Not just TCS: Q1 results destroy midcap IT's last standing heroes
ADVERTISEMENT The Q1 earnings season proved to be a tough one for mid-tier IT companies, with most reporting topline misses that sent investors scrambling for the exits. Having lost about 10% in a week, Persistent shares are in bear grip and down about 24% from peak. Coforge shares have also lost about 7% of its value in the last one week alone.
"Q1 results triggered a sharp stock correction for most of the mid-tier IT companies," said HSBC India's Yogesh Aggarwal. "Every company print was interesting, with some idiosyncratic take-away."
The grim reality: even companies posting what appeared to be decent numbers couldn't escape punishment. Mphasis "finally reported a sharp decline in its top logistic client" but somehow also delivered "strong growth and extremely strong deal wins".

Capital intensity is spiking across midcap IT as companies leverage their balance sheets to win fixed-price contracts. Coforge sits at the epicenter of this debate, with its free cash flow to revenue conversion averaging a mediocre 5% in recent quarters.
ADVERTISEMENT "Most companies are leveraging their balance sheets to offer better terms for fixed-price contracts," Aggarwal warned, highlighting how desperate the competition has become.The cash conversion crisis isn't isolated to Coforge. Persistent has seen similar increases in contract assets leading to weaker cash conversion, while even Mphasis reported the troubling trend in Q1.

Despite the carnage, some analysts are doubling down on beaten-down names. Jefferies upgraded Mphasis to BUY, arguing that "the key overhang in logistics vertical is behind" and raising their price target to Rs3,100 based on "an improving growth outlook."
ADVERTISEMENT For Coforge, Jefferies maintained its BUY rating with a raised price target of Rs2,030, expecting the company to deliver 23% EPS CAGR over FY26-28 despite current struggles.But Vinit Bolinjkar, Head of Research at Ventura Securities, struck a more cautious tone: "The Q1 FY26 earnings season proved challenging for midcap IT companies in India, despite initial investor preference for them over large-cap IT firms."
ADVERTISEMENT The pain isn't just domestic. Weak discretionary spending as clients in the US and Europe delay IT projects amid trade and inflation uncertainties is crushing revenue conversion. "Deal pipelines remained robust, their conversion into revenue was slow, particularly impacting sectors like manufacturing, auto, and consumer packaged goods," Bolinjkar explained.A notable trend this quarter was the role of cross-currency tailwinds, especially due to appreciation in currencies like the Euro and British Pound, which boosted reported USD revenue growth. 'However, this partly masked the underlying weakness in volume-led business. On the profitability front, operating margins came under pressure across most firms, driven by wage hikes, higher visa-related costs, and relatively soft topline growth. Despite this, some companies demonstrated effective cost control measures through higher utilization rates, reduced subcontracting, and disciplined hiring,' said noted Anil Rego, Founder & Fund Manager of Right Horizons PMS.The sector's elevated valuations are becoming impossible to justify without an earnings upgrade cycle. "The Nifty IT index, encompassing many midcap firms, had surged significantly, trading at a premium to its long-term average," Bolinjkar observed. "Without a clear earnings upgrade cycle, these elevated valuations appear difficult to justify."Even after recent corrections, some midcap IT stocks might still be considered stretched given the current growth outlook, a sobering assessment for investors who thought they'd found safety in the sector's supposed growth engines.'The outlook for midcap IT in the next few months appears mixed, with potential for continued pressure but also some pockets of resilience. Q1 FY26 results indicate a subdued start for the Indian IT sector, a trend likely to persist for midcap players. Most IT firms are maintaining cautious guidance, with largecaps like Infosys revising its FY26 revenue growth guidance to a modest 1-3%, reflecting a challenging demand environment. The lack of clear guidance from some large players further underscores this cautiousness for midcap players,' Bolinjkar said.However, most companies remain guarded in their short-term outlook but are optimistic about a recovery in H2FY26, as client budgets stabilize and deferred projects start ramping up.The sector appears to be in a consolidation phase, with performance divergence expected to continue across players, Rego sums it up.

