Anne Hathaway to play Taylor Swift-inspired popstar in upcoming film

Daily Record14-07-2025
Anne Hathaway will reportedly be part of a "lesbian power couple" with Michaela Coel in new film Mother Mary directed by David Lowery.
Anne Hathaway is set to take on the role of a pop star with a likeness to both Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift. However, she is tipped to have a concealed dark side in the upcoming film, Mother Mary.
The new movie will feature Princess Diaries star Anne Hathaway alongside Michaela Coel, who is rumoured to be playing her partner in a "lesbian power couple". Coel has previously been acclaimed for portraying Arabella Essiedu in BBC 's I May Destroy You.

Coel steps into the role of a fashion designer and a long-standing pal of Hathaway's character, pivotal to her public image. Mother Mary promises an original narrative interwoven with musical elements, according to reports in the Mirror.

Featuring a soundtrack that includes contributions from Charli XCX and Jack Antonoff, the film is complemented with singing and dancing. The project is under the direction of David Lowery, known for his work on A Ghost Story (2017), The Green Knight (2021), and Pete's Dragon (2016).
Discussing the demanding role and its intricate choreography in a Vogue interview, Anne Hathaway shared: "I had to submit to being a beginner. The humility of that, showing up every day knowing you're going to suck, and it has to be okay.
"You're not 'bad, you're just a beginner. Getting to that mindset - I had to shed some things that were hard to shed. It was welcome. But it was hard, the way transformational experiences can be hard.
"My body was so locked up, I literally couldn't take a deep breath. I'd been trying to open that space for years and I thought it was physically impossible. All my breath, it was stuck."

Coel has also shared insights into her deep dive into character preparation, revealing she attended techno clubs in Cologne, Germany during the shoot and even brought co-star Hathaway along for the experience. She praised the script as "vivid" and spoke of how the cast were "forced into an intensity" throughout the production.
Lowery recounted a particularly intense moment on set: "It felt like shooting Apocalypse Now. At one point Annie [Hathaway] broke down and said, 'I have to apologise, because I think what's going to come out of me will hurt you,' and Michaela [Coel] took her hands and said, 'I love you, I trust you.'".
Mother Mary is described by Deadline as an "epic pop melodrama following a fictional musician and her relationship with an iconic fashion designer". Other sources suggest Hathaway and Coel will portray a "lesbian power couple battling fame".
The film boasts a stellar supporting cast including Jessica Brown Findlay, Sian Clifford, Alba Baptista, FKA twigs, Kaia Gerber, and Hunter Schafer. While the release date remains under wraps, it has been tipped for a 2026 debut.

I love Sherlock but a reboot would be the worst idea ever

Nothing has made me feel older than the harrowing realisation that BBC's Sherlock came out 15 years ago today – yes, you read that right. The year was 2010, Matt Smith had completely won me over as the Eleventh Doctor in Doctor Who, my Saturday nights were spent hooked to the new episode of Merlin and, on July 25, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman took over our screens in a modern take on Arthur Conan Doyle's famed detective novels. In short (for nerds everywhere), it was the perfect storm – and it's one that can never be repeated in a reboot. It's because I'm such a fan that I can't stand the idea of it ever coming back, despite repeated calls for it to be picked up again. There's no denying that co-creators Steven Moffat (also the Doctor Who showrunner) and Mark Gatiss knew exactly what they were doing at the time with the show's popularity reaching fever pitch. Benedict and Martin's chemistry as literary duo Holmes and Watson practically burst off the screen (the flirty dynamic between the pair cultivating an even bigger fanbase). Sherlock was not a 'psychopath but a high-functioning sociopath'. This, and 'I am Sherlocked' were plastered onto mugs and T-shirts at every Comic-Con as far as the eye could see, and the phrase 'mind palace' entered everyone's vocabulary. The show was an instant hit and I, like millions of others, became completely hooked – only heightened by the introduction of Andrew Scott as Moriarty, which is arguably the best bit of casting to ever grace British TV (shortly followed by Andrew Scott as Hot Priest). You simply had to be in fandom spaces in the two year gap between the season two finale, The Reichenbach Fall, where Sherlock jumped off a hospital building and supposedly died in front of John, and the season three opener in which – ta-da – he wasn't dead. Ten million people tuned in overnight for the long-awaited return, which spent a large portion basically mocking all the unhinged theories fans had posed before concluding the best explanation was no explanation. (Yes, it haunts me to this day). It was after this where, for some, the show started to go downhill with complaint after complaint from disappointed fans who believed the mysteries were becoming over-involved, the reveals outlandish and the writing thin on the ground The Rotten Tomatoes score plummeted from the 90% mark to the 60% mark by season four, with the finale causing such outrage fans thought there was a second secret surprise ending on the way. Despite the clear nosedive the show took at the time, nostalgia (and rose-tinted glasses) is a powerful drug and, since moving on, the cast and creators have been regularly plagued with the one million dollar question – would they ever do a reboot? There's mixed enthusiasm from their end, especially with a booked and busy Benedict and Martin, who no doubt aren't interested in rewinding the clock on their career by a decade. Just last month Gatiss was asked for the millionth time whether a reboot could ever happen to which he replied a definitive no because 'Benedict and Martin didn't want to do [it] anymore.' And I can't help but echo their sentiments for more than one reason. Firstly, the show's aesthetic fit a very specific cultural era that played wonderfully to their audience. But even by the end of the original run this charm was wearing off. I don't think bringing it back now would be any different. Then there's the fact that, frankly, I'm tired of reboots and remakes of all kinds. It feels like playing into the current creative brain drain that has resulted in the HBO Harry Potter remake, Freakier Friday and yet another I Know What You Did Last Summer. Of course, there is a place for that nostalgia-driven content but we are at a point of oversaturation that has instantly turned me off the idea of any kind of trip down memory lane. Finally, we come to Sherlock itself – a treasured piece of media that has been done various times over the years, from Robert Downey Jr's movie to Henry Cavill and Millie Bobby Brown as the Holmes siblings in Netflix's Enola Holmes. More Trending I'm not sure we need to revisit another one – especially with the third Enola Holmes movie on the way. There needs to be room for more than one iconic detective on TV and I just don't think there's the appetite for BBC's Sherlock in the way there was 15 years ago. The fact of the matter is that nothing will ever be able to replicate the unexpected appeal of the first run, so it feels almost inevitable that any reboot would be terrible. It's better to bow out while you're ahead. View More » My suggestion – take this milestone as a sign to whack on A Study in Pink and reminisce about the good ol'days. Woman behind viral Jet2 voiceover's rise to fame – from Butlins job to soaps role

