3 men held in Kolkata for extortion through dating app for LGBTQ+ community
The FIR, filed at Ballygunge police station under Sections 308(2) (extortion) and 3(5) (common intention in criminal acts) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, alleges that the complainant met a man who identified himself as 'Ashish' through the app. The two allegedly then met in front of K B Motors on Gurusaday Road.
The victim was then allegedly taken to an abandoned hutment near Ballygunge Circular Road, where 'Ashish' and two others allegedly threatened to ruin the complainant's reputation. Under pressure, the victim allegedly transferred Rs 96,888 across multiple bank accounts as demanded.
The complainant alleged that the accused had initially suggested meeting near Ballygunge railway station.
Following the complaint, the police launched a search operation and, acting on specific intelligence, arrested one of the accused—Bijay Stephen Singh (31)—around 1:15 am.
According to officers, further investigation is underway to trace the money trail and identify if the accused were involved in similar offences previously. Authorities are also examining whether the app was systematically misused to target individuals from the LGBTQ+ community.

Prajwal Revanna gets life sentence in rape case
Bengaluru: In a significant ruling, the Special Court for MPs/MLAs in Bengaluru sentenced former JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna to life imprisonment till death in the rape case. The case involved an obscene video and the rape of a 47-year-old woman. Pronouncing the punishment, the special court Judge Santhosh Gajanan Bhat also imposed a fine of Rs 10 lakh on the convict. The court also ordered a fine of 7 lakh rupees to be paid to the victim. The court delivered the verdict yesterday while the quantum of sentence has been pronounced today. Prajwal Revanna is also facing three additional cases of a similar nature. The case pertains to the sexual assault of a woman who worked as a maid at the guest house owned by the Revanna family. In her testament, the victim had stated before the court that she was raped twice.

Punjab: Man held for issuing life threat to son of Congress MP Randhawa
The Batala police on Saturday arrested a man for allegedly issuing a death threat to Udhayveer Singh Randhawa, son of Congress MP from Gurdaspur, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa. Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Suhail Qasim Mir said the arrest followed a complaint filed by MP Randhawa earlier this week. 'The MP's son uploaded a video on his Instagram account around 3 pm on July 31. In response, a user operating under the name 'Gagan Randhawa' left a threatening comment, which was subsequently deleted,' he said. The suspect, identified as Gagandeep Singh of Ghaniye Ke Bangar village, currently residing at Gulmarg Avenue in Amritsar, was apprehended early Saturday morning. The SSP also highlighted the preventive measures already taken in relation to Bhagwanpuria. 'The jail administration in Silchar and the Narcotics Control Bureau have been formally informed multiple times to enforce strict surveillance and take action to prevent any form of illegal communication or directives from being issued from the jail,' he said. The arrest follows a public statement on Friday by MP Randhawa, alleging that his son had been threatened by Bhagwanpuria. The investigation remains ongoing.
