Grafton preview, best bets, inside mail for Sunday, July 13, 2025
Headlining the South Grafton Cup (1600m) is last start Listed Civic Stakes winner Headley Grange along with Listed Tatt's Mile runner-up Sibaaq and Big Dance runner-up Vivy Air.
'It has ended up a bit stronger race than I thought but the Big Eligibility gets them there but you have to be in it to win it,' Singleton said.
'He is down in the weights and has drawn well so we will see how we go.'
Fiorsum Fred has 54kg while Headley Grange has top weight of 62kg, Sibaaq has 61kg and Vivy Air has 59kg
The four-year-old drew barrier 5 but moved in one gate with the early scratching of Uzziah while those three rivals have drawn out on barriers 10, 8 and 13 respectively.

'It's a good draw for him because he's got enough speed to be handy so hopefully he will be just behind them with cover,' said Singleton.
'He will need the favourites to have a bit of luck go against them but he can bob up on his day and I wouldn't completely rule him out of it.'
Fiorsum Fred is no stranger to Grafton after finishing runner-up to Rapt in the Guineas last year.
The son of Fiorente heads back this weekend in better shape than his form may appear according to Singleton.
'That should have been a '1' next to his name last start at Tamworth,' he said.
'He just never got a clear crack at them at all in the straight and went to the line full of running.
'I would take him if he wasn't in really good order.'
Joining Fiorsum Fred on the trip from Scone is Beyond My Ken in the Class 1 Handicap (1006m) and Another Peach in the Maiden Plate (1410m).
Beyond My Ken showed good ability with a debut win from Manuscript and Fingers Hunter at Scone in March last year before a last to Linebacker in the Group 3 Baillieu at Rosehill.
Hen then placed third at Muswellbrook in his only run last spring before returning with two seventh placings at Scone.
'His form doesn't read as good as this horse is,' Singleton said.
'Since his first start when he won, everything has gone wrong.
'He pulled up lame at his next start at Rosehill and has had issue after issue since then.
'I've finally got him in the shape he was when he won on debut.
'He's finally drawn a good barrier too.
'I'm going there pretty confident that he is ready to do something. He's the one I'm most confident about.'
Another Peach showed handy ability in her first campaign with placings in three of her four starts.
She returned this preparation with a neck second to Kobold at Mudgee on July 6.
'It was a really sticky track and she just couldn't get away from them at the top of the straight,' said Singleton.
'Had it been a little bit drier, she probably wins but she stuck to her task well though.
'She pulled up unbelievably well and I'm confident she has come on a little bit which will have her right in the mix.
'While she has drawn out a little, the fact that her main dangers have drawn wider gives her a chance to roll across while they are covering a bit of ground which may be the difference in the end.'

Nick Daicos set for Brownlow push, question American AFL star keeps getting asked
Collingwood big man Mason Cox says he's unsure if he'll remain in Australia when his AFL career wraps up, while praising Nick Daicos as the consummate professional. The Magpies are flying high on top of the ladder and will be hoping the Round 18 loss to Gold Coast, where they went goalless in the first half, was just a blip in the road to the premiership. FOX FOOTY, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every match of every round in the 2025 Toyota AFL Premiership Season LIVE in 4K, with no ad-breaks during play. New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited-time offer. Cox's legacy as an AFL success story is secure after he made his debut on Anzac Day in 2016, tore apart the 2018 preliminary final against Richmond and became a premiership player in 2023. Collingwood face some tough list calls this off-season over their experienced group of 10 veterans aged over 30, most of which are out of contract. They are Scott Pendlebury, Steele Sidebottom, Jeremy Howe, Jack Crisp, Brody Mihocek, Will Hoskin-Elliott, Tim Membrey, Jamie Elliott, Tom Mitchell and Cox. All of those players have had their moments in the black and white, but there will be an unlucky few who aren't offered new deals at Collingwood. Speaking to in his capacity as a Toyota ambassador, Cox chuckled when asked about his plans for life after football. 'I get a lot of these questions as a recent,' the 34-year-old from Texas said. 'I do I think I'll end up just kind of sussing out, I guess opportunities like I do want to stay here (in Australia) long term, but like with anything once footy finishes up hopefully in a few years time it's not so much transferable job to other industries. 'So we'll kind of see what s pans out what opportunities come up and hopefully there's something I can be extremely passionate about and be able to sink my teeth into it. If that's here in Australia, then so be it.' Cox has played seven games so far this season but has fallen out of the AFL team with the emergence of ruckman Darcy Cameron's and Dan McStay's return from injury. 'I'll keep doing everything with my power to try to put my hand up,' the 211cm ruck-forward said. 'Hopefully that opportunity comes soon, but it'sa sign that the club's in a good position. 'There's plenty of talent coming through and I guess a healthy list at the same time.' One young Collingwood star is Nick Daicos, who is the favourite for the Brownlow Medal heading into the home stretch of the season. The 22-year-old has shortened with the bookies ahead of Adelaide's Jordan Dawson, Geelong recruit Bailey Smith and Gold Coast Suns captain Noah Anderson. 'He's just a constant professional,' Cox said of Daicos. 'He's obviously got a spotlight on him every single week and he's still gathering Brownlow votes even with someone hanging off his shoulder the whole game. So it's a credit to him. 'He is one of those players that comes in super mature, got into the leadership group this year, which is pretty impressive at that age. 'He's really going to be I think the face of this club for a long time. As an older player kind of looking at what he's been able to do in such a short time, it's pretty impressive to be able to stand next to him. 'At one point I'll probably be telling people I played with Nick Daicos and have a bit of a laugh about it. 'It's a credit to him. Having his brother and dad there has helped him kind of feel comfortable and be able to grow and become one of the leaders of the clubs so quickly, which is impressive.' Collingwood are aiming to win their third premiership this century and create more iconic grand final moments on the way. Heath Shaw's smother on Nick Riewoldt in the 2010 grand final replay has been recreated by Shaw and comedians Ryan Shelton and Matt Okine as part of Toyota's Legendary Moments, which you can watch in the video above. 'I actually had never heard of AFL when it ever happened. I didn't actually start AFL until 2014. But it's definitely lived on in folklore,' Cox said. 'I's one of those moments where it's not something you really can teach. It's just purely a gutsy move to, to be able to make that effort. It's a credit film. It was kind of what AFL is all about really is just kind of maximum effort, having the maximum impact.' The return of Toyota's Legendary Moments coincides with Toyota's Good for Footy Program, which supports clubs across the country with initiatives such as the Good for Footy Raffle. Toyota's Good for Footy Raffle helps local football clubs across Australia raise much-needed funds with all proceeds going directly to community clubs to support junior development, facilities, and the future of the game. Toyota is also running the Toyota Good For Footy Raffle, which is a fundraiser aimed at helping grassroots footy clubs. 'It's a good way for clubs to essentially raise money. Toyota has put $250,000 for grabs through raffles. You can put through on club and 100 per cent of the profits from the raffle go to the club itself. So it's a great way to of raise money for local football clubs.' 'A lot of American sport is quite professional now to the point where there's not as much accessibility for the fans to be able to talk and interact with the players,' Cox added. 'So it's pretty cool in that sense with AFL.'

