. It is destroying businesses, residents' lives, and causing traffic jams. Shops have lost business for almost a year. All entities involved have failed dismally and should hang their heads in shame. To leave this mess, not fixing stormwater and backfill, is just unacceptable.'

She added that it was an accident waiting to happen, and it's never good if anyone gets hurt.
'This poor woman must be traumatised; it is a new car and that is terrible. If we lived in a place where the infrastructure was looked after, we wouldn't be sitting where we are right now but because there's such negligence in the city especially with such an appalling lack of work ethic, pride and people not doing their job, we end up in a situation like this.'

Fuel forecast brings both relief and pressure for Pretoria drivers

Fuel forecast brings both relief and pressure for Pretoria drivers Pretoria motorists are in for a mixed fuel price adjustment next week, with the latest month-end data from the Central Energy Fund pointing to both relief and strain at the pumps. While a decrease in one fuel type may offer some breathing room, a notable hike in another is set to hit drivers' pockets. The official fuel price changes will be confirmed in the coming days. The official price adjustments will be announced before the prices take effect next week; the recovery balances for the month are unlikely to change drastically. These are the recoveries at the end of July: Petrol 93: decrease of 35 cents per litre Petrol 95: decrease of 30 cents per litre Diesel 0.05% (wholesale): increase of 65 cents per litre Diesel 0.005% (wholesale): increase of 63 cents per litre Illuminating paraffin: increase of 29 cents per litre It should be emphasised that the final adjustments in fuel prices will only be announced later this week or early next week. Hilux named world's best-selling bakkie, SA among top markets

Having taken first place with the previous-generation RAV4 as the world's best-selling vehicle of 2024, Toyota has also ranked top as the best-selling bakkie manufacturer over the past 12 months. Global top 10 The Citizen reports that, according to a six-month market study by renowned automotive analyst Felipe Munoz, the Hilux ranked above the Ford F-150 as the world's best-seller with sales of 618 200 versus 594 100. Admittedly sold in more markets compared to the F-150's North American focus, the Hilux finished as one of three Toyota products within the global top 10. Its US counterpart, the Tacoma, placed eighth with 215 600 units sold, while the full-size Tundra ranked ninth on 179 400. The Blue Oval also secured three places within the top 10, with the Ranger in fourth (386 900) and the F-250 10th (167 300). General Motors filled the third and sixth spots with the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 (418 300) and its upscale twin, the GMC Sierra 1500 (267 500), respectively. Stellantis followed in fifth with the Ram 1500 (282 300), and Isuzu took seventh with the D-Max (262 200). View this post on Instagram A post shared by Felipe Munoz | Automotive (@carindustryanalysis) South Africa ranked In a separate ranking of the biggest non-US market bakkies, South Africa featured in the top 10 for no fewer than six mainstream global models. These include the Hilux (4th), D-Max (4th), Ranger (5th), Nissan Navara (7th), Volkswagen Amarok (4th) and Peugeot Landtrek. Most likely a result of their local production — with Landtrek manufacturing set to start next year — the report excludes Chinese brands and the ageing Mahindra Pik Up, which is sold in fewer international markets. So far this year, South Africa's perennial top three — the Hilux, Ranger and D-Max — again feature among the 10 best-selling vehicles for the first half of 2025, with the Hilux remaining at number one overall, followed by the Ranger in second and the Isuzu fifth. Pothole debris lingers on 10th Road in Kew as new pothole appears

Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) completed repairs of a series of potholes along 10th Road in Kew on July 11, but residents say the job was left incomplete with heaps of repair debris still lining the road more than two weeks later. Now, to make matters worse, a new pothole has appeared in the exact same spot, less than a month since repairs were done, raising questions about the durability of the original repair. Local resident Thandi Nkosi said they have been waiting for the agency to return and clear the leftover gravel, tar chunks, and broken asphalt. The delay has caused, not only inconvenience, but also potential safety risks for pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles navigating the street. 'We appreciate the initial repairs, but the debris is becoming dangerous. It looks like the job was only half-done. The road is messy, and the new pothole shows that the fix didn't last long. If you swerve to avoid it, you're in the oncoming lane. Also read: Johannesburg executive mayor declares war on potholes 'If a repaired road develops a new pothole in less than three weeks, something's been done wrong. Does JRA even inspect these repairs afterward? Who's held accountable when problems reappear this quickly?' Sandton Chronicle reached out to JRA for a comment, and updates will be provided once they become available.
