A 2023 survey revealed that 30% of college students admitted to using AI to complete work they didn't fully understand, highlighting a critical disconnect between AI assistance and genuine learning. The problem isn't AI's presence in education—it's how these tools have been designed.
Educational experts observe that most AI tools entering classrooms today are optimized for output rather than learning. These systems excel at generating essays, solving complex problems, and providing comprehensive explanations—capabilities that inadvertently encourage academic shortcuts.
Traditional AI operates as sophisticated answer engines, designed to be helpful by providing immediate solutions. While this approach serves many purposes in professional settings, it fundamentally misaligns with educational goals. Learning requires struggle, reflection, and the gradual construction of understanding—processes that instant answers can circumvent entirely.
The Socratic solution
The answer lies in reimagining AI as a Socratic partner rather than an oracle. This revolutionary approach, exemplified by innovations such as Claude's Learning Mode, GPT-4's enhanced reasoning capabilities, and Google's Bard educational features, along with similar tools being developed across the education technology sector, transforms AI from a source of answers into a facilitator of inquiry.
Instead of responding to 'What caused the 2008 financial crisis?' with a comprehensive explanation, a Socratic AI might ask: 'What economic factors have you already considered?' or 'Which indicators do you think played the most significant role?'
This approach extends beyond economics into other critical fields. In healthcare education, rather than immediately diagnosing a patient case study, AI might prompt: 'What symptoms are you prioritizing in your assessment?' or 'Which differential diagnoses have you ruled out and why?' In finance training, instead of providing investment recommendations, AI could ask: 'What risk factors are you weighing in this portfolio decision?' or 'How do current market conditions influence your analysis?'
This method draws from centuries of educational theory. Socratic questioning has long been recognized as one of the most effective ways to develop critical thinking skills. By prompting learners to examine their assumptions, articulate their reasoning, and explore alternative perspectives, it builds the intellectual muscles that passive consumption cannot develop.
Early adopters see promising result
Several major institutions are already pioneering this approach with remarkable results. Northeastern University's deployment of AI across 13 campuses, affecting over 50,000 students and staff, demonstrates the scalability of thoughtful AI integration. The London School of Economics and Champlain College are similarly experimenting with AI tools that enhance rather than replace critical thinking.
Researchers have found that when students use AI as a thinking partner rather than an answer source, they develop stronger foundational understanding before engaging with more complex classroom discussions. Educational institutions report that students arrive in class better prepared with more focused, sophisticated questions.
These early implementations reveal several crucial success factors:
Ethical boundaries: Effective educational AI must be programmed to refuse requests that undermine learning integrity. This isn't just content filtering—it requires AI systems designed with educational principles at their core.
Faculty integration: Success requires AI tools that complement rather than replace instructors. The most effective implementations support teachers by helping students engage more meaningfully with course material.
Student preparation: When properly introduced to these tools, students quickly adapt to using AI as a collaborative thinking partner rather than a homework completion service.
The technology behind thinking
Creating effective AI tools for critical thinking requires careful consideration of both technical and pedagogical factors. Educational AI is being built with what developers call a 'Constitutional AI Framework'—explicit ethical guidelines that prioritize learning over convenience, embedded in the model's core reasoning rather than added as superficial filters.
These new systems feature adaptive questioning that adjusts based on student responses, becoming more sophisticated as learners demonstrate greater mastery. Multi-modal interaction capabilities support various learning preferences through text, voice, visual, and interactive elements, while strict privacy protections ensure student data remains secure.

Advanced AI systems can analyse the sophistication of student questions in real-time, providing educators with insights into developing intellectual curiosity that traditional testing cannot reveal.
Argumentation quality: Modern assessment focuses on students' ability to construct well-reasoned arguments supported by credible evidence, acknowledge counterarguments, and build logical connections between premises and conclusions. Evaluators examine whether students can distinguish between correlation and causation, recognize bias in sources, and present balanced analyses of complex issues.
New rubrics assess the strength of evidence selection, the logical flow of reasoning, and students' ability to anticipate and address potential objections to their positions. This approach values the process of building an argument as much as the final conclusion, recognizing that strong reasoning skills transfer across all academic and professional contexts.
Transfer or learning: Perhaps the most crucial indicator of educational success is students' ability to apply critical thinking skills across different subjects, contexts, and real-world situations. These studies examine whether students who experienced Socratic AI education demonstrate superior problem-solving abilities, greater adaptability to changing professional demands, and more effective leadership skills in their post-graduation lives.
Portfolio-based assessment: Rather than relying on isolated examinations, innovative institutions are developing portfolio systems that document students' thinking evolution over time. Students themselves may initially resist AI that doesn't provide immediate answers, requiring a learning curve to engage effectively with Socratic AI tools.