Brisbane Lions midfielder Hugh McCluggage continues to add ‘layers' to his game
Brisbane Lions star Hugh McCluggage is showing no signs of slowing down as he approaches his 200th AFL appearance, saying he is constantly evolving as a player as he adds 'layers' to his game. Still only 27, McCluggage – who chalks up his double century of top-flight games on Friday night against the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba – is arguably in career-best form in his ninth season of AFL football. 'As an inside midfielder, I've been able to have a good balance of contested work and uncontested work and (been) trying to add different layers to my game every year,' the Warrnambool product said. '(It has been) a bit of defensive stuff this year that I've worked on alongside Josh Dunkley and Lachie (Neale), and the other mids, and I'm always trying to improve. 'That's what keeps me motivated to keep playing for as long as I can. 'I've been pretty lucky being able to play a lot of games in a row since I debuted (in April 2017 against St Kilda).' Including his debut game, McCluggage has played in 199 of Brisbane's past 204 matches. 'I've only missed a handful, so it's a testament to all the hard work but also the work of everyone else around the club to help get me to this milestone, and hopefully there's plenty more to come,' he said. However, only nine of McCluggage's first 40 appearances ended up wins for Brisbane, as the Lions struggled in his first two seasons at the club. Other players in his situation might have asked for a trade to a Victorian club, which would have given him the chance to not only return home but also potentially taste more success. But McCluggage had no intention of turning his back on his Brisbane teammates and Chris Fagan, who remains the only head coach he has played under at AFL level. 'I could see that it was a really tight group. We had some really good leaders here already that probably just hadn't had the opportunity to play in the good side, so I was really keen to help guys like 'Zorks' (Dayne Zorko) and 'Frog' (Ryan Lester) play in some finals,' he said. 'Helping those guys achieve what they deserved was one of the motivating factors, and then also how close I was with guys like Jarrod Berry, Cam Rayner, Zac Bailey, 'Zorks', 'Frog', Dizz (Darcy Gardiner), Harris (Andrews) … the list goes on. 'They helped us when we first got here, we became really close, we've learned a lot of lessons along the way, and I think if you achieve success with people that you've gone through the ups and downs with, there's nothing that can compare to that. 'Probably in our wildest dreams we couldn't imagine we'd do what we've done in terms of the consistency that we've been able to play at, and winning a premiership as well is pretty special.' McCluggage also paid tribute to 'father figure' Fagan. 'In all the ups and the downs, he's been there the whole time. He wraps an arm around you when he when he realises that you need it, but he also is someone that can challenge you, and he's always wanted to help me grow in that way,' he said of the man who guided Brisbane to last season's flag. 'I couldn't imagine having anyone else as a coach because I've had him the whole time, and I've just really enjoyed working with him day in, day out.'
