Coimbatore police recover 68.6 lakh from cyber fraudsters in seven months

Time of India03-08-2025
Coimbatore: The district cybercrime police have recovered Rs68.61 lakh from online financial fraudsters in connection with 20 cases in the past seven months.
"We have frozen Rs93 lakh in various accounts that the city residents lost to cyber fraudsters from January 1 to July 31 this year.
Out of that, Rs68.61 lakh was recovered and handed over to the victims," a police officer said.
He said they had a dedicated team to identify the bank accounts used by online scamsters to receive money from their victims. "The team requests banks to freeze such accounts. After verifying transactions, banks transfer the amount to respective courts. The recovered money is then handed over to the victims in the form of demand drafts or online transactions."
Pointing out that online financial crimes were on the rise in the city, the officer said they had arrested five cyber fraudsters since January this year and remanded them in judicial custody. "Reporting cyber scams to police immediately after the occurrence is important in initiating the recovery procedure."
He said the cases related to online gambling and loan app scams have decreased in recent times. "However, the number of people losing their hard-earned money to online investment and digital arrest scams is still on the rise. We are creating awareness among people to curtail such online scams."

Haryana identifies 91 bank branches with ‘mule accounts': 26 of them in Gurgaon, 24 in Nuh

Chandigarh: Haryana Police have identified 91 bank branches across the state where suspected "mule accounts" are being operated by cybercriminals for large-scale fraudulent transactions. Of these, 26 branches are in Gurgaon and 24 in Nuh district. Special teams of the cybercrime wing are conducting examinations of the records to ensure negligence or deliberate collusion of bank staff are not facilitating cybercriminals. The teams are scrutinising lapses in KYC compliance, procedural violations in account opening, the role of bank employees, and any signs of negligence. Continuing the drive, raids were conducted in districts of Karnal and Yamunanagar on Wednesday. In Yamunanagar, investigations revealed that a firm having a current account, officially shut down in March 2025, carried out transactions worth Rs 43 lakh. Nationwide, eight complaints were registered against this firm. Another current account was found to be opened on a fake address, and transactions worth Rs 2 crore made in just three months. The account has 33 complaints filed against it across the country. Haryana director general of police Shatrujeet Kapoor said a robust and multi-pronged strategy has been devised to clamp down on cybercrime. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo This includes strict monitoring of bank branches, rapid analysis of suspicious transactions, regular raids, and ensuring adherence to banking regulations. He emphasised that protecting citizens' hard-earned money from falling into the trap of cybercriminals is a top priority. He stressed that banks hold equal responsibility alongside police, and therefore, personal accountability of bank officials and cyber nodal officers is being fixed. Shibas Kabiraj, inspector general, cyber, appealed to citizens to remain cautious and aware to protect themselves from cyber fraud. Cybercriminals often pose as bank officials, police officers, govt agencies, or representatives of reputed companies to make fraudulent calls, send suspicious links, or trick people into downloading fake apps. In such situations, citizens must never share their OTP, ATM PIN, UPI PIN, passwords, or personal documents like Aadhaar and PAN, nor scan any unknown link or QR code. Youth tricked by fake job offer in Russia dies of ‘stress'

Pudukottai: A 24-year-old youth from Pudukottai, who was allegedly duped by a Tirunelveli-based agent with the promise of a job in Russia, died at a lodge in Delhi on Aug 13. The family owed his death to the severe mental distress he was in after waiting in vain for three months to fly abroad. The victim, G Rajapandi of Andavarayapuram in Alangudi taluk, had approached job consultant Vadivel Pillai in Tirunelveli hoping to secure employment in Russia. His father, a fisherman, said that the agent collected ₹2.03 lakh from them in instalments since Oct 2024. "The agent assured that Rajapandi would be sent abroad within three months," Rajapandi's brother Ravi Varman said. A petition submitted by the family to the district collector said Rajapandi was first taken to Chennai and then to Delhi in May and made to stay in a private lodge in Vasant Kunj after repeated cancellation of his flight tickets, citing visa issues. The family said he spent over ₹60,000 on accommodation until Aug, while the agent kept delaying his travel. When Rajapandi pressed for a refund, the agent allegedly returned only ₹18,000 in small amounts through online transfers. Struggling under debt after pawning his mother's jewellery and borrowing from neighbours, the youth was under immense mental pressure, Ravi said. On Aug 13, Rajapandi was found dead at his lodge in Delhi. CCTV footage shows him suddenly collapsing while trying to open the door. His body was brought to Chennai after post-mortem. While doctors in Delhi have indicated a possible cardiac arrest, the family does not accept it, and are awaiting the final post-mortem report for clarity. Along with their petition, the family also submitted WhatsApp voice messages in which Rajapandi is heard lamenting to his friends that Vadivel Pillai had cheated him. The family has urged the authorities to initiate action against the agent on charges of cheating and abetment of suicide. The police have sent the bodies for postmortem and informed their families. The accident caused a 1km-long traffic jam on both sides of the road for about 2 hours. The ASP said the damaged vehicles have been removed from the road, and traffic has been restored to normal while the injured was undergoing treatment at a hospital.
