‘The Penguin' marches into Emmys with 24 nominations: Here's every category it landed — and where it slipped

The Penguin is waddling its way all the way to the Emmys. The HBO limited series racked up 24 Emmy nominations on Tuesday, including Best Limited Series and Best Movie/Limited Actor for Colin Farrell.
Here are the categories The Batman spin-off landed in — and the ones it missed.

Best Limited Series: Nominated
Throughout the winter awards circuit, The Penguin faced tough competition from Netflix's breakout hit Baby Reindeer, which swept the top prizes at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards after winning last year's Emmy for Best Limited Series. However, the 2025 Emmys race has a fresh new batch of competitors. The Penguin is up against a trio of Netflix entries — Adolescence, Black Mirror, and Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story — as well as FX's Dying for Sex.
Best Limited/Movie Actor: Nominated
Colin Farrell continues his quest for an awards grand slam — having already claimed the Golden Globe, Critics Choice, and SAG Award for his unrecognizable and chilling performance as Oz Cobb, aka the Penguin.
Farrell has been the front-runner on our odds chart all season. To complete his awards sweep he'll have to beat out fellow nominees Stephen Graham (Adolescence), Jake Gyllenhaal (Presumed Innocent), Cooper Koch (Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story), and Brian Tyree Henry (Dope Thief).
Best Limited/Movie Actress: Nominated
Cristin Milioti has secured her spot in the Best Movie/Limited Actress field after leading Gold Derby's odds all season. Her performance as mob boss Sofia Falcone reached the ultimate heights in Episode 4, "Cent'Anni," which chronicles Sofia's descent into darkness. The Critics Choice Award winner is up against Cate Blanchett (Disclaimer), Meghann Fahy (Sirens), Rashida Jones (Black Mirror), and Michelle Williams (Dying for Sex).
Best Limited/Movie Supporting Actor: Snubbed
Rhenzy Feliz was expected to score his first Emmy nomination for playing troubled teen, Victor Aguilar, Oz's right-hand man and eventual victim. Instead, the field was filled out by Javier Bardem (Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story), Bill Camp (Presumed Innocent), Rob Delaney (Dying for Sex), Peter Sarsgaard (Presumed Innocent), and Ashley Walters (Adolescence).
Best Limited/Movie Supporting Actress: Nominated
Deirdre O'Connell earned her first Emmy nomination for her portrayal of Francis Cobb, Oz's mother, who battles Parkinson's and Lewy body dementia. The veteran of stage and screen led our odds throughout much of Emmy season, but was recently bumped to second place by Adolescence's Erin Doherty, who is also in the mix. O'Connell and Doherty will both face off against Ruth Negga (Presumed Innocent), Chloë Sevigny (Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story), Jenny Slate (Dying for Sex), and Christine Tremarco (Adolescence).
Best Limited/Movie Directing: Nominated
HBO took a risk submitting four different episodes for consideration — likely to appease each director involved — but managed to get two nominations: "Cent'anni" (Helen Shaver) and "A Great or Little Thing" (Jennifer Getzinger). Other nominees for Best Movie/Limited Directing are Adolescence, Dying for Sex ("It's Not That Serious"), Sirens ("Exile"), and Zero Day.
Best Limited/Movie Writing: Nominated
Following their win at the 2025 WGA Awards, The Penguin seemed like a surefire contender for an Emmy nomination, so its spot on the list comes as no surprise. HBO also played it safe, submitting just one episode — "A Great or Little Thing" by Lauren LeFranc — to avoid a potential vote split. The Penguin will go flipper-to-flipper in this category with Adolescence, Black Mirror ("Common People"), Dying for Sex ("Good Value Diet Soda"), and Say Nothing ("The People in the Dirt").
Crafts
If there's one category where The Penguin felt like a sure bet, it was Best Prosthetic Makeup. Mike Marino's masterful handiwork completely transformed Colin Farrell into an unrecognizable, overweight, scarred, and beak-nosed mobster. Indeed, Marino made the cut and is surely the early front-runner. Other craft bids for The Penguin include production design, casting, cinematography, contemporary costumes, editing (three nods), contemporary hairstyling, title design, contemporary makeup, music composition, sound editing, sound mixing, special visual effects, stunt coordination, and stunt performance.Best of Gold Derby

