Tunnel project row: BJP MP Tejasvi Surya challenges Dy CM Shivakumar to public debate
Tejasvi Surya claimed that the project only helps elite car owners and won't reduce the traffic jams in Bengaluru.
Responding to the attacks by Surya, Karnataka Congress had stated on its social media handle X, "This isn't about political credit. It's about 'Brand Bengaluru', a city that needs the state and Centre to work together. We welcome public audits, technical scrutiny, and open debate. But don't stall progress by labelling every transformative project as wasteful. Citizens deserve efficient execution, not polarised discourse."
Surya refering to this, stated on Thursday, "If you truly welcome technical scrutiny and public debate on this tunnel road project, I propose an open discussion with Dy CM Shivakumar who is spearheading this project. Let the time and place be of your choosing."
"It will definitely be beneficial to discuss the merits and demerits in a healthy way. Am waiting to hear back from you. Thanks," he said.
"When we oppose Bengaluru's tunnel road project, some cite Singapore as a model. But even Singapore scrapped similar mega tunnel plans after realising they were costly, unsustainable and ineffective at decongestion. Don't cherry-pick examples. Learn from Singapore's correction too," Surya stated.
He further asked Dy CM Shivakumar, "Why should we repeat mistakes others have walked away from?"
"BJP will strongly oppose the tunnel road project, which is nothing but a loot of public money under the guise of development," the Bengaluru South MP claimed.
"This 18-km tunnel road project for Bengaluru, costing Rs 18,500 crore, is planned exclusively for cars from Hebbal to Dairy Circle. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) and feasibility report are riddled with inconsistencies and irregularities," Surya claimed.
According to the report, the tunnel can carry 600–1,600 people per hour and if bikes and two-wheelers are allowed, it could handle about 7,500 people per hour. However, as of now, the plan allows no access for buses, autos or two-wheelers.
The BJP MP has raised objections to the project stating that if a Metro were built instead, it could carry 25,000 people per hour.
'Do we want a project that helps only car owners or a metro project that benefits 25,000 people per hour?' Surya asked.
The Deputy Chief Minister himself said a toll would be levied on the tunnel. The DPR mentions one way toll fee of Rs 660. 'How many people in Bengaluru can afford to pay Rs 660 daily to commute?' he asked.
'This is a tunnel for the millionaires of Sadashivanagar, Dollar's Colony, and 4th Block Koramangala. It seems tailor-made to help D.K. Shivakumar and his close relatives travel to their homes in Koramangala,' Surya alleged.
Surya stated, 'BJP opposes the tunnel road project. We will fight to ensure that every single rupee of the people is protected.'

Corporators accuse CMC mayor of stalling devpt works
1 2 Cuttack: Chaos ensued during the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) meeting on Wednesday as corporators from BJP and other parties created an uproar, accusing mayor Subhash Chandra Singh of stalling development projects in various wards and bypassing council norms. Tensions soared when BJD corporator Mohammed Iftekhar Alam of ward 18 accused the mayor of delaying essential development work in his area. "It's been more than three and a half years since I took the initiative to propose and push forward multiple development projects in my area. These included vital infrastructure like roads, a community health centre, anganwadi buildings, paver block installations and several other essential public works. Not a single project has materialised on the ground. The files are moving, promises are being made, but people continue to suffer due to inaction and neglect," alleged Alam. BJP corporator Gopal Behera of ward 45 alleged irregularities in the allotment of a petrol pump. "They have sanctioned a petrol pump in ward 50 without the mandatory approval of the CMC council. This act seems highly irregular and points to a possible mala fide intention by the mayor and his close associates," Behera claimed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Japanese AI invention allows you to speak 68 languages instantly. "Development should not be dictated by politics. We are here to serve our people, not to dance to the tunes of favouritism," he said. Corporators staged a sit-in in the council hall, blocking the mayor's podium. Several sat on the floor, shouting slogans of corruption and "undue favouritism", disrupting proceedings for hours. Mayor Singh refuted all charges. "All proposals are being reviewed as per rules and priority. No irregularity has occurred, and I welcome an official inquiry if anyone has doubts," he said. "Some corporators want to politicise the session. I will never let it happen. I am working for the people and will work till my last breath," added Singh.

