Neena Gupta says 'I've never been in love' — Anupam Kher recalls watching her from a far at NSD!

Anupam Kher
and
Neena Gupta
, who were classmates at the National School of Drama (NSD) in the late 1970s, have shared a long and layered professional journey. Years after their student days, they reunited for Rakesh Bedi's acclaimed stage play Mera Woh Matlab Nahi Tha, and later appeared together in two 2022 films—Sooraj Barjatya's Uunchai and Ajayan Venugopalan's Shiv Shastri Balboa.
Now, the duo returns to the screen in
Anurag Basu
's upcoming film Metro… In Dino, a spiritual successor to his 2007 anthology Life in a... Metro. In the film, they portray former college mates whose youthful affection never blossomed—until they reconnect decades later at a reunion, reigniting a sense of what might have been.
A Candid Conversation: NSD, Nostalgia, and New Beginnings
In an exclusive interview with SCREEN, the two actors reminisced about their NSD days, their views on love and heartbreak, and their current relationship with the city of Mumbai.
When asked if they remembered the moment they first met, Anupam shared:
'At the National School of Drama, the boys and girls stayed in the same hostel. She was a year junior to me. I first saw her when she came to the sink to wash her glass. I also used to watch her walk to a shop near Mandi House. I wasn't the kind of guy who'd get noticed. She was hard to miss. I'm pretty sure she doesn't remember me.'
On working with Anurag Basu's famously impromptu style, Neena said:
'Yes, we're used to last-minute dialogues.

We don't need to say 'Excuse me' and go to a corner to memorize lines. We can do that on the spot, especially if it's in Hindi. If it's in English, I might take a little longer. But this film was in Hindi, so we were happy.'
Anupam echoed her thoughts on the director's approach:
'Anurag's characters come from everyday life. We already understood our characters. Without realizing it, we worked the way we do in theatre. Even Shiv Shastri Balboa had that quality—it could easily be turned into a play.
That's the advantage of being experienced and trained actors—we bring our own layers to the work, something not always possible in commercial cinema.'
On Love, Loss, and Life
Both actors have evolved their own philosophies on love over the years.
Neena believes she has only known one true love—her daughter.
'I don't know what romantic love is. I only understood what love truly meant when Masaba (Gupta) was born. That's the only kind of love I've felt deeply.
Maybe I'm too practical to fall in love or be loved. I worry a lot and wonder if something's wrong with me. When I watch love stories or Western shows, I question why I've never felt like dying for someone.'
When asked about the time the late
Satish Kaushik
offered to marry her to shield her from social stigma, Neena reflected on the different kinds of love:
'That was the love of a friend. I can fall in love with anyone—my neighbour, my dog, my staff, my cook, my friends.
Sometimes, love in friendship is something else entirely.'
Anupam, meanwhile, takes a broader view of love:
'We often limit the idea of love to just romantic relationships. But love exists between parents and children, siblings, friends, and even pets. A love story doesn't have to be just about a man and a woman.'

Abhishek Bachchan recalls having fight with Aditya Chopra during this song in 'Dhoom 2', also featuring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan: 'He dances for his wife'