Austin Nichols Teases ‘One Tree Hill' Revival As He Hopes For 'Some Good News Soon'

More than a decade later, Austin Nichols is ready to get back to his roots on the pending One Tree Hill continuation at Netflix. At Monday's world premiere of I Know What You Did Last Summer, in which he plays Pastor Judah, the actor revealed whether he'd reprise his role as filmmaker Julian Baker in the revival of the WB/CW drama, which originally ran for nine seasons from 2003 to 2012. 'I spent a lot of years doing that show and fell in love with Wilmington, North Carolina, and made a lot of great friends there. We had a lot of fun. And ultimately, when something still has this kind of excitement around it this many years later, you kinda go, 'Oh my god! Yeah, why not make more of it? People still watch it and love it.' 'So, I think it could be great. I know that they're writing scripts, and there's been some notes and some back and forth. It sounds good. Hopefully we have some good news soon,' added Nichols. Nichols joined the series with Season 6 in 2008, ending up married to Sophia Bush's Brooke Davis with twin sons at the end of the show's nine-season run. The sequel is said to take place 20 years after the original, following best friends Brooke Davis and Peyton Sawyer (Burton-Morgan), who are now parents to teens and facing challenges not unfamiliar to what they tackled in the original series like love, insecurities and grief, we understand. The project hails from writer/executive producer Becky Hartman Edwards and Warner Bros. TV. Danneel Ackles and husband Jensen Ackles are executive producing the project through their Chaos Machine banner with the former in talks to return as Rachel Scott. Emily Moss Wilson is a producer. Zack Snyder Can't Let ‘Rebel Moon' Die

Remember Rebel Moon? Netflix's two-part movie series created by Zack Snyder, released in late 2023 and early 2024, which then had two longer, bloodier versions released that same year? Snyder's answer to Star Wars, in which he created his own sci-fi world from the ground up? Ring a bell? If not, that's because they did well on the streamer but didn't quite resonate culturally like most probably hoped. Nevertheless, it seems Snyder isn't ready to give up on the franchise just yet. Case in point, Netflix just released Blood Line, a co-op campaign action game set in the Rebel Moon universe. More importantly, though, Snyder is leaving the door open to make more movies. 'I got sidetracked into this—not sidetracked, it's all uptown problems, as they say—for Netflix, I'm working on an LAPD SWAT movie,' Snyder told Variety. 'So I was like, 'Okay, well, I'm gonna just sort of let that Rebel Moon world boil for a minute, and I'm gonna go do this.' And frankly, it was a very exhausting, long process doing the two movies together. So it was nice to have a bit of a break from it. I love it like crazy, but it's nice to have a bit of a break. So yeah, we'll see after I finish this, when I come back, where we are with everything.' So it seems like a cop movie now, and maybe Rebel Moon later. Maybe. As for what it would be about, Snyder said it could be anything. 'There's tons of stories,' he said. 'So, I mean, I think it's literally, it's endless. But, again, like I say, I'm waiting to see how we want to and in what way we would move forward, if at all.' 'If at all' obviously makes it seem like maybe Rebel Moon is dead but, also, not. Personally, I think it was admirable that Snyder took such a big swing with the two, turned into four, sci-fi epics, but, frankly, they stunk. Do something else. Let it go. We just aren't sure he can. Are you a Rebel Moon fan? Do you want to see more in that world? Let us know below. Want more io9 news? Pete Davidson Net Worth in 2025 - How Much Money Does Pete Davidson Have?

