Cucurella goal sees Chelsea through despite defeat by inspired Legia Warsaw

The Guardian17-04-2025

Enzo Maresca is still not feeling the love. This was another uneven performance from Chelsea, who at times seemed intent on raising Legia Warsaw's hopes of a comeback for the ages, and few at Stamford Bridge seemed minded to celebrate their side securing a Conference League semi-final.
It was not supposed to be this difficult. Legia were 2-1 winners on the night and there were times when Chelsea, who went through 4-2 on aggregate, toyed with humiliation. Filip Jörgensen, Robert Sánchez's understudy, was jittery in goal and the worries for Maresca extended to Palmer failing to take an opportunity to end his barren run against meagre opposition. Palmer, who has gone 15 games without a goal, cut a frustrated figure in the final third. He was not alone.
Nobody turned up expecting that they might be about to witness a Polish remontada. The main intrigue revolved around why Enzo Maresca chose to name such a strong side when Chelsea led 3-0 from the first leg. There was no rest for Marc Cucurella at left-back and if there was surprise at Palmer and Nicolas Jackson starting in attack, it was possible to interpret an evening in the company of the Ekstraklasa's fifth best side as an opportunity for both forwards to play themselves back into form before the run-in.
That seemed a sound enough theory when Palmer surged through in the second minute, only to send a wonky shot wide. Would his goal drought ever end? The frustration gnawed at Palmer. He spurned another chance moments later, failing to turn in a rebound after Jackson had a shot saved by Vladan Kovacevic, and the gamble was looking decidedly foolish when a nasty challenge from Tomas Pekhart left Chelsea's chief creator hobbling in the 20th minute.
Chelsea were behind by that stage, Pekhart squeezing a penalty past Jörgensen after being fouled by the goalkeeper, and were far from secure. The first hint of discontent from the home support came when Ryoya Morishita ran through on the right and shot just wide.
The topless travelling fans carried on singing. It was left to Cucurella, Chelsea's top scorer in 2025, to calm the growing unease, equalising from close range when Jadon Sancho delivered a good ball from the right.
Jackson, without a goal since December, was replaced by Tyrique George at half-time. But Chelsea's distribution was poor and a mistake from Josh Acheampong almost led to Claude Gonçalves heading past Jorgensen.
This will not go down as one of Chelsea's great defensive performances in Europe. Tosin Adarabioyo and Benoît Badiashile were unconvincing in the middle and there was inertia when Legia regained the lead, everyone in blue ball-watching as a corner was recycled and Steve Kapuadi bundled in from six yards out.

Chelsea began to panic, Jorgensen nervily pushing another cross away. Now the crowd booed. Maresca responded by taking off Palmer for Noni Madueke. Kovacevic soon had to make a series of eye-catching saves. Jorgensen, meanwhile, came close to conceding another penalty after spilling an effort from Luquinhas.
Chelsea, who had not tasted defeat in this competition before, escaped. They will have to better in the next round. There cannot be many teams who have been booed off after reaching the semi-finals of a European competition before.

Chelsea told to sign 'exciting' €28m Norway international star in summer window

Tore Andre Flo believes his former club Chelsea should sign Norway international star Antonio Nusa in the summer transfer window. The Blues are looking to recruit a new winger after sending Jadon Sancho back to Manchester United following his loan spell in west London. They are already in talks to sign Borussia Dortmund's Jamie Gittens but Flo feels Nusa – who plays for RB Leipzig – should also be in Chelsea's sights. The 20-year-old, who is valued at €28m (£23.6m) by Transfermarkt, can be deployed as a winger or attacking midfielder and is under contract with his current club until 2029. Flo has been left impressed by his Norwegian compatriot after his performance in the 3-0 World Cup qualifying win over Italy on Friday, in which Nusa assisted his country's first goal and then scored the second. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. 'I've been watching the national team for a bit now,' Flo, who played 76 times for Norway from 1995 to 2004, told Metro via Nusa joined Bundesliga side RB Leipzig from Club Brugge in August 2024, signing a five-year deal. He's played 36 times for RB Leipzig to date, conjuring up a total of 12 goal involvements. Nusa has particularly impressed on the international stage for Norway, scoring five goals and registering seven assists across 14 caps. 'There are some big superstars in there but [Chelsea] wouldn't be able to buy Erling Haaland or Martin Odegaard. There is a player called Antonio Nusa. 'I think he is very, very exciting. I've just seen him play against Italy and he was amazing in that game. I think he'd be possible to buy for a big club like Chelsea.' Meanwhile, Flo feels that AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan is a 'very smart' signing for his old club in the summer transfer window. 'There has been a lot of talk about the goalkeeping position at Chelsea,' Flo said. 'I think it was on the cards that something was going to happen there. 'It sounds like a good signing to me. A club like Chelsea would improve the squad straight away if there was any doubt [over Robert Sanchez]. To me it sounds very, very smart.' Chelsea signed Ipswich striker Liam Delap in a £30m deal this summer and Flo has set a goal target for his first season at Stamford Bridge. More Trending 'If you are a striker for Chelsea, there is a chance to score well over 20 goals,' Flo added. 'If you want to be successful you need to score 20. But it depends on how he will share his time playing [with Nicolas Jackson]. 'Is one going to play 80 per cent of the time? So it's hard to put a number – but I think it's possible to get 20.' Chelsea in race to seal TWO transfers and beat FIFA Club World Cup deadline

