K'taka gold smuggling case: Ranya Rao booked under COFEPOSA Act
The Central Economic Intelligence Bureau (CEIB), a nodal agency under the Ministry of Finance has invoked the COFEPOSA Act against the actress and other accused as per the recommendation of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), probing the case.
Following the invocation of COFEPOSA Act, the accused Ranya Rao will have no chance to get bail for a period of one year.
The Act is invoked in order to stop the accused from indulging in smuggling once they come out on bail. The Act is also invoked if the accused is seen as not cooperating with the investigating agencies, sources stated.
Sources revealed that the central agencies have taken the step, following the repeated attempts by Ranya Rao and others in the case to obtain bail. The other accused Tarun Raju and Sahil Sakaria Jain have also been booked under the COFEPOSA Act.
Ranya Rao, the stepdaughter of senior police officer Ramchandra Rao, was arrested on March 3 for allegedly smuggling 14.2 kilograms of gold, valued at over Rs 12.56 crore.
Ranya Rao and the other two accused in the case are presently lodged at the Bengaluru Central Prison.
The case is being investigated by the DRI, the Enforcement Directorate (ED), and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The state government has set up a special team led by a senior IAS officer to look into the role of DGP Ramachandra Rao. The report in this regard has been submitted to the government, sources stated.
The investigation into the gold smuggling case by the DRI has revealed that the actress had been involved in hawala transactions in collusion with Jain, the third accused in the case.
The DRI, in its remand application submitted to the Special Court for Economic Offences in connection with the arrest of Jain in the gold smuggling case, alleged that the jeweller and Ranya Rao were involved in a hawala nexus.
The investigations have found that with the help of Jain, Ranya Rao disposed of 49.6 kg of gold and transferred Rs 38.4 crore of hawala money to Dubai.
The DRI stated, "The investigations have indicated that Jain, hailing from Ballari and settled in Bengaluru, assisted and abetted Ranya Rao in disposing of 49.6 kilograms of gold worth around Rs 40 crore and transferring hawala money of Rs 38.4 crore to Dubai."

Mamta Pathak, a 65-year-old woman, was convicted in 2022 for the murder of her husband by electrocution. The division bench of Justices Vivek Agarwal and Devnarayan Mishra dismissed her appeal, ruling that she killed her husband, Neeraj Pathak, a retired government doctor. The case had grabbed attention after a video of Mamta Pathak arguing for herself in the courtroom went viral online. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Let's take a closer look. What's the case? On April 29, 2021, Dr Neeraj Pathak was found dead at his Loknathpuram house in Madhya Pradesh's Chhatarpur. The autopsy found that the cause of his demise was electrocution. Police grew suspicious about Mamta due to her behaviour on the day of Dr Neeraj's death. She had left with her son in the morning for Jhansi for dialysis, without informing anyone about her husband's demise. The woman also told her driver that she had made a 'big mistake', Indian Express reported, citing court documents. Mamta, a professor at a local government college, was arrested within days for murder and booked under Section 302 (punishment for murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The trial was held at the Chhatarpur district court. Dr Neeraj's relative told the court that the doctor had called him hours before his death, saying: 'Mamta is harassing me… she has locked me in the bathroom and hasn't given me food or water.' On June 26, 2022, the district court found Mamta guilty of her husband's murder based on witness testimonies and the recovery of a plug-in wire and sleeping pills at her residence, the newspaper reported. Additional Sessions Judge Rajesh Kumar Devaliya convicted her to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000. Mamta filed an appeal seeking suspension of sentence before the High Court's Jabalpur Bench. How Mamta Pathak defended herself before HC On March 12, 2024, Mamta presented her arguments before the Madhya Pradesh High Court. The former professor argued that the prosecution's case was based on circumstantial evidence linking her to her husband's death, pointing out that there was no direct evidence or eyewitnesses. Seeking suspension of sentence and bail, she furnished medical records to highlight her health issues, including suspected bone cancer. Mamta also told the high court that she was the sole caregiver for her mentally and physically ill son. Her video challenging the post-mortem report during a hearing went viral in May this year. The clip showed Justice Vivek Agrawal asking Mamta at the time, 'The allegations against you are that you murdered your husband through electrocution. The post-mortem doctor has categorically said there were signs of electric shock.' Mamta told the court that it is 'not possible to differentiate between thermal and electric burn marks during a post-mortem'. The bench ruled that Mamta was not on good terms with Dr Neeraj. It found she tortured him to death by giving him an antipsychotic drug and then an electric shock, as per a Bar and Bench report. The court asked her to immediately surrender before the trial court. It also dismissed her submission that her husband died from a cardiovascular disease. The bench also rejected her claim that she was falsely implicated by her husband's relatives, who were after his property. The court said that the couple's sons are Class-I heirs to Dr Neeraj's property. The motive for the murder, the court found, was marital discord with Mamta suspecting her husband of having an affair. Teacher held for 'obscene' video call to male student on social media
Police on Tuesday (July 29, 2025) arrested a 35-year-old woman teacher for allegedly making an obscene video call to a minor male student on a social media platform in Navi Mumbai, an official said on Tuesday. The Koparkhairne police took action against the teacher after the boy informed his parents about her act, he said. The parents lodged a complaint at the Koparkhairane police station, based on which case was registered against her under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act against her, he said. "After that, the accused teacher was arrested. The court then remanded her in police custody for one day," the official said, adding that the police were trying to find out if the teacher had indulged in similar acts with any other student.

3 men held in Kolkata for extortion through dating app for LGBTQ+ community
Kolkata Police have arrested three men for their alleged role in an extortion racket involving a dating app commonly used by members of the LGBTQ+ community. The arrests came after a complainant approached the police on July 17, claiming that the victim was lured to a secluded location and coerced into transferring nearly Rs 97,000. The FIR, filed at Ballygunge police station under Sections 308(2) (extortion) and 3(5) (common intention in criminal acts) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, alleges that the complainant met a man who identified himself as 'Ashish' through the app. The two allegedly then met in front of K B Motors on Gurusaday Road. The victim was then allegedly taken to an abandoned hutment near Ballygunge Circular Road, where 'Ashish' and two others allegedly threatened to ruin the complainant's reputation. Under pressure, the victim allegedly transferred Rs 96,888 across multiple bank accounts as demanded. The complainant alleged that the accused had initially suggested meeting near Ballygunge railway station. Following the complaint, the police launched a search operation and, acting on specific intelligence, arrested one of the accused—Bijay Stephen Singh (31)—around 1:15 am. According to officers, further investigation is underway to trace the money trail and identify if the accused were involved in similar offences previously.