Hi, so ICYMI, Pete Davidson has had a *VERY* busy past couple of years—and, no, we're not just talking about him gettin' busy with Elsie Hewitt. He may have left Saturday Night Live after an eight-season run, but the celeb has still got his comedy specials, stand-up tours, his super-successful foray into film, and his many endorsement deals. next for Pete after SNL? Currently, you can see his Netflix special Turbo Fonzarelli on the streamer, and coming up, he'll be in the forthcoming horror flick The Home and the buddy stoner comedy Wizards! And ya, you can also expect that his bank account will continue to explode, even without those SNL checks. Since we know you wanna know, we did a formal investigation* into Pete's earnings. Let's get into it, shall we? *Informal and vaguely unhinged deep dive. Before his season 47 exit (womp, womp), Pete was considered one of Saturday Night Live's most A-list cast members, and consequently, he got paid tons of $$$ for being cute/funny/charming. He first joined the cast back in 2014, and according to Celebrity Net Worth, he probs made $7K per episode. Each season of SNL runs for 21 episodes, so [*busts out elementary school multiplication skills*] that means Pete earned approximately $147,000 during his first season. However! The outlet also reports that SNL cast members get a MAJOR salary bump after five seasons, with their per-episode salary shooting up to $15K (which ends up being $315,000 for a 21-episode season). Oh, and apparently, SNL's highest-paid cast members make more like $25K per episode (or $500,000 a year), and considering Pete is household-name levels of famous now, it seems likely he was earning that half-a-mil paycheck by the end of his run. Emphasis on "likely" because this hasn't been confirmed. Before he became a bonafide movie star, Pete had bit parts in Trainwreck, What Men Want, and Set It Up—but let's assume he didn't make tooooo much from those gigs. Oh! And he was also the voice of Duck in a Prime original movie with the incredible name of Click, Clack Moo: Christmas at the Farm. If he didn't earn a cool mil for that role, we will be OUTRAGED. But over the past couple of years, Pete has had much bigger roles in movies like Big Time Adolescence, The Dirt, The Suicide Squad, King of Staten Island, and Bodies Bodies Bodies, among others. And like we said, he has a BUNCH of big projects coming up that are super lucrative, which brings us to.... Pete's original series Bupkis only had a one-season run on Peacock, but Variety reported that he got $500k per episode for it. And with a total of the eight episodes in season 1, we're looking at a cool $4 million. So 😭 happy 😭 for 😭 him 😭. Pete is still off social media, but not being on the interwebs doesn't stop him from getting ye olde celeb endorsements—he just gets 'em the old-fashioned way: commercials. Like these Verizon spots: And this HexClad commercial with Gordon Ramsey that aired during the 2025 Super Bowl: Again, earned income on these ads is rudely kept private, but considering Pete's total net worth (coming up in a sec), we're comfortable guessing that he got big time coin for these endorsements. Pete does a bunch of stand-up, and he's even released a handful of stand-up comedy specials, including Pete Davidson: SMD and Pete Davidson: Alive From New York. Again, it's unclear how much he's earned from his stand-up bookings and specials, but hey, maybe relatively small comedy tours are huge cash cows? Also, speaking of cows, have you watched Click, Clack Moo yet? Pete isn't out here flipping houses like some celebs do, but he did have two (2) homes in the glorious pastoral oasis known as Staten Island. Back in 2016, Pete reportedly bought his mom a $1.3 million house in his home borough, and in December 2020, he bought himself a $1.2 million condo a few blocks from his mom's place—though apparently, he's recently "moved into the woods" after buying a place in Upstate New York. Oh, and let's not forget about the decommissioned Staten Island ferry he casually bought with Colin Jost for a reported $280K. The plan is to turn the boat into a floating comedy club, but tbd whether that will actually happen. Celebrity Net Worth reports Pete Davidson's net worth in 2025 as $4 million. Yaaaas, Pete!
