REVIEW: Rod Stewart brings out Rock 'n' Roll legends at Glastonbury

Yahoo15 hours ago

THE one and only Rod Stewart just brought out Rock 'N' Roll legends on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury 2025.
Sir Rod Stewart occupied the Legends slot today (Sunday, June 29) - and many people, including myself, weren't expecting to see Mick Hucknell, Ronnie Wood, and Lulu, as they were jokingly mentioned by Rod halfway through his Glastonbury set. More on this later.

The rockstar, now 80, had plenty of surprises up his sleeve, and it's clear to see where his £300,000+ budget has gone.
Kicking off the set with 'Tonight I'm Yours', Sir Rod Stewart came onto the Pyramid strutting his stuff in a black and gold suit supported by six backing singers, who nearly stole the show.
Jimmy the saxophone player was also a massive hit during this set, with Rod letting him take the floor on centre stage multiple times, and the crowd loved it. Jimmy was my personal favourite of the whole show, along with a certain guitar player.

The knighted rockstar then played several of his classics, including 'Some Guys Have All The Luck', 'Love Train', and 'The First Cut Is The Deepest' - with the latter getting a lot of love.
I was expecting Rod not to be 100%, especially with news of his illness in recent months. I'm not a massive fan of the guy, and he's also a bit before my time, but I was more than surprised with his Glastonbury set.
Rod was constantly moving from side to side, trying to make the most of his 1 hour 30-minute slot. I particularly found it funny how he would finish a song and then shout, 'NEXT', hilarious.
Rod continued to roll through his 20th-century classics, which included 'Forever Young', 'You Wear It Well', and 'Wake Up Maggie'. The musician was loving it out there.
The green and red flares were out for Rod when he started singing 'If You Want My Body', which Rod played after he paid tribute to musician Christine McVie, who died aged 79, back in 2022.
This song had everyone bouncing, even with the scorching sun, and I have to say - it's my favourite Rod Stewart track.
Then the Glastonbury crowd roared as Rod Stewart announced the co-creator of the Glastonbury Festival, Sir Michael Eavis, to the stage. This was insane to experience live, and Michael got lots of love, deservedly.
Before Sir Michael came on, we got a rendition of Patti Labelle's 'Hey Sister, Soul Sister'. It was great to see the cappella from the backing singers, and they also impressed with a cover of 'Rolling On a River'.
It was great to see Rod then bring out Mick Hucknell, Ronnie Wood, and Lulu. I particularly enjoyed Rod performing 'Hot Legs' with Lulu. The pair had great on-stage chemistry.
Ronnie was really well-received. He hasn't lost it since his prime Rolling Stones days. Would love to see him bring the Rolling Stones to Glastonbury Festival 2027.
I thought that all three guest appearances were great, but I'm not going to lie, I was a little let down.
I know that the style of music wouldn't have matched up too well with Rod, but I would have loved to have seen Robbie Williams perform alongside him today - they could have made it work for sure.
No political remarks from Rod during the whole set, which I thought was quite unexpected given what we've seen at Glastonbury this year.
Aged just 24, I'm not exactly Rod's target audience, but I know Rod and I know his classics, which are great tunes, but my question for you is - would you be annoyed if Sir Rod Stewart headlined last night instead of Neil Young? I know my answer. What a performance. 9/10.

Oasis star Noel Gallagher slams Glastonbury as 'woke' and 'virtue signalling'

Oasis' Noel Gallagher slammed Glastonbury as "woke" in a podcast interview before this year's festival got underway. In the interview the musician called the festival at Worthy Farm "kind of preachy and a bit virtue-signalling". Historically, Glastonbury has supported left-wing political causes for more than fifty years, including when the Oasis guitarist appeared there with Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds in 2022, the Express reports. READ MORE: Glastonbury fans blast Sir Rod Stewart for 'disrespect' after message to festival founder READ MORE: Glastonbury fans make same complaint moments into Neil Young's headline set Join the Manchester Evening News WhatsApp group HERE But his regular attendance there didn't stop Gallagher from hitting out at Glastonbury. He told podcaster Matt Morgan: "It's getting a bit woke now, that place, and a bit kind of preachy and a bit virtue-signalling. "I don't like it in music - little f**king idiots waving flags around and making political statements and bands taking the stage and saying, 'Hey guys, isn't war terrible, yeah? Let's all boo war. F**k the Tories man,' and all that. It's like, look – play your f**king tunes and get off." He added: "Donate all your money to the cause – that's it, stop yapping about it" The musician went on to say he doesn't think that drawing attention to politics at Glastonbury makes any difference. He said: "Let's just say, for instance, the world is in a bit of a f**ked up place … what's all the kids in a field at Glastonbury going to do about it? "Everybody knows what's going on in the f**king world, you've got a phone in your pocket that tells you anyway. "What is the point of virtue-signalling?' Gallagher's comments were made before this year's Glastonbury festival got underway, but have resurfaced after some acts made political statements onstage. These included punk duo Bob Vylan who led a chant of "death, death to the IDF" at the West Holts Stage in their set on Saturday, which have been condemned by Glastonbury and are reportedly being investigated by police. Irish rap group also led chants of "f*** Keir Starmer" during their performance. Glastonbury has sought to distance itself from the artists' comments, saying in a statement: "With almost 4,000 performances at Glastonbury 2025, there will inevitably be artists and speakers appearing on our stages whose views we do not share, and a performer's presence here should never be seen as a tacit endorsement of their opinions and beliefs." "However, we are appalled by the statements made from the West Holts stage by Bob Vylan yesterday. Their chants very much crossed a line and we are urgently reminding everyone involved in the production of the Festival that there is no place at Glastonbury for antisemitism, hate speech or incitement to violence."

