Liverpool fan arrested after allegedly yelling racist remarks at Bournemouth star in shocking situation
A 47-year-old Liverpool fan who was last seen in a wheelchair was arrested Saturday after allegedly shouting racial slurs at Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo in a stunning scene that led to Friday's Premier League opener in England being delayed for several minutes. Meyerside police confirmed the fan was ejected from Friday's match and then announced his arrest one day later on allegations of a racially aggravated public order offense. He has been taken into custody to be interviewed. 'Last night at Anfield will stay with me forever – not because of one person's words, but because of how the entire football family stood together. To my @afcbournemouth teammates who supported me in that moment, to the @LiverpoolFC players and fans who showed their true character, to the @premierleague officials who handled it professionally – thank you,' Semenyo posted to social media Saturday. Advertisement 'Football showed its best side when it mattered most. Scoring those two goals felt like speaking the only language that truly matters on the pitch. This is why I play – for moments like these, for my teammates, for everyone who believes in what this beautiful game can be. The overwhelming messages of support from across the football world remind me why I love this sport. We keep moving forward, together.' 7 Semenyo hearing the alleged remarks. @BPINewsOrg/X The uplifting message came after he previously posted to his Instagram Story a message sent to him with racially charged images, which he captioned: 'When will it stop……' Advertisement The shocking scene unfolded in the 28th minute of a scoreless game during the Premier League's opener in Liverpool. 7 Semenyo (second from right) while the game was stopped. Reports stated the game was delayed for two to three minutes. The Premier League released a statement alleging 'discriminatory abuse from the crowd' that resulted in an investigation, while Liverpool condemned the fan's alleged behavior. 'The incident at Anfield will now be fully investigated. We offer our full support to the player and both clubs,' the Premier League said. 'Racism has no place in our game, or anywhere in society. 'We will continue to work with stakeholders and authorities to ensure our stadiums are an inclusive and welcoming environment for all.' Semenyo responded by tallying both of his goals in the second half, and teammate Adam Smith told Sky Sports that Semenyo's toughness to handle it all showed his character. 'It shouldn't be happening,' Smith told the outlet, as transcribed by ESPN. 'I don't know how Ant's played on to be honest and come up with those goals. It's totally unacceptable. Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk also spoke out in support of his opponent, calling it a 'disgrace.' 7 Semenyo celebrates during Friday's match. But in general, racism is not of this world in my opinion, but if we are to be realistic, unfortunately, it still exists and that is the painful side of it. 'We have to deal with it in the here and now.' 7 Referee Anthony Taylor looks on with AFC Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola and Liverpool manager Arne Slot after the game was paused due to a report of racial abuse from the crowd by AFC Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo. Police launch hate crime probe in Liverpool after fan's alleged racial abuse of Semenyo during game
LIVERPOOL, England (AP) — Police launched a hate crime investigation after ejecting a 47-year-old fan from Liverpool's stadium for his alleged racial abuse of Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo during the opening match of the Premier League season. The incident occurred Friday night at Anfield when Semenyo, who is Black, reported the abuse to referee Anthony Taylor in the first half with the score at 0-0. Play was briefly stopped while Taylor spoke to both coaches and team captains. 'Merseyside Police will not tolerate hate crime of any form,' said Chief Inspector Kev Chatterton, the match commander. The fan's identity was confirmed and he was removed from the stadium, police added. 'We take incidents like this very seriously, and in cases like this we will be proactively seeking football banning orders, with the club, against those responsible,' Chatterton said. Semenyo, who scored both of Bournemouth's goals in the 4-2 loss, later posted further racial abuse that he received online. 'When will it stop,' the 25-year-old Ghana international wrote on his Instagram account. Bournemouth players had consoled Semenyo and an anti-discrimination message was read out to the crowd inside Anfield after the halftime whistle. The Premier League also said it will investigate the incident and 'offer our full support to the player and both clubs.' In a statement, Liverpool said it was aware of the allegation and that it condemns 'racism and discrimination in all forms.' 'The club is unable to comment further as tonight's alleged incident is the subject of an ongoing police investigation, which we will support fully,' it added late Friday.

NYC construction kingpin who funneled illegal donations to Mayor Adams' 2021 campaign apologizes to taxpayers as he gets wrist-slap sentence
A Brooklyn construction kingpin apologized to New York taxpayers Friday as he was handed a wrist-slap sentence for funneling illegal donations to Mayor Eric Adams' 2021 campaign. Erden Arkan, 76, the owner of KSK Construction Group in Williamsburg, had faced up to six months behind bars under federal sentencing guidelines, but prosecutors and a probation officer agreed no prison time was warranted. 'I'm simply sorry to the New York taxpayers,' said a rueful Arkan before he was sentenced to one year of probation in Manhattan federal court. Advertisement The Turkey native pleaded guilty in January to a wire fraud charge for illegally reimbursing his employees for roughly $18,000 of donations they made toward Adams' successful 2021 campaign for mayor. 3 Construction kingpin Erden Arkan told the court that he was sorry for helping rip off taxpayers in the campaign scam. William Farrington The Adams campaign then used those funds to fraudulently hoover up public dollars under a city program that matches donations 8-to-1 with taxpayer cash, prosecutors alleged. Advertisement The feds said Adams had personally asked the wealthy magnate and a Turkish diplomat for campaign cash at an April 2021 dinner. Arkan tried to convince other members of the city's Turkish community to bundle donations to Adams at a fundraiser he held soon after the meeting at his business's headquarters, court papers said. 'Unfortunately, this is how things work in this country,' he allegedly wrote to his colleagues. Adams was charged in September 2024 with taking $123,000 in travel perk bribes and ripping off taxpayers with bogus campaign cash from Turks in exchange for help fast-tracking the opening of the Manhattan Turkish consulate building. Advertisement 3 Arkan's business has netted more than $1 billion since its founding in 2003, his lawyer said. @teachstats / Instagram But the Justice Department under President Trump took the unusual move in February of pushing for the historic corruption case against Hizzoner to be dismissed, without commenting on the strength of the prosecution. The judge overseeing both Adams and Arkan's cases, Dale Ho, has suggested that the DOJ moved to toss the charges in exchange for the mayor's help rolling out the White House's immigration agenda. Adams pleaded not guilty and has also denied allegations that there was a crooked 'quid pro quo' tied to the case dismissal. Advertisement Arkan's lawyer, Jonathan Rosen, accused the government on Friday of being 'unfair' and inconsistent in continuing to prosecute his client after Ho agreed to toss Adams' case. 3 Federal prosecutors moved to toss Adams' case earlier this year without commenting on the strength of the evidence. REUTERS 'I'm commenting on the incoherence,' Rosen said. But a visibly irked Ho shot back, 'What impact does that have on the decision before me today?' The judge added that Arkan — who said his company netted more than $1 billion in revenue since its founding in 2003 — had otherwise lived an 'exemplary' life before his arrest, before wishing him good luck in the future. 'I promise to do good. This will never happen again,' Arkan told the court. On top of the one year of probation, Arkan was ordered to pay $18,000 in restitution and a $9,500 fine. A rep for Adams' 2025 campaign did not respond to a request for comment.
