Nagarjuna, Ram Gopal Varma's cult classic Siva to be re-released in theatres; teaser to be attached with Coolie

Hindustan Times2 days ago
Ram Gopal Varma's Nagarjuna-starrer Siva is credited by many filmmakers and actors as an inspiration and widely considered one of the finest Indian films ever made. 36 years after it hit the screens, the cult-classic is releasing again. The actor recently took to social media to announce the re-release of his film in theatres. Siva starred Nagarjuna and Raghuvaran in the lead roles.
Siva re-releases in theatres
As part of the 50-year celebrations of his production house, Annapurna Studios, Nagarjuna is re-releasing several of Annapurna's past hits, including Siva. On Friday, he took to X (formerly Twitter) and wrote, 'Hello, my friends! We are bringing back the most iconic film SHIVA and for the first time in 4K DOLBY ATMOS sound.' Apart from Nagarjuna, the film also starred Amala and Raghuvaran.
Nagarjuna added that the teaser of the new 4K version will be attached with his upcoming film, Coolie, which stars Rajinikanth in the lead and releases on August 14. No release date for Siva has been announced yet.
Nagarjuna and RGV on Siva re-release
Excited about the re-release, Nagarjuna said in a statement, 'Shiva was the film that gave me an iconic hero status, making my character truly unforgettable. The fact that it remains one of the most talked-about films even after 36 years motivated my brother Venkat Akkineni and me to plan its re-release in the grandest way possible. We felt we owed it to the audience who made it such a cult classic, and also to a new generation who may have only seen it on YouTube. So RGV, Venkat, and I decided to present it once again to audiences with an unprecedented DOLBY Atmos sound experience and 4K visuals.'
Director Ram Gopal Varma added, 'Nagarjuna's and the producers' trust in me is what helped the film reach such great heights. It's unbelievable that even today, people remember every scene and character. Annapurna Studios' decision to re-release it has truly thrilled me. Although the original sound was highly appreciated, it was decided to redo it entirely to match today's standards. By using advanced AI technology, we have converted the original mono mix to Dolby Atmos. People might have seen Shiva before, but I promise no one has experienced it the way they will now, with its new sound.'
Siva was one of the biggest hits in Telugu cinema at the time of its release. Varma remade it in Hindi the following year as Shiva, with Nagarjuna reprising his role. The Hindi remake was a hit, too. Apart from its enormous box office success, 'Shiva' was also featured in the Indian Panorama mainstream section of the 13th IFFI (1990) and won three Nandi Awards: Best Director (Varma), Best First Film of a Director, and Best Dialogue Writer for Tanikella Bharani.

Abirami Bhattar, the poet who praised Goddess Sakthi in his Abirami Andadi, describes Her appearance, said M.A. Manickavelu in a discourse. He says the Goddess wears bangles, which are made of conches. These bangles are studded with multi-coloured beads. She is the embodiment of auspiciousness. All the arts were created by Her. There are said to be 64 arts. She is the Mother of all of them. Her speech is an example of how fine, pleasant, meaningful speech itself is an art. She is like a divine peacock. This peacock is the fountainhead of all the fine arts. Bhattar describes Her as sakalakalaamayil (Abirami, the peacock, who is the repository of all arts). The fine arts are Her feathers. She takes up one half of Lord Siva's body. Abirami Bhattar recalls the descent of the river Ganga to the earth. The river came with full force, with the idea that no one was capable of bearing the impact of her arrival on earth. But Lord Siva trapped her in His locks, thereby saving the earth from the impact. Siva's act of trapping the mighty river also helped curb the pride of Ganga. There was a Tamil poet called Kalamega Pulavar. He was asked to compose a verse with a line in it that spoke of the river Ganga being held in a pot (kutam). Kalamegha Pulavar came up with a verse, which said the river Ganga could not be deterred by the sky, or by hills, or by the earth. But she was caught by Siva in His matted locks. The poet cleverly incorporated the line he was asked to include in the verse. His poem went: sataamakutathile gangai adangum, meaning the Ganga was caught at the top of Siva's sataamakuta (sataa — matted locks; makuta — top of). Remove the letters 'sa-taa-ma.' You are left with kutathile gangai adangum, which means the river Ganga can be contained in a pot.

Deepika Padukone steps back from acting role in ‘The Intern' remake to focus on producing: Report

Bollywood star Deepika Padukone has decided to step away from acting in the Indian remake of 'The Intern', choosing instead to focus solely on her role as a producer. According to a report by Mid-Day, a source close to the project shared that Padukone will no longer play the female lead in the film. 'This time, Deepika will step away from acting in the film to serve solely as a producer, overseeing the creative and logistical reboot. A new leading lady is being cast to play the part she was once slated to perform,' the source said. Padukone, who has previously co-produced films under her banner KA Productions, is reportedly using this opportunity to widen her creative role in filmmaking. ''The Intern' is the first of five projects she plans to mount in the coming year. She is looking to tell stories that are globally relevant,' the source added. The Intern, a remake of the 2015 Hollywood film starring Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro, was first announced in 2020. Deepika was to play the role made famous by Hathaway, while the late Rishi Kapoor had been cast in De Niro's role. Following Kapoor's passing, Amitabh Bachchan joined the project as the senior intern. Despite the strong buzz, the film has seen several delays. The Covid-19 pandemic, Padukone's maternity break, and scheduling issues have pushed the project back multiple times.
