Pentagon to start using Grok as part of a $200 million contract with Elon Musk's xAI

CBS News2 days ago
The Pentagon has signed on to use Grok, the AI chatbot built by Elon Musk 's company xAI, as part of a new $200 million agreement that opens the door for its deployment across the federal government, the company announced Monday.
The announcement comes amid Musk's public breakup with President Trump and days after Grok generated antisemitic responses and praised Adolf Hitler.
The rollout is part of "Grok for Government," a newly launched suite of tools designed for use by federal agencies, local governments, and national security operations. xAI said its products, including its latest Grok 4 model, will now be available for purchase through the General Services Administration (GSA), allowing any federal office to adopt the technology.
The move aligns with the Trump administration's push for more aggressive adoption of artificial intelligence across the government. Since taking office in January, Mr. Trump has championed AI as a pillar of national security and innovation.
Musk himself briefly served in the Trump administration earlier this year, overseeing the White House's Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, before stepping down in May amid a public break with Mr. Trump over his sweeping tax and spending bill. Musk has since emerged as a sharp critic of that legislation, even floating the idea of launching a third political party.
Despite the rift, xAI has continued to expand its government work. The new offering includes custom national security tools, AI-powered science and health applications, and cleared engineering support for classified environments.
The announcement comes just days after Grok generated antisemitic responses to user prompts and referenced Hitler as part of what the company called an effort to make the model "less politically correct." Hours later, Musk wrote in a post on X that "Grok was too compliant to user prompts. Too eager to please and be manipulated, essentially. That is being addressed."
The posts were later deleted and xAI said it "quickly" patched the issue. One day later, xAI launched an upgraded version of Grok it described as a major leap forward. Musk also announced that Grok would be used in Teslas.
But the latest version was not without kinks, too: Grok checked with Musk's views before answering a question, according to The Associated Press.
Grok was introduced in late 2023 as a more unfiltered alternative to other chatbots like ChatGPT, and is already integrated into Musk's social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.
"America is the world leader in AI," xAI said in Monday's post announcing the Pentagon deal. "We're excited to contribute back to the country that made xAI uniquely possible here."

Ballots for August primary will be mailed Wednesday

Jul. 16—Registered voters in Spokane County should expect to receive their ballots as early as Thursday for the August primary, and are encouraged to return them as soon as possible. The Spokane County Auditor's Office will begin to mail ballots Wednesday for the Aug. 5 election. This year's ballot includes races for school boards, fire commissions and city councils alongside several local measures. "As soon as the ballots start going out, our drop boxes are open," Spokane County Auditor Vicki Dalton said Tuesday. "So all you need to do is look for the most convenient drop box and put it in there, or you can just put it right back in the mail, no postage required." Dalton said that voters should expect to receive a printed voter's guide, which is mailed to every household in the county. The guide includes information regarding what's on the ballot, candidate-submitted information and statements, and statements of support and opposition for any issues on the ballot. The voter's guide is also available online at Dalton said voters who don't receive their ballot in the mail by the middle of next week can contact the auditor's office to double-check that their registration is up to date with their current address. "Because sometimes that is the problem. It may be that you're registered for a different jurisdiction, or that you're not even registered for Spokane County. Maybe you moved from King County and never changed your voter registration," Dalton said. The deadline to register to vote or to update your registration online or through the mail is July 28. "After that point, you need to actually physically come into the office," Dalton said. Voters can update their voter registration in person through 8 p.m. on election day. The deadline to submit a ballot at a drop box is 8 p.m. on election day. Ballots submitted by mail must be dropped in the box early enough to be postmarked Aug. 5. "We do hope that people study the information, make a decision, get their ballots marked, and get them sent in early," Dalton said. "Please don't wait until election day or close to election day to send them back." Dalton said that waiting to return a ballot can mean delayed results as ballots submitted on election day slowly trickle in in the following days. Voters can check their ballot status online at "I know that everybody wants the results quickly, but if everybody waits until right at the end, it's going to take us time to get those results done," Dalton said. Initial results in the election will be released at around 8:15 p.m. on election day. The election will be certified on Aug. 19. Typically, turnout for both primaries and off-year elections trails the turnout for elections with a presidential race at the top of the ticket. While more than 77% of registered voters submitted their ballots in the November 2024 election, only 24.9% did so in the August primary in 2021. Solve the daily Crossword

Wall Street's Chip Darling Stocks Set to Shine Again, Says Oppenheimer

If you thought the chip rally might be running out of steam Oppenheimer doesn't. The firm just came out swinging with a new note; they're betting big on semiconductors, and they expect Q2 earnings to beat the Street, thanks to a red-hot AI infrastructure boom and signs of life in autos and industrials. Warning! GuruFocus has detected 4 Warning Signs with NVDA. They've raised their price target for Nvidia (NVDA, Financials) to $200, up from $175 a nod to what they see as unrelenting demand for GPUs, particularly with the Blackwell platform ramping up ahead of the GB300 launch later this year. Broadcom (AVGO, Financials) got a PT hike too, from $265 to $305; that's a pretty confident jump. What's driving the optimism? A few things starting with the sheer scale of AI data center builds. Oppenheimer says hyperscalers are now deploying over 1,000 Nvidia NVL72 racks every week; by year-end, they estimate more than 40,000 racks could be online. That's staggering and it's fueling demand for custom chips, power-hungry accelerators, and high-speed networking gear. But it's not just Nvidia. Custom silicon from AMD (AMD, Financials), Broadcom, and Marvell (MRVL, Summary) is seeing strong adoption too; as workloads grow more complex and compute-hungry, these firms are stepping in with purpose-built solutions. There's also a quiet comeback brewing in auto and industrial markets. Semiconductor content in cars is growing at over 10% a year; that's great news for NXP (NXPI, Financials) and Texas Instruments (TXN, Financials), which are both positioned to benefit as EVs and ADAS (advanced driver-assistance systems) become standard. Even with the SOX index already up 58% since April, Oppenheimer's not backing down. They're still bullish and they're looking past short-term volatility to what they see as a long-term structural growth story, tied to AI, electrification, and edge computing. In other words: this chip rally may still have legs. This article first appeared on GuruFocus.
