Moon Tae-il to attend first hearing over 'quasi-rape' case

Express Tribune19-04-2025

Former NCT member Moon Tae-il, known mononymously as Taeil, will face his first court hearing on May 12 along with two others charged with "quasi-rape", reported South Korean news outlet allkpop. South Korean laws describe "quasi-rape" as engaging in sexual intercourse while the other person is unconscious or unable to resist.
The Korea Times reported in March that Taeil was indicted without detention on charges of sexually assaulting an intoxicated woman with two acquaintances. The Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office's Women and Children's Crime Investigation Division 1 indicted all three individuals in February.
The court rejected the Seoul Bangbae Police Station's appeal for arrest warrants for Taeil and the other two suspects, revealing that they had admitted to the crime, which in turn reduced the need for detention. Two months after receiving the victim's reports, police then summoned the singer in August for questioning and forwarded the case to the prosecution in September.
Taeil, however, did not show before the prosecutors, with his legal team providing medical documents and a statement from his attorney to validate his leave. Meanwhile, all suspects maintained that the crime was not premeditated.
In August last year, the 30-year-old singer left his K-pop group following an unspecified sexual crime accusation, as per a statement released by SM Entertainment. The statement also assured the public that the singer was cooperating with the investigation.
"While assessing the facts related to this matter, we recognised the severity of the issue and determined that he can no longer continue team activities," it said. "After discussing with Taeil, it's been decided that he will withdraw from the team We deeply apologise for the controversy caused by our artist."
While SM Entertainment had announced Taeil's departure back then, his contract was formally terminated in October. "Taeil is now under investigation for a crime, which is cause for contract termination because our trust in him as an artist has been severely damaged. The termination came as the result of a mutual agreement," the company said.
Taeil was a member of both the larger group and NCT's sub-unit NCT 127, which released its sixth studio album Walk in July. After suffering from a motorcycle accident in August 2023, he went on a hiatus to undergo surgery and focus on recovering, which limited his activities with the group.
The company notified, "As he still needs sufficient treatment and stability, Taeil will not be able to participate in NCT 127's third tour NEO CITY – THE UNITY scheduled for November. We ask for fans' generous understanding."

aespa's Karina comes under fire for controversial Instagram post amid Korean election season

Karina, member of K-pop girl group aespa, has faced public criticism after posting a photo during South Korea's sensitive election season. On May 27, she uploaded an image to Instagram featuring a black jacket with red detailing and the number 2, along with a red rose emoji. Though the photo was soon deleted, it sparked immediate backlash online. Photo: Instagram Social media users accused Karina of subtly endorsing a political candidate, with phrases such as 'No. 2 voter Karina' and 'conservative Karina' trending. In the current election,Kim Moon-soo, the candidate of the conservative People Power Party (PPP) uses red and holds ballot position number 2. During election periods, K-pop idols are urged to follow an unspoken 'no colour, no gesture' rule. This includes avoiding party colours—red, blue, yellow, and green—and refraining from hand gestures like the peace sign or thumbs-up, which may be construed as symbolic support. In response to the incident, SM Entertainment released a formal statement, denying any political intent and stating that the post was 'simply shared from daily life.' This is SM Entertainment. We apologize for causing concern due to our artist Karina's recent post. Karina simply shared something from her daily life on social media, with absolutely no other intention or purpose. Once she realized that the post could be misunderstood, she immediately deleted it. We sincerely apologize for any distress this may have caused unintentionally. Our agency will also be more careful and make greater efforts to prevent such incidents from happening in the future. We hope that our artist's intentions will no longer be misrepresented or consumed with a particular agenda, and we will do our utmost to protect Karina and all of our artists. Thank you. Karina also issued a personal apology via the fan platform Bubble, writing, 'I'm really sorry for making Mys worry… I'll also try to be more attentive and act more carefully.' Photo: X

Ye South Korea concert canceled amid controversies, streaming bans, and public backlash

Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, will no longer be performing in South Korea later this month. His concert at Incheon Munhak Main Stadium, originally scheduled for May 31, 2025, has been officially canceled. Ticketing platform Interpark Global announced the cancellation on its website, citing 'recent controversies' involving the artist. 'We regret to inform you that the 'YE LIVE IN KOREA' concert… has been canceled due to recent controversies involving the artist Kanye West (YE),' the statement reads. 'We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this may cause. All purchased tickets will be automatically canceled, and full refunds will be processed sequentially.' Reuters also confirmed the cancellation on May 19, noting the involvement of South Korean e-commerce company Coupang in the scrapped event. The decision follows a series of contentious incidents involving Ye in recent months. The rapper has come under fire for making anti-Semitic and anti-LGBTQ remarks across his social media platforms. Earlier this month, Ye claimed that his song 'Heil Hitler' was banned from all major streaming services. In a post on X, he criticized what he sees as inconsistency in censorship policies, writing: 'Heil Hitler by Ye has been banned by all digital streaming platforms… While Rednecks by Randy Newman remains streamable. They're literally keeping the n—-s down.' His most recent media appearance on Piers Morgan Uncensored ended abruptly after Ye walked off the set following a heated exchange. Before leaving, he defended his public persona and contributions to music and culture. As of now, Ye has not issued a public response to the concert cancellation. He was recently seen in Mallorca, Spain, alongside his wife Bianca Censori and social media figures Sneako and Digital Nas.

South Korea Jeju Air crash families file criminal complaint against minister, 14 others

SEOUL: Families of victims from the Jeju Air plane that crashed in December have filed a criminal complaint against 15 people including South Korean government officials and airline safety representatives, their lawyers said on Tuesday. Families of 72 of the victims from the Jeju Air crash on December 29 said they were initiating the legal action against officials including transport minister Park Sang-woo alleging negligence in managing safety risks as well as violations of the Aviation Safety Act. The crash at South Korea's Muan Airport killed 179 people, the deadliest air disaster on the country's soil. South Korea starts releasing Jeju Air crash victims to families The statement released by lawyers of the bereaved families said a more thorough investigation was needed on the decision to attempt a return to land immediately after a bird strike, on the maintenance of the aircraft's engine, and on whether the construction of a runway embankment was appropriate. The Jeju Air Boeing (BA.N) 737-800 overshot Muan Airport's runway as it made an emergency belly landing and crashed into an embankment containing navigation equipment known as localisers, killing all but two of the 181 passengers and crew members on board.
