'Mamma Mia!' returns to Broadway after a decade away, bringing the dance party back to New York

NEW YORK (AP) — When the musical 'Mamma Mia!' said goodbye to Broadway a decade ago, there were tears and hugs and tons of applause. In the audience of its last show, one woman wasn't entirely buying it.
'I felt then that it wasn't goodbye forever. I felt we'd be back one day,' says producer Judy Craymer, who had conceived of the show in the 1980s. 'I always hoped.'
That one day has become today as the ABBA-fueled, feel-good musical returns to its first home on Broadway, the Winter Garden Theatre. It reopens Thursday night.
'It's like when you go to visit the old place where you went to high school,' says Victor Wallace, who made his Broadway debut in the show in 2012, stayed to the final curtain in 2015 and has returned. 'There's so many backstage stories and people and I'm a little overwhelmed.'
Fans have fueled the return of 'Mamma Mia!' to make it among the top earners on Broadway, last week grossing $1.57 million over seven previews, fourth behind only 'Wicked,' 'The Lion King' and 'Hamilton.'
'A time of peril'
'Mamma Mia!' endured plenty during its first Broadway life — wars, hurricanes, the 2008 financial meltdown, the move to a smaller theater and critics, who never warmed to the show's high-energy sweetness.
A hit in London — where it is still playing — 'Mamma Mia!' opened in New York just a few weeks after the 2001 terror attacks when there was deep gloom and anxiety.
Christine Sherrill, who recently toured as the show's mom and is now making her Broadway debut in the role, says audiences are responding to another time of stress.
'We're kind of in a time of peril again, where communities are divided. So to be able to go into some of these cities and have 3,000 people — who would never find themselves enjoying the same thing outside of the theater — sitting there all enjoying this communal experience is really interesting.'
The show, featuring more than 20 classic ABBA hits, including 'Dancing Queen' and 'Waterloo,' has been a smash in dozens of countries, including South Korea, Italy, Denmark, South Africa and Spain.
Craymer sees the data about the new flock of theatergoers and notes this 'Mamma Mia!' is popular with groups. 'There were people that had seen it on Broadway — probably when they were younger — and now coming back in their 20s and 30s and then bringing their daughters or family.'
A Greek story is born
Craymer decades ago approached members of ABBA and made her pitch: Instead of doing a musical about the band, she insisted that their songs help tell an original story.
Craymer teamed up with playwright Catherine Johnson, and a story set on a Greek island was born about a young woman who is about to be married and wants her father to give her away. But she's not sure who he is, so she invites her mom's three former lovers to her wedding.
The musical prompted Craymer to produce a movie version starring Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth, that became the fifth highest-grossing film of 2008. A sequel, 'Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again,' came out a decade later. ABBA's music continues to be the backdrop for numerous popular TikTok trends.
In some way mirroring the joy onstage, backstage at 'Mamma Mia!' is a party backstage, too, with milestones celebrated, outings, door decorating contests and gatherings
'Because of the nature of the show, I think it just bleeds into life backstage and that joy that you see on stage, it just overflows into our lives,' says Wallace.
Themes of the 'Mamma'
Wallace, who started in the musical's ensemble and grew to play the young leading man, Sky, and now is one of the three possible dads, says the show is about friendship, parenthood, hope and second chances.
'It's always surprising how the show surprises you emotionally,' he says. 'It's a great time. It's fun. But I think people identify with these themes and these characters and I think that people are caught off guard as to how the show captures their heart and moves them.'
Sherrill looks at the story through a mother's eyes and realizes she's a different person than she was before she had twins. She offers another theme.
'It's a lot about finding your identity,' she says. 'I think that appeals to people on all levels — all people, all levels. Everyone's trying to figure out who they are and what the best version of themselves is. So, I think, that's sort of a universal message that's really playing on people's heartstrings as well, at least mine.'

