Eye on Olympics glory, Nishika Agarwal perfects gymnastic routine
1 2 Hyderabad: An ankle injury she suffered while showcasing her gymnastics skills on the sidelines of the Miss Universe contest in Hyderabad in May this year, at the invitation of the Telangana govt, proved costly for Nishika Agarwal. The setback not just kept her off the mat for two months, it also forced her to miss the Asian Championship that was held soon after in South Korea. But powered by sheer grit and dedication, she is now back to the arena, sights firmly set on a gymnastics Olympic medal -- a dream India missed by a whisker when Dipa Karmakar ended fourth in the women's vault event by just 0.15 points at the 2016 Rio Olympics. You Can Also Check: Hyderabad AQI | Weather in Hyderabad | Bank Holidays in Hyderabad | Public Holidays in Hyderabad Following in the illustrious footsteps of her senior, Budda Aruna Reddy, who is also from Hyderabad, Nishika is now back to making rapid strides in a sport that is still in a nascent stage in India. Aruna, the first Indian to win a World Cup medal, has been the sole flagbearer for Telangana in gymnastics, representing the region both nationally and internationally. Training alongside the decorated gymnast, Nishika has been making steady progress, positioning herself to take on the baton with confidence. Nishika made her debut at the National Games in February this year as a 16-year-old, securing a gold medal in the table vault and a bronze in the all-round championship of gymnastics. Notably, she surpassed Olympian Pranati Nayak to reach the podium, making her achievement even more significant. She marked her entry into the senior category last year with remarkable success, winning gold medals in two national events. In the 2024 edition held in Surat, she claimed gold in the table vault and two bronze medals in the beam and all-round categories. Continuing her impressive streak, she earned two golds in the vault and floor events, along with a silver in the all-round category at the Pune competition in April 2025. These accomplishments point to a promising future for the young gymnast. Her journey in gymnastics began casually at a very young age, but her interest soon turned serious. "I started gymnastics just for fitness when I was seven years old. But I started liking it and took it seriously. Now, my goal is to win medals for the country in next year's Commonwealth Games and Asian Games," said Nishika, an Intermediate second-year student at The Gaudium School. She has been training under Manoj Rana, who was part of the national team for a decade before relocating to Hyderabad in 2022. "I started training her online during the Covid period when she was a sub-junior gymnast. I used to take online sessions from Sports Authority of India and had picked her from there. I have shifted my base to Hyderabad and it's been six years since I am training her," explained Rana, her coach. Looking ahead, she aims to compete in several international tournaments, including the World Challenge Cup in September. Eye on Olympic dream Though Nishika's primary targets are winning medals at the upcoming Commonwealth Games and Asian Games, her ultimate ambition is to score big at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. "I am working hard on it. But my ultimate goal is to win a medal for the country at the Olympics (LA Olympics in 2028)," she explained. Nishika credits her progress to training under an experienced coach and training alongside Aruna, which she finds motivating and key to keeping her focused. "Rana sir who trains Aruna Akka, has been training me for several years. Learning from her experience has been helpful. She shares her knowledge and guides me on and off the season as well," she said. Rana is optimistic about Nishika's future, highlighting her dedication and the extensive hours she commits to training. "She is a hard-working athlete. She trains six to seven hours daily and never complains. She is very determined. Vault and floor are her favourite events. The Olympics is a long way to go. Our focus now is on CWG and Asian Games," Rana added. Pointing out how gymnastics is associated with career-threatening injuries that can be difficult to deal with, he said Nishika stayed strong mentally after the two-month break she was forced to take due to her ankle injury earlier this year. Rana, who coached Aruna—the first Indian gymnast to win a medal at the World Cup in 2018 in Australia—expressed confidence in Nishika's potential. "She will bring medals in CWG and Asian Games if she continues to work hard. Nishika is good at twisting. We are working hard on her technique," he explained. Government support need of the hour Rana also feels that athletes need govt support