'Release the captain': Orlando Pirates fans unhappy with Xoki's contract extension
The 30-year-old defender has served as a regular captain for the team since joining the Buccaneers in 2022 from AmaZulu. While he had two strong seasons initially, some fans believe that injuries and limited playing time impacted Xoki's performance last season.
With Xoki and Olisah Ndah sidelined for much of the past season, Orlando Pirates had to rely on Nkosinathi Sibisi and two inexperienced defenders, Mbekezile Mbokazi and Thabiso Sesane.
Although Sesane was injured in February, his replacement, Mbokazi, performed impressively and even earned a cap for Bafana Bafana at just 19 years old.
Towards the end of the season, Xoki was called back into action but struggled in crucial matches. In the CAF Champions League semi-final, the 30-year-old was held responsible for Pirates' loss to Pyramids in the second leg. In June, it was reported that the former AmaZulu captain would extend his stay with Orlando Pirates, a decision that did not sit well with some fans.

Kaizer Chiefs player ratings: Who FIRED, who FLOPPED
Kaizer Chiefs suffered another pre-season defeat after going 3-2 to Asante Kotoko in a penalty shootout in the Toyota Cup. The pre-season match, played at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday afternoon, finished 0-0 after 90 minutes and penalties were needed to separate the two sides. Amakhosi were the better team overall but failed to take their chances. In the 82nd minute, captain Miguel Inacio missed a penalty after Mduduzi Shabalala was brought down in the penalty box. Who fired for Kaizer Chiefs? Thabo Cele 10/10 Cele orchestrated the midfield alongside Sibongiseni Mthethwa and was by far the best Amakhosi player on the field. He dictated the tempo of the game and allowed the team to play from the back, linking the defence and the midfield, thus forcing Asante Kotoko to starve for possession. Nkosingiphile Ngcobo 9/10 The young attacker has looked like a different player in the past few weeks. He was arguably Kaizer Chiefs' best player in the Netherlands and has now brought his form to South Africa. Ngcobo created space for himself in the midfield and often linked with Glody Lilepo and Mfundo Vilakazi. Flavio de Silva 8/10 The big striker impressed on Saturday after a difficult pre-season in the Netherlands. After failing to score in four matches, the 29-year-old striker has been heavily criticised, however, in front of Khosi fans, he created several chances and linked well with Lilepo and Ngcobo in the first half. Which Kaizer Chiefs players flopped? Miguel Inacio (4/10) The captain had a dreadful game on Saturday. Although he wasn't tested much, he missed two penalties. one during normal play and the other during the shootout. He made a few fouls and was often caught out of position. Lucky for him, the Asante attack was toothless. Wandile Duba (3/10) The young forward was introduced in the second half but failed to make an impact. He had a one-on-one situation but fired straight at the keeper. Duba has not looked lively for Kaizer Chiefs in a while and will likely start from the bench when the team plays their opening league game next month. According to Boitumelo Radiopane and Evidence Makgopa, the club's supporters should get excited over Nemtajela and Ndaba. Latest talk: Orlando Pirates and Relebohile Mofokeng move Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou trains his team at the Rand Stadium before the preseason camp in Marbella, Spain. Image: @orlandopirates/X 'For me, I think I have known almost all the players [from previously playing with them], but I think the one I only recently got to play with was Nemtanjela from Marumo Gallants,' said Radiopane via Radio 2000 . Orlando Pirates can replace Mofokeng says Vilakazi 'I recently got to play with him at the COASA FA Cup when we played in Bloemfontein. I think he is also a very good player. Very mobile, full of quality, but we will see. Makgopa added: 'The player that impressed me and I was not familiar with was Ndaba. Ndaba, from Richards Bay. That boy impressed me. He is kind of like Hotto. I was surprised, but most of the time I had seen him, but now I can see that okay…' Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1 Subscribe to The South African website's newsletters and follow us on WhatsApp, Facebook, X and Bluesky for the latest news.

Mamelodi Sundowns keep it simple while rivals roll the dice on change
Mamelodi Sundowns have gone into the last eight seasons of what is now the most dominant league era in the history of football in South Africa with questions constantly being asked about who will eventually topple them. And just like every other season, the upcoming one will not be any different. Despite a lot of movement from their rivals in the transfer market, Sundowns' relatively quiet incoming traffic may work in their favour. Last season was one of the few campaigns where they were run close, and despite a slow start to the season, their finish made a massive statement as they comfortably clinched their eighth consecutive title in the end. With their sights also set on domestic trophies and the CAF Champions League, it will be yet another season where it's tough for the chased to knock them off their pedestal. They will head into the season once again with their cards stacked nicely for them. Here we will unpack three key reasons why they will likely continue their dominance in the coming season. Minimal change from last season There has been a lot made of Orlando Pirates' many new arrivals, with a host of impressive signings making their way into the home of the former CAF Champions League winners. Despite the excitement and the expectation that comes with all those signings, there will also be a concerning factor in terms of how long it might take for all the new arrivals to gel. Add to that the presence of a new coach in Abdeslam Ouaddou, and it's clear Pirates may need time to hit top gear.