Chelsea remains in talks to land both Mike Maignan from AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens and want the duo before their Club World Cup campaign Chelsea are hoping to complete TWO transfers ahead of the Club World Cup - one of which is landing a new goalkeeper in Mike Maignan with talks remaining ongoing with AC Milan. The Blues, like several of the club competing in FIFA's new tournament, are looking to get their business done early. Enzo Maresca wants to bring in a new No.1 and they've targeted the Frenchman but are currently well short of Milan's valuation of the player. ‌ They've lodged a new £15million offer which they hope will be enough to sign Maignan, who is about to enter the final 12 months of his contract at the San Siro. Chelsea 's initial £10m valuation of the 29-year-old was nowhere near the £25m Milan ideally want. ‌ If a deal can be struck then Maignan will become Chelsea's new first-choice goalkeeper and the player himself has made it known that he wants to move to Stamford Bridge, where several shot stoppers have tried and failed to make the position their own. Chelsea know they are poised to lose one of their goalkeepers with Arsenal closing in on a deal to sign Chelsea's Kepa Arrizabalaga for £5m. The Spaniard is aware that he has no future at Stamford Bridge after several loan spells away - the most recent coming at Bournemouth - and is set for Arsenal in a cut-price deal due to the release clause in his contract. The Blues are also keen and remain in discussions with Borussia Dortmund over Jamie Gittens. The England U21 international could be on the move but the Premier League side know they must do more to tempt the German club after having a £29.5m opening bid rejected - as first reported by the Evening Standard. Gittens, who was once on Chelsea's books as a youngster before leaving to pursue first-team opportunities. Dortmund may ask for as much as £50m for the 20-year-old winger. He is the latest English player to excel at the Bundesliga club after Jadon Sancho and Jude Bellingham both excelled. Chelsea and Dortmund are both competing at the Club World Cup in the United States and have until Tuesday night's transfer deadline to get a deal done if he is to be playing in blue, rather than yellow, come the tournament. On Monday the west London side confirmed the signing of teenage defender Mamadou Sarr, who joins from sister club Strasbourg for a fee of £12m. Maresca's major summer signing thus far is the £30m capture of Liam Delap, who joined from Ipswich.

Sam Thompson reveals Soccer Aid appearance is hanging by a thread – and horrifying after-effects of 260 mile bike ride

SAM Thompson has revealed his Soccer Aid appearance is hanging in the balance as he continues to recover from his gruelling charity run. The I'm A Celeb king, 34, raised more than £1.5m for Unicef by running and biking 260 miles from Stamford Bridge, Chelsea, to Old Trafford, Manchester, where the game will be played at the weekend. 4 Sam carried the matchday ball in a backpack for the duration of the journey and was joined by famous pals at various points as they tried to motivate him through the pain barrier. Speaking on Hits Radio today, Sam revealed his battered body is still suffering. He said: "I am so tired but elated. I'm so glad we got it done... "Never again [am I getting on a bike] I think I'm prone to saddle issues! After day one I still to this point can't feel bits of my privates. I'm being deadly serious! "The bike is a wild thing, Tracey who was with me going up these hills when we were skirting round the edge of Wales, that was mad and you're just going so slowly and you feel like your bike is going to topple over! I did think to myself this is the first time I've ridden a bike in so long..." Detailing how adapting for one leg issue has aggravated others, Sam continued: "Because I was running in a different way my shin was really inflamed so I couldn't even run on my tiptoes so I was running side to side. "I describe it as plugging holes, so like the calf tears so that's one hole you've got to plug so then I run on my tiptoes with my leg straight. "OK well that then messes up my ankle ligaments because everything is running through your ankle; then your ankle ligament explodes so then you can't do that... you're trying to play chess against yourself, whilst trying not to panic because I can't move my leg and it's still pretty bad." Though it's up in the air if he'll be fit in time to step onto the pitch at the weekend, Sam is still going to be a presence at training sessions in the build up under the care of Gary the physio. He said: "I'm just going to go lie on his bed every single day and get a rub down...!" Sam Thompson breaks down in tears as he's comforted by sister Louise and family after completing 260-mile endurance challenge on This Morning Sam cuddled his sister Louise after finishing the challenge but his girlfriend Samie Elishi wasn't in attendance. He also received a phone call from Orlando Bloom in the This Morning studio who congratulated him on the superhuman effort. Chris Hughes, Ryan Libbey and Josh Patterson were all on hand at various points of the challenge to offer support. This Sunday's game will see huge celebs battle it out in an England XI v World XI. The teams are being managed by Tyson Fury and Wayne Rooney, respectively. 4