'I said what I said': Bob Vylan rapper doubles down on Glastonbury anti-Israel tirade and says he's been 'inundated with messages of support and hatred'

Bobby Vylan, one half of the punk rap duo Bob Vylan, has spoken out about his Glastonbury chants after his 'death to the IDF' was condemned as 'appalling'. The pair's performance on Saturday, which was streamed live on iPlayer, has led to the launch of a police investigation, as well as an apology from the festival organisers and the BBC. Bobby Vylan led crowds at the West Holts Stage in a controversial chant of 'death, death to the IDF' (Israel Defence Forces) referencing the conflict in Gaza. Festival organiser Emily Eavis said the anti-IDF chants 'very much crossed a line,' while adding there is no place at Glastonbury 'for antisemitism, hate speech or incitement to violence.' Bob Vylan formed in Ipswich in 2017 and their music style is a mix of punk, rap and hard rock. The pair have chosen not to reveal their real names to protect their privacy and go by the monikers Bobby Vylan and Bobbie Vylan. Following the performance, Bobby Vylan issued a statement on Instagram, saying he had been 'inundated with messages of both support and hatred'. Despite his 'phone buzzing non stop,' the rapper asserted that he stood by his comments as he called for a 'change in foreign policy.' He captioned the statement with 'I said what I said.' Performer @BobbyVylan caused outrage at Glastonbury by shouting "death, death to the IDF", complained he was forced to 'work for f*cking zionists" & led a chorus of the arguably genocidal "From the river to the sea Palestine must be, will be, free." It was broadcast by the BBC… — David Atherton (@DaveAtherton20) June 29, 2025 His full statement read: 'As I lay in bed this morning, my phone buzzing non stop, inundated with messages of both support and hatred, I listen to my daughter typing out loud as she fills out a school survey asking for her feedback on the current state of her school dinners. 'She expressed that she would like healthier meals, more options and dishes inspired by other parts of the world. 'Listening to her voice her opinions on a matter that she cares about and affects her daily, reminds me that we may not be doomed after all. 'Teaching our children to speak up for the change they want and need is the only way that we make this world a better place. 'As we grow older and our fire possibly starts to dim under the suffocation of adult life and all its responsibilities, it is incredibly important that we encourage and inspire future generations to pick up the torch that was passed to us. Let us display to them loudly and visibly the right thing to do when we want and need change. 'Let them see us marching in the streets, campaigning on ground level, organising online and shouting about it on any and every stage that we are offered. 'Today it is a change in school dinners, tomorrow it is a change in foreign policy.' Sir Keir Starmer has demanded an explanation from the BBC, as he accused the corporation of airing 'hate speech' following Bob Vylan's performance. The footage has since been removed by the BBC and remains under investigation. The PM said: 'There is no excuse for this kind of appalling hate speech. I said that Kneecap should not be given a platform and that goes for any other performers making threats or inciting violence. The BBC needs to explain how these scenes came to be broadcast.' The pressure on the BBC showed no sign of relenting on Monday as Skills minister Baroness Jacqui Smith - a former home secretary- stressed that the BBC had 'questions to answer'. She said she absolutely believed Bobby Vylan's actions amounted to 'incitement to violence'. While Shadow home secretary Chris Philp said Bob Vylan was 'inciting violence and hatred' and should be arrested and prosecuted. Hip Hop trio Kneecap are also being investigated by police over politically-charged chants made during their set, to determine if any offences were committed. Naoise Ó Cairealláin, who performs under the name Moglai Bap, said they would 'start a riot outside the courts', referencing fellow bandmate Liam Og O hAnnaidh who has been charged under the Terrorism Act for allegedly displaying a Hezbollah flag and chanting pro-Hamas slogans during a gig in London. Ó Cairealláin later clarified: 'No riots just love and support, and support for Palestine'. Avon and Somerset Police said video evidence would be assessed by officers 'to determine whether any offences may have been committed that would require a criminal investigation'. On social media, the Israeli Embassy said it was 'deeply disturbed by the inflammatory and hateful rhetoric expressed on stage at the Glastonbury Festival'.
