Miami Springs' baseball rides pitching and ‘small ball' approach to regional semifinals

Miami Herald23-04-2025

Miami Springs' baseball team has had seasons where powerful hitters have paved the way to success.
Big bats like Yasmani Grandal and current University of Alabama standout Jason Torres lifted the Golden Hawks to big wins in recent years.
This year, the formula for Springs is pitching and 'small ball.'
And it continues to work as the Golden Hawks did both very effectively this week to defeat iMater Prep by the score of 6-0 on consecutive days to secure a 2-0 series sweep of their Region 4-3A quarterfinal series at Shelly Dunkel Field.
Senior Kevin Roque tossed his latest gem on Tuesday in the second game, striking out a season-high 10 and allowing one hit over six innings to lead the Golden Hawks (22-3), who will host Miami Monsignor Pace starting Monday in a best-of-3 regional semifinal series at Miami Springs.
The first two games will be played Monday and Tuesday, each at 3:30 p.m. Should the series go to a third game, it will be played next Thursday at 7 at Monsignor Pace. It will be the first time the two teams meet since 2005.
The Spartans clinched their quarterfinal series on Tuesday night as well, routing Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons 14-2 in five innings following a 3-0 win on Monday.
The Golden Hawks are aiming to reach the state final four for the first time since 2019 and win their first state title in the sport.
Roque improved to 10-1 for the season with a 1.45 ERA, 66 strikeouts and 20 walks in 58 innings this season. He and Magdiel Estevez (6-1, 1.35 ERA), who tossed a two-hitter and struck out 10 on Monday, have formed a potent 1-2 punch at the top of Springs' rotation.
'It's been the story of our year with the pitching,' Miami Springs coach David Fanshawe said. 'We have two guys that can throw well and others that can contribute.'
The small ball came into play in the bottom of the fourth on Tuesday when Springs' Yordan Torres and Austin Argote each executed stellar bunts to load the bases after Darian Soto drew a walk to start the inning. iMater Prep starter Luis Hernandez, the son of former World Series MVP and Marlins pitcher Livan Hernandez who coaches the Knights, recovered with a strikeout and tagged out Soto at the plate when he tried to score on a wild pitch.
But then Justin Mercado snuck a ground ball past the second baseman and into right field scoring two runs. In the fifth inning, Oscar Hernandez executed another perfect sacrifice bunt, setting up an RBI single by Soto.
'When I saw those four runs scored, I was so relaxed and didn't worry about anything. It felt amazing,' Roque said. 'They're just playing baseball the way it's supposed to be played. I love their aggressiveness. I love this team with all my heart. We're confident and I know we're going for states this year.'

Key contract detail suggests Adam Nightingale will be with MSU hockey for long haul

Key contract detail suggests Adam Nightingale will be with MSU hockey for long haul Michigan State hockey head coach Adam Nightingale officially signed a new deal with the program on Friday, and there's a new detail in the contract that should help keep in East Lansing, Mich. for the long haul. Nightingale has experienced a ton of success in a short amount of time at Michigan State, winning the Big Ten regular season and conference tournament titles in back-to-back seasons, which resulted in No. 1 seeds in each of the last two NCAA Tournaments as well. That kind of success has resulted in some (including myself) worrying he may be a target for a NHL coaching position in the near future. Good news for Michigan State, though, is that his new contract extension (which is through 2030) has a greatly increased buyout should someone want to poach him away. Connor Earegood of The Detroit News posted on social media platform X on Friday that Nightingale's buyout over the next three years has more than doubled to $2 million. The buyout from there will drop but still a notable amount throughout most of his contract. You can see the exact numbers in Earegood's post below: This is the type of move from both Michigan State and Nightingale that shows he plans to be with the Spartans hockey program for a longtime. Which is really good news for Spartans everywhere. Michigan State will enter next season as a preseason top five team, with some already pegging them as the No. 1 team in way-too-early rankings. So, it's safe to say things are great for Michigan State hockey right now, and the news out of Friday only furthered those positive vibes for the Spartans. Giancarlo Stanton holds keys to making his Yankees return — but it likely won't be for Red Sox series

Try it free BOSTON — The ball is in Giancarlo Stanton's court. But it no longer sounds as if he could be in play for the Yankees this weekend. Advertisement Instead of joining the big league team at Fenway Park for its series against the Red Sox, Stanton was at Yankee Stadium on Friday, doing a light workout after playing three straight rehab games. The expectation is he likely will play in another rehab game Saturday at Double-A, which makes it unlikely he then would come to Boston to play in Sunday's day-game series finale. 3 Giancarlo Stanton is pictured before the Yankees' game against the Rangers on May 20. Jason Szenes for the NY Post 'I'm not necessarily expecting him to play this weekend, but stranger things have happened, too,' manager Aaron Boone said Friday afternoon. Advertisement Stanton has missed the first two and a half months of the season with tendinitis in both elbows, a condition he played through last year and has said he will have to manage even once he comes back this season. He appears to be in a spot where the pain is tolerable, and Boone said the DH has 'checked the boxes' with the training staff in terms of his running progression and all the swings he has taken in recent weeks. 3 Giancarlo Stanton is pictured during the Yankees' game against the Padres on May 6. Robert Sabo for the NY Post Advertisement 'The biggest say is probably Big G's now,' Boone said. Boone said he has been 'pleased' with what he has seen on video of Stanton's at-bats with Double-A Somerset, going 3-for-11 with a walk and three strikeouts. The results are negligible, but Boone has been looking for how Stanton has been reacting to pitches. Advertisement 'What's the quality of the pitch, what's the take look like, is he getting into a strong position, making a good move at the ball?' Boone said. 'Some of the at-bats I've seen, I feel like he's recognizing balls out of the zone and things like that. He looks strong to me when he lets it go. 'His at-bats look good. He's very detailed and particular about how he feels. He feels like his timing's pretty good right now, and he feels up to speed on the fastball and things like that. Definitely my sense in the little bit of communication I've had with him this week is that he feels like he's close.' Exactly how close remains something of a mystery, as the Yankees have remained nebulous on specifics with Stanton's timeline for a return all along. 3 Giancarlo Stanton hits a sacrifice fly during the Game 5 of the World Series against the Dodgers. Robert Sabo for the NY Post It seems to be more of a feel thing at this point — as in, Stanton will know it when he feels ready, but evidently, that has not happened yet. CHECK OUT THE LATEST MLB STANDINGS AND YANKEES STATS While the Yankees are being patient with Stanton — helped by the fact that their offense has performed well without him — they eagerly await his return. Advertisement 'Can't wait,' Aaron Judge said this week. 'Everybody in this room can't wait to see him. … He's a big part of this team. He means a lot on the field but also in this clubhouse. He's such a leader, such a mentor to a lot of the guys, especially the younger guys. It's going to be nice to get him back.' Once Stanton does return, the Yankees will have to figure out the looming playing time logjam. The 35-year-old is not expected to play every day, at least not early on as he settles into the groove of the season. Advertisement But the Yankees already have to sit one of Ben Rice, Trent Grisham, Jasson Domínguez, Cody Bellinger or Paul Goldschmidt on a daily basis, and soon two of them (adding Stanton into that group) will be out of the lineup on a given day as long as they all stay healthy. 'I've even talked with Big G a month ago, talking through scenarios and things like that,' Boone said. 'But we'll figure it out. … I think we'll have great buy-in from our guys. That team in there, especially where guys are in their career, they want to win. We'll try to put everyone in the best position to be successful and also try to keep everyone sharp and regular. Doesn't mean it's going to be perfect, but we'll do the best we can with it.'