Former Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal has introduced Parallel Web Systems Inc., a cloud platform built to help artificial intelligence systems conduct large-scale online research. Mr Agrawal, who was fired by billionaire Elon Musk after he took over Twitter (now known as X) in 2022, founded Parallel in 2023 and has since assembled a 25-member team in Palo Alto. The company has already secured $30 million in funding from marquee investors, including Khosla Ventures, First Round Capital, and Index Ventures. "We already power millions of research tasks every day, across ambitious startups and public enterprises," Mr Agarwal wrote on LinkedIn. "Some of the fastest growing AI companies use Parallel to bring web intelligence directly into their platform and agents. A public company automates traditionally-human workflows exceeding human-level accuracy with Parallel. Coding agents rely on our search to find docs and debug issues," he added. Parallel has also announced the launch of its Deep Research API, which Mr Agrawal says is the first to outperform both humans and leading models, including GPT-5, on two of the most challenging benchmarks. Unlike humans, who browse a few pages or run short searches, AIs might comb through entire databases, spend hours processing information, or pull facts instantly at massive scale. Old business models won't work. Today's web relies on human attention like clicks, ads, paywalls, and gated APIs. But these models aren't designed for machine use, and they risk locking valuable knowledge behind silos. A "Programmatic Web" for AIs. Parallel argues the internet must evolve into a system designed for machines, one that supports reasoning, computation, and verified sources. Key Principles Of Parallel The company outlines key principles of this new web: Unified infrastructure combining data, compute, and reasoning, producing insights and actions instead of just static documents. Declarative interfaces where AIs say what they need, and the system decides how to get it. Transparent attribution so every source is credited, and contributions can be measured. Open markets where value is rewarded economically, ensuring openness thrives not just by goodwill but by financial incentives. Parallel frames this as either the web adapting to serve its "second user" (AI) or it risks breaking apart. How Parallel Will Work Parallel is creating a version of the internet built for AI. Instead of humans clicking and searching, AIs will be able to ask for information directly, and Parallel's system will gather, process, and organise it. It will also give credit to sources and reward those who contribute. In short, Parallel makes it easier and fairer for AIs to use the web to find answers and create insights. Parallel's mission is about "building for abundance".

Sam Altman's brain chip venture is mulling gene therapy approach
The brain chip company that has drawn interest from Sam Altman and his artificial intelligence business OpenAI is exploring the idea of genetically altering brain cells to make better company, which has been referred to as Merge Labs , is looking at an approach involving gene therapy that would modify brain cells, according to people familiar with the plans who weren't authorised to speak publicly on the matter. In addition, an ultrasound device would be implanted in the head that could detect and modulate activity in the modified cells, these people one of a handful of ideas and technologies the company has been exploring, they said. The crown jewel of the Tata Group has shed nearly ₹5.66 lakh crore in market value, tumbling 34% from its peak of ₹4,585.90, making 2025 its worst year since that fateful 55% crash 17 years ago. The stock is down 26% in 2025 alone, slashing its market capitalization to ₹10.93 lakh crore from a peak of ₹16.59 lakh rout comes amid a weak demand outlook, the disruptive impact of generative AI and a mixed Q1 scorecard, all of which have triggered a foreign investor exodus. FIIs, who once considered Indian IT their favorite trade, have slashed holdings in TCS from 12.35% in June 2024 to 11.48% in June 2025. Their broader selling has inflicted even deeper pain across the sector with the Nifty IT index plunging 25% so far this year, making it the worst-performing pocket of the market. Out of ₹95,600 crore pulled by FIIs from India in 2025 through July, more than half came from IT stocks funds, however, have played contrarian. Domestic institutions raised their TCS stake from 4.25% to 5.13% in one year and July data showed ₹400 crore of fresh MF meanwhile, have been reset sharply. TCS's trailing PE has halved from 41x to 20x with five-year profit CAGR at 8.5% and stock CAGR at 6%. It reflects a weak demand environment,' Jefferies warned, adding that firms unable to capture AI-led productivity gains may have to resort to layoffs. The brokerage remains selective on IT, preferring Infosys and HCL Tech, which it sees as a stronger alternative to TCS.