Probe Agency Restitutes Rs 380-Crore Assets In Bank 'Fraud' Involving Ex-MLA
New Delhi: Attached assets worth Rs 380 crore have been restored to a designated Maharashtra government authority for distribution to the about 5 lakh "duped" depositors of a cooperative bank, controlled by a former MLA, as part of a money laundering proceeding, the Enforcement Directorate said on Wednesday. The case pertains to the Karnala Nagari Sahakari Bank Ltd. in Panvel where it was alleged that its erstwhile chairman, Vivekanand Shankar Patil, in connivance with other officials of the bank, "cheated" the lender and "siphoned off" the funds for private investments. Patil, a four-time MLA of the Shetkari Kamgar Paksha Party, was arrested by the ED in June 2021. The money laundering case of the ED stems from a February 2020 FIR filed by the Pune Police Economic Offences Wing (EOW). The police alleged in its chargesheet that the then chairman Patil and other officials of the bank prepared 63 "bogus" loan accounts using "forged" documents without following the RBI guidelines and standard banking norms, and "siphoned off" Rs 560 crore for personal gains, the federal probe agency said in a statement. The ED said its probe found that funds were "diverted" to various entities "controlled" by Patil and his relatives. "He (Patil) purchased various properties and assets using the funds siphoned off from the bank and these proceeds of crime were utilised for the purchase of immovable properties at different locations in Raigad district of Maharashtra," it said. These assets, worth Rs 386 crore, were attached by the ED under two provisional orders issued in 2021 and 2023. The ED also filed a chargesheet in August 2021 before a special PMLA court in Mumbai. The ED said the liquidator appointed by the RBI for the bank filed an application, under section 8(8) of the PMLA, before the court seeking restitution of assets. The ED gave its consent, the agency said. The court issued an order on July 22 directing the release of the property -- Karnala Sports Academy at Panvel -- to the liquidator and to put it up for auction, the ED said. The court also ordered the Competent Authority (Maharashtra Protection of Interest of Depositors) to "realise" the land at Posari, Raigad by auction for distribution amongst the depositors. "The bank had more than 5 lakh depositors having total deposits of Rs 553 crore, and they lost their hard-earned money. "In the larger interest of depositors and currently ongoing restitution efforts, ED took steps to expedite the process resulting in the restitution," the agency said. The PMLA provides for the process of restitution even before completion of the court trial in order to provide succour to the victims of frauds like bank loans and Ponzi scheme cheating. The fraud came to light after an audit was done at the instance of the Reserve Bank of India during 2019-20, when it was found that Patil was siphoning off funds from the bank through 67 "fictitious" loan accounts. The funds were sent to the loan accounts of entities/firms/trusts owned or controlled by Patil including Karnala Charitable Trust, Karnala Sports Academy and Karnala Mahila Readymade Garments Cooperative Society Limited, the agency had claimed in a statement issued in October 2023.

Maharashtra Government To Cancel Fake Birth Certificates Of Bangladeshi Migrants
Mumbai: The Maharashtra government will cancel the fake birth certificates issued to Bangladeshi nationals living illegally in the state by August 15, Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule said on Wednesday. As many as 42,000 such cases have been found but the actual number is greater, and it will be ascertained by the officials, he told reporters here. "By August 15, fake birth certificates given to Bangladeshis will be cancelled," the BJP leader said, adding that the copies of such certificates will have to be sent to the Department of Revenue and the Department of Health. Earlier, BJP leader and former MP Kirit Somaiya had alleged that 3,997 birth certificates had been issued to Bangladeshis on the basis of forged documents, leading to the state government suspending two officials previously posted in Malegaon in Nashik district. On Tuesday, Bawankule held a meeting with the state chief secretary, which was attended by district collectors via video conference. Somaiya too attended the meeting, sources said. Minister of State for Home Yogesh Kadam had stated in March that in the last four years, the government has been cracking down on illegal Bangladeshi residents as never before. In 2021, 109 Bangladeshis residing illegally in the state were deported, followed by 77 in 2022 and 127 in 2023. In 2024, as many as 716 illegal Bangladeshi residents were arrested and 202 deported, he stated.
