'I don't know how I'll survive,' says taxi driver caught touting at KLIA

SEPANG: A taxi driver nabbed for touting at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) pleaded with the Road Transport Department (RTD) for compassion, citing financial hardship and stiff competition from e-hailing services.
The 55-year-old man from Seri Kembangan said he was struggling to get passengers and often made less than RM100 a day.
"It's hard to make a living outside these days as most users no longer flag down taxis. I can't even earn RM100 a day, and that makes it difficult to cover my daily expenses," he told enforcement officials following the RTD's Ops Ulat at KLIA.
The taxi driver said he usually made two to three trips a day, earning between RM150 and RM300 depending on customer agreements, but had to pay RM60 daily for taxi rental.
The operation was joined by Transport Ministry secretary-general Datuk Jana Santhiran Muniayan; RTD senior director of legal enforcement Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan; Selangor RTD director Azrin Borhan; and his deputy, Datuk Ahmad Kamarunzaman Mehat.
The driver also said he had been arrested four times previously and had borrowed about RM12,000 to pay off summonses and retrieve his vehicle from RTD custody.
"I returned to touting at KLIA because this is a lucrative spot where it's easy to get passengers.
"I'm pleading with RTD not to seize vehicle because it's a rental taxi from a company. If they take it, I don't know how I'll survive," he said.
Meanwhile, Muhammad Kifli said taxi drivers at KLIA Terminals 1 and 2 must use authorised apps to pick up passengers. Those who fail to do so and are caught will be considered touts.
Kifli said offenders often used rented public vehicles, which further complicates matters.
RTD will also apply for the forfeiture of any vehicle used in touting activities under Section 227 of the Land Public Transport Act 2010 (APAD 2010).
"This forfeiture action is necessary to curb touting. If we only impose fines, they will pay whatever amount is ordered and return to their illegal activities," he said.
From January to mid-June this year, RTD seized 10 public transport vehicles and handled 69 cases involving private cars used for touting.

University student claims trial to sexually assaulting cousin

KLANG: A university student pleaded guilty at the Sessions Court today to sexually assaulting his cousin sister on three occasions in 2023 and earlier this year. The accused, 19, made his admission after three charges were read out to him before judge Siti Aminah Ghazali. The court, however, set Aug 20 for submission of a social report from the Welfare Department and sentencing. The charges read that the accused, the eldest of four siblings, had sexually assaulted the girl, who was then aged 8 and 9, in a house in Sungai Buloh. He committed the offences once in September 2023 and twice in March this year. The youth, who self-mitigated as he does not have legal representation, pleaded for leniency as he is a young offender. "This is my first offence and I have been remanded for a month. "During that period, I reflected on my actions and now I am remorseful and repentant. "My father is supporting my three siblings, who are still studying, and I. I ask for a minimal bail," he said. Each charge framed under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offence Against Children Act carries a maximum 20-year jail term and whipping upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Nur 'Ayuni Jamri did not offer bail, describing the offences as serious. "The victim has familial times with the accused. "However, if the court allows bail, I ask it to be set at RM15,000 with one surety and he or his representative must be barred from harassing prosecution witnesses," she said.

Lorry driver gets 10 years in jail, 20 strokes for raping 11-year-old daughter

KLANG: A lorry driver who raped his own daughter was slapped with a ten-year jail term and ordered to be whipped 20 times after he pleaded guilty to the two charges levelled against him. Sessions Court judge Siti Aminah Ghazali also ordered the 37-year-old man to undergo counselling and police supervision for two years after completing his sentence. According to the charge sheet, the father of two, had raped his daughter, who is currently 11-years-old, once in November last year and again in May this year at the family home in Meru near here. The accused, who was unrepresented, pleaded for leniency as he had a wife and two children to support. 'I regret what I had done and swear not to do it again," said the man, who according to the facts of the case, had raped his daughter, on both occasions, when his wife was not home. DPP Nurul Jannah Aimi sought a heavy penalty because the accused had committed a serious crime in the wake of an increase in sexual violence cases against children in Selangor. 'The accused, as the father, had the obligation to care for and raise the victim, but had instead betrayed her with his disgraceful conduct," she said, adding the victim would be traumatised all her life over what had happened. In the same court, a 19-year-old public university student also pleaded guilty to sexually violating his cousin. The youth was slapped with three charges for sexually abusing the presently eight-year-old child once in 2023 and twice this year. In the first charge, the eldest child of four siblings was accused of performing cunnilingus on the child in a house at Sungai Buloh in March this year. In the second charge, he was accused of touching the girl's private parts in the same premise the following day after he had performed oral sex on her. In the third charge, the youth had allegedly placed his penis on the girl's vagina at the same house in September 2023. He was charged under Section 14 of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which comes with a prison term of up to 20 years and whipping, for all three offences. DPP Nur Ayuni Jamri did not offer any bail, citing the gravity of the case but asked for RM15,000 with one surety if the court decided to grant the accused bail. She also wanted the court to order the youth or his representatives not to contact the prosecution's witnesses. In pleading for a lower bail amount, the youth, who was unrepresented, said he had self-reflected during the almost one month he was under remand and regretted his conduct. 'I am remorseful about what I have done and this is my first offence. 'I have three siblings, and my father is the sole breadwinner. 'I plead for the bail amount to be lowered," said the accused. Siti Aminah set Aug 20 for sentencing as well as submission of a report by the Social Welfare Department, as the accused was still young. Apart from the two accused, at least four other men were charged for various sexual offences against children in the same court.