The villains of the 'Dhoom' franchise may keep changing, but the franchise is largely about Jai Dixit and Ali (played by Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra ). In a recent interview with ETimes, as Abhishek spoke about his 25-year old long journey in the movies, we also discussed some of his popular characters. During this chat, when pointed out to him that perhaps Jai Dixit shouldn't have danced in the 'Dil Laga' song from 'Dhoom 2', Abhishek agreed and he further recalled how he actually fought with producer Aditya Chopra for the same. Abhishek said, "I had a huge fight with Adi (Aditya Chopra) on that. My fight with Adi was that scene with Hrithik and me in the bar and we flip the coin. We say, kal dekhenge, aaj raat dhoom machale. The song starts. I said throughout the song I just want to be at the bar, just going to be clocking Aryan with his attitude like, 'I've given you tonight, you have fun. I'll see you tomorrow.' But Adi was adamant. We had a huge fight on it. He said no, the audience wants to see all the cast dance. I agree with you, that he shouldn't have danced. Jai Dixit doesn't dance for anyone, he dances for his wife. That's what I used to love about Jai. He is this 'hard as nail' cop outside, with a no-nonsense attitude. But with his wife, he is completely opposite. He is petrified of her." He added, "In the first scene, his wife comes to drop him and he's sitting behind on a scooter while everyone else is scared of him and she tells him, 'I want machhi and he's like okay baby I'll get it for you.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Install the Perfect Pool at Home – Start Here Backyard Pool | Search Ads Learn More Undo His wife is the only person who's got him wrapped around and I loved that dichotomy about him." Abhishek's character Jai Dixit was also seen dancing in the song 'Touch Me Soneya' in the film, with Bipasha Basu. However, he clarified that it was becuase she was Jai's high school sweetheart and it was a school reunion. "He wasn't working that time," said Abhishek. Though, he added that these are just small things which happen. "At the end of the day, the film did really well, so you also have to accept that maybe you don't know everything. 'Dhoom' is also not just this character-driven piece. It's a popcorn film. So, I think the justification was there. Don't use your brain too much (Laughs)," he said. When further asked if there can ever be a spin-off movie of his cop character Jai, Abhishek said, "A lot of people laugh when I say this but please try and understand the way I see it. Dhoom is the adventures of Jai and Ali. The villain has to be unsurmountable otherwise there's no fun. Every villain in any say for example superhero film has to seem like 'Oh this time you will not be able to catch them, but then he does catch eventually. So, for me, 'Dhoom' is the 'Adventures Of Jai and Ali'."

To rap on love

Singer-songwriter and rapper Karun has a hidden self. At heart, he is a poet. His poetry-writing began at school when he would feel down, lonely or when things were going out of control. But it took him more than ten years after school to step into the music scene. 'I was primarily a writer and I had to struggle a bit in the beginning to rap out words in a quick manner,' he says. In 2017, alongwith a music producer and rapper Nanku, and another friend, he launched Teesri Duniya, a platform to produce music. 'I had a baritone voice, and it was Nanku's idea to use my voice with rhythmic words. And that's how I became a rapper,' he says. His first album, Granth (2020), covers his formative years and feelings towards his family and friends. He produced Qabool Hai in 2021; it spoke of love and the forms of acceptance. His latest, Chehre (2025), which released on June 16, talks about human vulnerabilities. 'It's about the faces we put on at work, at home when we come back and sit with our parents, with relatives…' he says. A work of fusion Karun's Chehre deals with a range of human emotions. The first two songs of his album, 'Partein' and 'Anjaane', talk about how humans express their real feelings with time. 'We put a veil on our faces in the beginning. However, with time, this veil drops and we begin to express the real face that we were hiding all along,' says Karun. The third song, 'Mere Chehre', talks about the quest for freedom every human being nurtures. 'I wrote a poem in my childhood where I explored how we dream of escaping into a different world,' he adds. The fourth song, 'Zubaan', is about artistic mentalities. 'It talks about how an artist is born, how they portray themselves, and the challenges they face. 'Maaza' and 'Tere Hothon Pe' explore other human emotions,' says Karun. The album also mixes multiple musical genres like trap, lo-fi, and acoustic indie pop. It draws inspiration from the works of AR Rahman, among others. For instance, 'Zubaan' channels the spirit of AR Rahman's 'Satrangi Re' through its rhythm and tonal choices. 'Kaisi' revisits the famous phrase 'Kaaga Re Kaaga Re' from Meera Bai's bhajan. His influences Growing up, he was inspired by the work of Gulzar. 'Since I am a songwriter, I give special attention to lyrics. If you are an ardent listener to Bollywood music, you will realise that both Gulzar and Javed Akhtar have written most of the timeless songs of Bollywood. The work of Irshad Kamil has also influenced me,' says Karun. Other than listening to Bollywood melodies, Karun is influenced by Urdu and Hindi literature. 'My paternal family is from Punjab. My grandfather spoke Urdu. The Urdu words he would use are now part of my vocabulary. Then my mother, who is a Master's in Hindi, would read out the stories of Munshi Premchand to me. So, my Hindi is good. Both these languages have remained with me,' he says.