Promoters sell Rs 55,000 crore worth of stocks in Q1, holding slumps to 8-year low
After selling stocks worth around Rs 54,732 crore in the June quarter, the share of private promoters fell to an 8-year low of 40.58% in Q1, according to a report. ADVERTISEMENT "The previous low was in quarter ending September 30, 2017 when the share of private promoters stood at 40.19 per cent. Over the last 13 quarters or 3 years alone, their share has fallen by a staggering 455 basis points from 45.13 per cent on March 31, 2022," PRIME Database said in a report. While Indian private promoters share has gone down from 36.86 per cent to 32.56 per cent, 'foreign' promoters' share has gone down from 8.28 per cent to 8.02 per cent during this period, it said. "While promoter buying is always a positive sign, promoter selling can be due to a wide variety of reasons such as promoters taking advantage of bullish markets to take money off the table, strategic reasons like debt reduction, legacy planning, philanthropy, investment in other ventures and meeting Minimum Public Shareholding (MPS) requirement as also for personal expenses," said Pranav Haldea, Managing Director, PRIME Database Group. ADVERTISEMENT According to Haldea, as long as promoters continue to hold sizeable stake after the sale, with the sale not happening at a huge discount to market price, and there being no significant change in the fundamentals of the company, there is no reason to the share of the Government (as promoter) increased to 9.39 per cent from 9.27 per cent during the quarter. ADVERTISEMENT After having overtaken foreign institutional investors (FIIs) in the March quarter, the share of Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) reached yet another all-time high of 17.82 per cent as on June 30, 2025, up from 17.62 per cent as on March 31, 2025, following a net investment of Rs 1.68 lakh crore during the quarter ending June 2025. The domestic Mutual Funds (MFs), flush with retail money coming through SIPs, continued to play a huge role in this with a net investment of Rs 1.17 lakh crore during the quarter, taking their share in companies listed on NSE also to yet another all-time high of 10.56 per cent as on June 30, 2025 (up from 10.35 per cent).The share of FIIs, on the other hand, declined further to a 13-year low of 17.04 per cent from 17.22 per cent during the quarter, despite a net inflow of INR 38,674 crore (inflow of Rs 29,793 in secondary market and inflow of Rs 8,881crore in primary market). ADVERTISEMENT The share of retail & HNI investors increased marginally to 7.53 per cent and 2.05 per cent respectively as on June 30, 2025 from 7.51 per cent and 1.98 per cent as on March 31, 2025. As such, the combined retail and HNI share increased to 9.58 per cent from 9.49 per cent during the quarter despite being net sellers to the tune of INR 21,132 crore during the quarter, presumably due to profit booking to make use of the market rally. Using credit card to buy property in Dubai lands may land you in trouble: Report
Several Indians are finding themselves in a tricky spot after using their credit cards to buy property in Dubai, reported The Economic Times. What seemed like an easy way is leading to legal and tax problems back home. Some homebuyers either checked the payment links shared by Dubai-based builders or swiped credit cards when they were visiting Dubai. They found it hassle-free without any paperwork and no visits to the bank. And they believed they could circumvent paying 20 percent tax collected at source (TCS) on overseas remittances. But what is unknown is that credit cards, even international ones, are meant only for current account transactions, such as hotel bookings, movies, or buying books, not for capital account transactions, such as buying an asset. While no law bans the use of credit cards for buying assets abroad, experts believe that it violates the RBI's guidelines. Now worried over the Income Tax crackdown or the Enforcement Directorate, some of these buyers are rushing to fix their mistake. They are now remitting money properly under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) and asking developers to cancel the earlier credit card payments. Once the new payment is made through the right banking channels, the builder refunds the earlier amount. As per the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) rules, an Indian resident can send up to $250,000 a year overseas for buying assets or for personal use under the LRS. However, the payment must route through proper banking channels, and the individual must have held an account with the bank for a minimum of one year before remittance for capital account transactions. A credit card, when used to pay for property, does not count under LRS and is considered a violation.