to get exposure at international tournaments. "As of now, there is no ecosystem. The infrastructure at The Gaudium School is good. It is also helping with her education. But all the funding is being done by her parents now and it gets difficult." There are also other issues. "Every athlete needs not just training but also nutrition, a psychologist and a physiotherapist. We have to travel to Chandigarh or Delhi for physiotherapy. If we get help from the govt, it will be easier for us. Everyone comes for help after someone wins a medal. But we need support during the process," he adds. Future bright for gymnastics And though gymnastics is still a fledgling sport in India that sparked interest among aspiring athletes after Karmakar became the first Indian gymnast to qualify for an Olympic final, the veteran coach sees a good future for the sport in the country. "Gymnastics is growing now. Overall participation in gymnastics has increased. Corporates like JSW have invested in the sport and Odisha has become a very good centre. Since Dipa and Aruna got medals at international events and when Dipa finished fourth in the Rio Olympics, it popularised gymnastics," he said. He also pointed out that another positive sign is that gymnastics is now part of the sports curriculum in a few schools. "Gymnastics is the mother of sports. If you invest time in the sport, it will help athletes. But it will take some more time to yield desirable results at the international level," he added MEDALS TALLY International level · Gold in table vault at International Pharaohs Cup for Artistic Gymnastics, Cairo, Egypt (Dec 4-7, 2022) · Gold in table vault at International Pharaohs Cup for Artistic Gymnastics, Cairo, Egypt (Aug 18-20, 2023). · Gold in table vault at Velvet Road, Uzbekistan (Nov 21-24, 2023) · Bronze in table vault at Gymnova Cup, Keerbergen, Belgium (Nov 8-10, 2024) · Bronze in floor exercise at Velvet Road, Uzbekistan (Nov 21-24, 2023) At Senior Nationals · 2 Gold (table vault, balancing beam) and 2 bronze (floor and all-round categories) at the Senior National Championship in Surat (Dec 25, 2024-Jan 4, 2025) · 1 Gold (table vault) and 1 bronze (all-round) at the National Games, Dehradun, Uttarakhand (Feb 7-14, 2025) · 2 Gold (table vault and floor exercise) 2 silver (beam and all-round event) at the Senior National Championship in Pune (2025) Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Neeraj Chopra, Arshad Nadeem's Highly-Awaited Face-Off Won't Happen In August. Reason Is...
Indian's World Champion and Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra has withdrawn from Silesia Diamond League, scheduled for August 16, with Pakistan's reigning Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem also being absence from the list for the meet to be held in Poland. The meet was expected to be the first clash between the Indian and Pakistani rivals since their Paris Olympics 2024 face-off, where Arshad outclassed Neeraj with a record-breaking throw that earned him a gold medal, while Neeraj had to stay content with silver, as per The high-profile clash, teased by event organisers back in July, was in doubt as Nadeem underwent a surgery in his right calf during last month. The Pakistani star was ruled out of the competition by his coach and does not appear in the list unveiled this week. On the other hand, the reason behind Neeraj's absence is unclear. The Indian superstar has enjoyed a spectacular start to the 2025 season. Chopra took the top honours in the inaugural edition of the Neeraj Chopra Classic, a competition named after him at Sri Kanteerava Outdoor Stadium in Bengaluru last month. The reigning javelin throw champion stood triumphant with 86.18m. Neeraj kickstarted with a win at the Potch Invitational in Potchefstroom, South Africa, in April and followed it up with a very special second-place finish at Doha Diamond League, where he crossed the 90-metre mark for the first time ever, with a throw of 90.23 m. He also went on to secure a second spot in the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial in Poland later that month and resumed his winning ways with back-to-back titles at Paris Diamond League and Ostrava Golden Spike this month, with best efforts of 88.16 m and 85.29 m. Most recently came his NC Classic triumph in front of his home crowd. Neeraj and Nadeem are both aiming to take part in World Athletics Championships scheduled for Tokyo from September 13-21. During the previous edition, Neeraj had finished ahead of Nadeem to win the gold, becoming the first-ever Indian to land a gold at the marquee event. Before the prestigious Tokyo meet, the Lausanne Diamond League on August 20 will be the last major athletics event where Neeraj could get some game time.
