Diogo Jota remembered by Liverpool in emotional tribute at season opener
Liverpool honoured Dioho Jota with a minute's silence before the kick-off against Bournemouth on Aug 15.
– Emotional Liverpool talisman Mohamed Salah buried his face in his hands as the Anfield crowd gave a heart-wrenching rendition of You'll Never Walk Alone in tribute to beloved forward Diogo Jota ahead of the English Premier League season-opener on Aug 15, which ended 4-2 to the Reds.
The reigning champions honoured the Portugal forward with a minute's silence before the
kick-off against Bournemouth , as Jota's death in a car crash alongside his brother Andre Silva in July cast a sombre cloud over the pre-game proceedings.
The players stood arm-in-arm with heads bowed, while fans wiped away tears and the words 'Rest in peace Diogo Jota and Andre Silva, you'll never walk alone' were displayed around the pitch.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot reflected on how the squad had coped following the death of their teammate.
'The squad is far better than I expected five or six weeks ago,' the Dutchman told Sky Sports before kick-off.
'At the moment in time you feel, will it ever be possible to play again, or will it ever be possible to get them going again?
'But as I said many times, they have conducted themselves so, so well in that period of time, when we first heard the news (about Jota's death) and afterwards.

The Liverpool players will wear a 'Forever 20' emblem on their shirts this season, while the club have retired Jota's No. 20 shirt across all levels of the club, including the women's team and academy, after consultation with Jota's family.
After 20 minutes and 20 seconds of the Aug 15 game, the Anfield crowd stood and cheered and sang their Jota song, set to the tune of Creedence Clearwater Revival's Bad Moon Rising.

Isak accuses Newcastle of breaking promises amid Liverpool interest

The 25-year-old forward said he informed Newcastle of his desire to leave a long time ago. "When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can't continue," he wrote on Instagram stories. "Change is in the best interests of everyone, not just myself." Newcastle did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Sweden international, who was the subject of a 110 million pounds ($148.34 million) bid from Liverpool earlier this month according to media reports, was named in the PFA Premier League Team of the 2024/25 season. However, he chose not to attend the ceremony due to ongoing issues surrounding his future. "I've kept quiet for a long time while others have spoken. This silence has allowed people to perpetuate their own version of events, even though they know it doesn't reflect what was really said and agreed behind closed doors. "The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. Acting as if these issues have only just emerged is misleading," he added. Isak missed Newcastle's goalless draw with Aston Villa on Saturday, and Eddie Howe's side are set to play defending champions Liverpool on Monday. REUTERS

Alexander Isak says ‘change' best for everyone after Newcastle trust broken
Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox Alexander Isak released a statement on Aug 19 saying his departure from Newcastle is 'in the best interests of everyone'. LIVERPOOL, United Kingdom - Alexander Isak believes his departure from Newcastle is 'in the best interests of everyone' after breaking his silence on the saga of the Premier League transfer window amid speculation over a move to Liverpool. The Swedish international, who was the second highest goalscorer in the Premier League last season, has not featured for the Magpies in pre-season or their opening game of the campaign, a 0-0 draw away at Aston Villa on Aug 16. Liverpool have reportedly had a £110 million bid (S$190 million) rejected for the 25-year-old, with Newcastle holding out for a British transfer record fee of up to £150 million. Isak released a statement on Aug 19 after deciding not to appear at the Professional Footballers' Association awards event despite being selected in the Premier League 2024/25 team of the year. 'I've kept quiet for a long time while others have spoken. That silence has allowed people to push their own version of events, even though they know it doesn't reflect what was really said and agreed behind closed doors,' Isak posted on Instagram. 'The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading. 'When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can't continue. That's where things are for me right now - and why change is in the best interests of everyone, not just myself.' According to reports, Isak had been promised an improved contract only for the club to hold off due to pressures of meeting financial sustainability rules. He has scored 62 goals in 109 appearances since joining from Real Sociedad in 2022, including the winner against Liverpool in the League Cup final earlier this year that ended Newcastle's 70-year wait to win a domestic trophy. Liverpool have already spent around £300 million in overhauling a squad that romped to the Premier League title last season. But they have also recouped over £200 million in sales and are still in the market for attacking options after the departures of Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez and tragic death of Diogo Jota. Any deal is unlikely to be done before the two clubs face off in their next Premier League game on Monday at St James' Park. AFP
