All over the country, state legislators, school boards and federal agencies are endeavoring to diminish LGBTQ people — both in fiction and everyday life. It's times like this you might wish for a queer person with super-strength and lasers to swoop in and save the day. As we fight on the ground, here are some of the best superheroes with whom to celebrate Pride Month.
Rather than have this list be dominated by characters from the two mega-titans of spandex, DC and Marvel, here's a general overview of what each universe has to offer in the way of LGBTQ representation:
DC Extended Universe
For DC, the animated 'Harley Quinn' series features one of comics' most iconic lesbian relationships, finally done right on television. 'Doom Patrol,' featuring gay hero Negative Man, remains a surrealist masterpiece. Finally, there's 'Peacemaker,' which showrunner James Gunn and star John Cena reimagined as a bisexual antihero.

Marvel Cinematic Universe
The MCU has definitely been getting queerer in recent years. The underrated movie 'Eternals' showed an immortal hero living a quiet life with his husband and son. Cunning antihero Loki is canonically bisexual and genderfluid as well as the best time-travelling hero this side of 'Doctor Who' in the titular series. Then there's 'Agatha All Along,' which gave us the iconic line 'if you want a straight answer, ask a straight lady.'
'Miraculous' (2015)
The French animated series 'Miraculous,' about Parisian teens who use magical jewels to fight crime as costumed heroes, is both a cult hit and a fantastic example of queer representation. From the rainbow-powered character Wishmaker to the unrequited crush of Vesperia on main character Ladybug, the show manages to competently contain a full gamut of real-world queer experiences in an affirming way.

'Code Name: Dynastud' (2018)
Not everything needs to be family-friendly and inspirational. In this raunchy comedy directed by Richard Griffin, a radical right-wing government has outlawed homosexuality. Luckily, a farm boy with some unprintable superpowers is off to save the day with jokes and an intolerance for intolerance. This film is pure schlock, but as a combination of revenge fantasy and satire of toxic machismo, it's definitely a fun time.

'Surge of Power: The Stuff of Heroes' (2004)
The entire ' Surge of Power ' franchise is a gift to the genre of camp. Real-life corporate attorney Vincent J. Roth plays fictional corporate attorney Gavin Lucas, the alter-ego of openly gay superhero Surge, who battles both crime and homophobia. This was a groundbreaking indie film in 2004, made after the rebirth of the genre but long before the media juggernaut of the MCU. It would be 13 years before 'Power Rangers' would put the first queer hero on the big screen, but Roth kept making 'Surge of Power' sequels and pop culture crossovers with other franchises.

Disney Defends THUNDERBOLTS* Spoiler Reveal of THE NEW AVENGERS; Says Fans Actually Liked It — GeekTyrant
Marvel fans who hit theaters opening weekend for Thunderbolts* got the full payoff after months of speculation on what that sneaky little asterisk meant. It turns out, the team introduced in the movie is officially The New Avengers in the MCU, a reveal held back until the film's final scenes… only for Marvel to drop the twist in its marketing just a couple days later. As you know, that didn't sit well with a lot of fans. I saw so many complints about that. But, Disney believes that they made the right marketing move, and that fans actually liked it. Speaking with Empire, Ryan Stankevich, Disney's SVP of Marketing, addressed the controversy over the spoiler-heavy promotional materials that rolled out post-release: 'Discourse is a great part of the Marvel fan experience. For as many people who complained, we saw a large percentage say they thought it was really clever. Some people also complained we didn't do *The New Avengers with a 'z'! But we welcome healthy debate.' Yeah, I'd say the fans that already saw the movie where the ones that thought the marketing was clever because it didn't hurt their movie-going experience. The studio rebranded the movie as *The New Avengers on posters and promo assets shortly after Thunderbolts opened, a move that many saw as premature, especially considering Marvel's usual spoiler-free grace period on social channels. Fans who missed opening weekend understandably felt blindsided. In the film, the twist unfolds near the end after the Sentry situation spirals out of control, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine publicly spins her ragtag group of heroes, Yelena, Red Guardian, U.S. Agent, Bucky, Ghost, and Bob, into heroes by branding them the 'New Avengers.' It's a big PR move for her. The post-credits scene then reveals Sam Wilson is putting together his own real Avengers team… and he's not thrilled. A lot of Marvel fans hoping for a surprise in the theater got a Marvel-branded reminder… nothing's sacred when the marketing machine kicks in.

Preserving the craft of silk scarf making and uplifting communities continuing the tradition is important to Cheng and Wang. The 'Love is Love' silk bandana scarf comes in rainbow and blue and pink variants that can be tied around handbags, used as headbands or even as a sarong. The possibilities are endless with these 100% mulberry silk scarves, and they beautifully display watercolor hearts in the center of each. To continue the pipeline of ethical practices and transparency from start to finish, 100% of the proceeds from the scarf will go to Trans Lifeline. This nonprofit organization is a crisis hotline that offers emotional and financial support to the trans community. The highlight from this new collection is a Pride edition of Beekman's bestselling daily facial moisturizer. This version doesn't change anything about the formula, but it does redirect 100% of profits towards supporting at-risk LGBTQ+ youth via the Ali Forney Center. These are our favorite types of themed launches, because they back beloved products with special packaging while also helping to make a difference. It's the formulas she's grown up with and continues to use because of their long-lasting pigments, pretty colors and equally fun names. Consider your pride outfits covered Every time Saguin comes across this label at a thrift store, much like Betsey Johnson, her heart does a cartwheel. The designer fashion brand synonymous with the early aughts taps into whimsy, campy and playful clothing designs, and its latest Pride collection plays into that. Rather than simple rainbows emblazoned on every item, the pieces are individual bursts of colors that can be styled together for an altogether cheery look. Just think cherry-printed handbags and rhinestoned stilettos — plenty of outfit inspiration for parade outfits or going-out ensembles. Many looks were even modeled by RuPaul's Drag Race star, Gottmik. Plus, the brand is also giving back to charity. The baby blue hues and teals were clearly picked as a nod to his days in the Olympic pool, and the tasteful yellow adds a bit of depth and warmth to the pieces. Every cent of this line is going towards Rainbow Road, which is a non-profit that helps at-risk LGBTQIA+ folks around the world. They help people get to safety through financial assistance, providing aid in times of crisis and even relocating them to safer places. Reiss x Tom Daley Cotton Lover Vest The cheapest item in the collection happens to be our associate editor's favorite. It's one of those tanks that can be worn alone with cutoff shorts or underneath a cardigan when it gets chilly this fall.