Last drive-in movie theater in Allegheny County to celebrate major milestone

The last remaining drive-in movie theater in Allegheny County is celebrating a major milestone this weekend. Dependable Drive-In on Moon Clinton Road in Moon Township is hosting a family-fun event full of entertainment on Saturday to celebrate 75 years in business. "Back in 1950, something magical happened with the strip mine. It turned into a drive-in," said Jay Glaus, the director of operations at Dependable Drive-In. Glaus talked to KDKA-TV on Friday about the history of the drive-in, saying the land was first used as a strip mine. "It was the Dependable Coal Company. Pat Springer actually was a local Moon Township native. He had the Dependable Coal Company here on this land, and it was a strip mine. 'You got coal,'" Glaus said. "A lot of drive-ins back then that were strip mines were turned to drive-ins because when you strip the land, it kind of lent itself the way it was shaped." Since the land became a drive-in movie theater, it's become a destination for families ready to make memories under the stars. "I don't think anyone back then, when the drive-in first started, could imagine what it would become today," Glaus said. "You can't imagine how many people we get that come out here that say, 'Oh, my parents used to bring me when I was a kid, and now I'm bringing my kids,' and it just goes generations." The drive-in was founded in 1950 and is the last drive-in in Allegheny County. The owners said they're committed to "preserving the magic of outdoor movies for years to come." "A lot of people treasure the drive-in because it's just a different type of movie-going experience, and there's just kind of more freedom, you know? More time you can spend playing ball. You see a lot of families, fathers and sons or what have you, just playing catch before the movie. And that's something that they're going to remember, that that kid is going to remember those times later on and in their life, and those memories were created here," Glaus said. To celebrate its 75th anniversary, the drive-in is welcoming its customers and community for a day full of family fun on Saturday. Glaus said Steel City Gamers will offer laser tag and a foam pit free of charge to attendees, and Quack-A-Doodle-Doo Petting Zoo will be there with plenty of animals. "There's going to be a ton of animals for everyone to meet and play around with. We're going to have face painting. We're going to have caricatures. It's going to be a great day. We're going to have our concession stands open. You can get all the food that you know and love here at the drive-in: chicken baskets, burgers, dogs, pizza, mac and cheese bites," Glaus said. "We're even going to have a little trivia scavenger hunt." He said souvenirs and collectable merchandise will be available for purchase to celebrate the anniversary. "It's our way of giving back and saying thank you for 75 years, we're looking forward to 75 more," Glaus said. To end the night, attendees can catch a double feature under the stars. Screen one will play "Freakier Friday" and "Fantastic Four." Screen two will play "Weapons" and "Together," while screen three will play "Bad Guys 2" and "Jurassic World Rebirth." "The admission, we have an early bird special. If you arrive here between 4 and 5:30 p.m., you actually pay less, and you get to be here longer. It's $8 for adults and $4 for children. Our normal price is $10 for adults and $5 for children. So, if you arrive early, you get to pay less. And from 530 p.m. on, our normal pricing will resume," Glaus said.

Resilient artists return to Montauk Art Show after alleged drunk driver plowed through it

Weeks after an alleged drunk driver plowed through the Montauk Artist Association's annual summer art show, ruining artwork, breaking hearts and causing thousands in damage, the show has returned. The artists say they're stronger than ever. Jewelry designer Jacqueline Clint turned the destruction into determination, remaking most of her inventory, one bead and wire at a time. Kent lost $80,000 worth of jewelry in the initial incident. Her new booth is set up just feet from where the crash happened. "Its taken a long time. I am not at 100%, but I feel like I am almost there," Clint said. "Every available minute of my day, I am making jewelry." What was destroyed in a matter of seconds has taken her weeks to rebuild. "It's my passion. I really didn't have a choice to just stop making jewelry, I don't want to, and I felt like I cant think about what happened. I just have to pick up and move on," Clint said. In June, a 23-year-old driver who was allegedly under the influence plowed her SUV through the popular Montauk Plaza. Show organizers said she barreled through at least six tents, destroying nearly everything. All but one of those tents returned for the second part of the show. "Anyone who can come here and pick up the pieces and just keep going again, tells you a lot about the resiliency of these people." Montauk treasurer John Papaleo said. Photographer Jim Levison is another of the returning artists. His damage tallied up to roughly $30,000, but he said his love for art was never destroyed. "Yes, it feels good to be back in business," Levison said. The artists aren't just displaying their work. They're showing off what it means to rebuild. The art show will be going on all weekend. There's also an active online fundraiser for the artists which has already reached roughly $24,000.
