16 arrested as police bust cyber gang minting Rs 1cr per month

Lucknow: What looked like an ordinary flat on Kursi Road turned out to be the hub of a hi-tech cyber syndicate duping unsuspecting people through illegal online betting games, minting over Rs 1 crore in just 30 days.
The gang, involving people primarily from Chhattisgarh and Gujarat, was busted by the eastern zone crime team and Gudamba police with the arrest of 16 people, on Wednesday.
Police received a tip-off about suspicious activities by young men with multiple mobile devices and laptops. A crack team swooped in and nabbed 16 members of the gang. The team seized Rs 1.07 crore cash stacked in bundles, along with 79 ATM cards, 22 passbooks, 13 cheque books, 54 mobile phones, three laptops, and two note-counting machines.
The accused were identified as Pramod Sahu (25), Sajid Ansari (24), Khemendra Sahu (23), Sohail Ashraf Khan (28), Tikesh Kumar Yadav (23), Sachin Kumar Gupta (24), Abhay Mishra (22), Ansh Sharma (21), Shankar Bag (22), Vinayak Chauhan (24), Mohan Singh (29), and Vijay Sahni (23), all from Chhattisgarh, and Rakesh Kumar (50), Rakesh Prahlad Patel (50), Govindbhai Mangaldas Prajapati (50), and Govindbhai (31) from Gujarat.
"Their network is spread across India, and their turnover in a single month crossed Rs 1 crore," a senior police officer said.
DCP, east zone, Shashank Singh, said that the gang operated under the guise of online betting platforms, offering flashy games promising quick money.
"Unsuspecting players deposited money, believing they could win big, but the funds were diverted to fake, rented bank accounts created using forged documents," said Singh.
"To evade detection, the gang withdrew cash almost immediately via ATMs, converting digital traces into hard currency. The money was then funnelled to kingpins running illegal betting platforms, with every member of the gang pocketing a cut," the DCP said, adding that the masterminds could be operating from Dubai.
Police said specific roles were assigned to members for account creation, fund transfers, cash withdrawal, and coordination with betting app operators.
"The mobile numbers recovered from the flat indicate that the arrested men were part of a larger network. The CID Cyber Cell and IT experts have been roped in to trace the servers and digital footprints," an officer said.

A police constable-turned-builder accused of duping his own department's Bharatha scheme and multiple banks to the tune of Rs. 2.61 crore was arrested by the Wanaparthy police on Tuesday. The 37-year-old accused Bandaru Rakesh, who joined back to duty after a long leave of nearly nine years, fabricated documents to secure multiple loans from three houses, Wanaparthy Superintendent of Police Ravula Giridhar said at a press conference. He got selected as Armed Reserve constable in 2007 and got converted his service into Civil a couple of years later. Using the connection while serving as a civil constable, he entered real estate business and created his own venture of houses. He first sold one of the houses in his venture to his aide Sunkari Shekhar. He created fake documents stating that he had purchased the house from Shekhar and availed home loan from police department's Bhadratha scheme. 'Using the same details, he fabricated documents and secured home loans from Indian Overseas Bank, HDFC and LIC,' the SP said. With this modus operandi, he collected Rs. 89 lakh in the form of multiple bank loans. In the same fashion, he availed multiple home loans from different banks. The accused spent most of the money he had earned for his lavish lifestyle and ended up behind the bars, Mr. Giridhar said.

Fact Check: These sadhus were NOT attacked for hiding cameras in a temple changing room
A video of a mob attacking a group of Hindu holy men is making the rounds on social media. Those sharing the clip claimed that in Ghaziabad, devotees found a camera planted by temple caretaker (mahant) Mukesh Goswami in a women's changing room there. Locals and the police subsequently beat up sadhus from the temple. Sharing the clip on X, one person wrote, 'The biggest news of the day. In Muradnagar, Ganga Nahar of Ghaziabad district, Uttar Pradesh, a camera was found in the changing room outside a temple, and its live feed was on Mahant Mukesh Goswami's mobile. Videos of women changing clothes were found on Mahant's mobile. We found that a similar incident occurred in Ghaziabad in May 2024. Toddler's gold pendant snatched at temple
Bhopal: A miscreant snatched a gold pendant from a two-year-old girl at Gufa Mandir in Koh-e-Fiza on Monday. Koh-e-Fiza police registered a case on charges of snatching against the unidentified accused based on a complaint filed by the child's mother. According to Koh-e-Fiza police, the complainant, Pinky Kachhwaye, 25, a homemaker residing in Ram Nagar, behind the Old Court in Shahjahanabad, went to visit Gufa Mandir with her husband Vishal and their two-year-old daughter on Monday. Around 6 pm, as the family reached the temple's entrance, a youth wearing a black T-shirt approached and swiftly snatched the toddler's gold pendant before fleeing the spot. The stolen gold pendant is valued at approximately Rs 7,000. Pinky reported the incident at the Koh-e-Fiza police station. A case of snatching was registered against the unidentified accused, and the police launched a search operation to trace him.