A Jet2 advert audio has gone viral on TikTok with many users adding it to funny travel or holiday clips but people are only just learning who does the voice of the now global meme If you've been on social media in the last few weeks you've probably heard a certain Jet2holidays meme audio. It quickly went viral, largely due to a TikTok trend, and people are only just realising the familiar voice behind it. ‌ The voiceover star is Zoë Lister, who played the role of Zoe Carpenter in Hollyoaks from 2006 to 2010. After that she was a writer for Hollyoaks and some children's TV dramas for 10 years but today she is most recognisable for voicing a Jet2holidays advert that features the catchy line 'nothing beats a Jet2 holiday' with Jess Glynne's song Hold My Hand playing in the background. Zoë told Mirror she recorded this voiceover around 18 months ago but in the last few weeks it has 'just exploded around the world". ‌ A TikTok trend has dominated the platform and it involves short clips of travel blunders and funny holiday moments with the Jet2 campaign soundtrack. ‌ There are currently 1.4 million TikTok videos using the Jet2 jingle and more than 192,000 clips using the hashtag Jet2holidays. What's more mind-blowing is Jet2holidays is a UK operator that only flies to destinations across Europe but the voiceover has reached global online audiences. Zoë, who has worked on the Jet2holidays voiceovers for seven years, was completely taken by surprise when she noticed the audio had gone viral. ‌ She said she is 'permanently astonished' and has received messages from people across the world. The 43-year-old mum-of-two, who grew up in Redditch in the Midlands, added: 'TikTok is amazing because it reaches so many people and so many different kind of audiences are on it and responding to things and making really funny content with whatever they can find and you know I guess the voiceover because it's so relentlessly upbeat it lends itself well to parody videos.' Zoë has even been asked to perform the voiceover on stage at festivals in the UK and shared she thinks last year was 'Brat girl summer' and 'this year is like Jet2 girl summer". ‌ She explained she first started being sent videos in October of people using the Jet2holidays voiceover on funny travel videos and she saw a post on TikTok or Instagram of someone dressed as Jess Glynne for Halloween and someone else dressed as a flight attendant who did the voiceover. The funniest video Zoë has seen using the viral audio meme is one of a woman on a fast rollercoaster who gets hit in the chest by a flying seagull and then realises she needs to get the bird off her. Zoë explained: 'We (Brits) love to take the mickey out of things and finding everything funny basically but what has been surprising is the fact that the rest of the globe are in on it as well even though they don't know what a Jet2 holiday is.' ‌ The voiceover artist revealed that initially she was unsure how Jet2 felt about the viral nature of the meme and two weeks ago she was 'crying' to her husband as she was worried that Jet2 might rebrand. Luckily, she later found that Jet2 'have a great sense of humour' so she didn't need to worry as it has 'turned into the best ad campaign for years'. ‌ Zoë's career started as a singer and dancer for Butlins before she moved to London and became an actress, TV writer and began doing voiceovers. She first got involved with Jet2 when they sponsored Love Island and then she ended up doing the whole campaign. The mum-of-two has since done many different ad campaigns for Jet2 which has kept her busy and described it as 'quite a gift of a job.' Zoë also disclosed a new project she is working on inspired by the viral success of the Jet2 campaign: 'I am going to launch a podcast and I think it's going to be called Absurdly Camp Z Lister because I did ask Chat GPT what it was about the voiceover that people have so responded to and Chat GPT was like quite rude and said 'the absurdly camp delivery' and that phrase has really stuck with me and I'm like I'm just going to lean into this.'
