Grafton preview, best bets, inside mail for Sunday, July 13, 2025

Trainer Scott Singleton was a little surprised when he saw the field for the South Grafton Cup but an inside draw for Fiorsum Fred give him hope the gelding can run a cheeky race. Headlining the South Grafton Cup (1600m) is last start Listed Civic Stakes winner Headley Grange along with Listed Tatt's Mile runner-up Sibaaq and Big Dance runner-up Vivy Air. 'It has ended up a bit stronger race than I thought but the Big Eligibility gets them there but you have to be in it to win it,' Singleton said. 'He is down in the weights and has drawn well so we will see how we go.' Fiorsum Fred has 54kg while Headley Grange has top weight of 62kg, Sibaaq has 61kg and Vivy Air has 59kg The four-year-old drew barrier 5 but moved in one gate with the early scratching of Uzziah while those three rivals have drawn out on barriers 10, 8 and 13 respectively. The Form: Complete NSW Racing thoroughbred form, including video replays and all you need to know about every horse, jockey and trainer. Find a winner here! 'It's a good draw for him because he's got enough speed to be handy so hopefully he will be just behind them with cover,' said Singleton. 'He will need the favourites to have a bit of luck go against them but he can bob up on his day and I wouldn't completely rule him out of it.' Fiorsum Fred is no stranger to Grafton after finishing runner-up to Rapt in the Guineas last year. The son of Fiorente heads back this weekend in better shape than his form may appear according to Singleton. 'That should have been a '1' next to his name last start at Tamworth,' he said. 'He just never got a clear crack at them at all in the straight and went to the line full of running. 'I would take him if he wasn't in really good order.' Joining Fiorsum Fred on the trip from Scone is Beyond My Ken in the Class 1 Handicap (1006m) and Another Peach in the Maiden Plate (1410m). Beyond My Ken showed good ability with a debut win from Manuscript and Fingers Hunter at Scone in March last year before a last to Linebacker in the Group 3 Baillieu at Rosehill. Hen then placed third at Muswellbrook in his only run last spring before returning with two seventh placings at Scone. 'His form doesn't read as good as this horse is,' Singleton said. 'Since his first start when he won, everything has gone wrong. 'He pulled up lame at his next start at Rosehill and has had issue after issue since then. 'I've finally got him in the shape he was when he won on debut. 'He's finally drawn a good barrier too. 'I'm going there pretty confident that he is ready to do something. He's the one I'm most confident about.' Another Peach showed handy ability in her first campaign with placings in three of her four starts. She returned this preparation with a neck second to Kobold at Mudgee on July 6. 'It was a really sticky track and she just couldn't get away from them at the top of the straight,' said Singleton. 'Had it been a little bit drier, she probably wins but she stuck to her task well though. 'She pulled up unbelievably well and I'm confident she has come on a little bit which will have her right in the mix. 'While she has drawn out a little, the fact that her main dangers have drawn wider gives her a chance to roll across while they are covering a bit of ground which may be the difference in the end.' Singleton stable set for Lovely trip away to Narromine

A trip away and return to the flying short course are set to pay dividends for a tough Scone filly at today's Narromine meeting. And punters have seemingly been given a decisive leg-up from the Scott Singleton stable, with front-running Too Darn Lovely by-passing a home meeting on the same day to zero in on a weaker target in the central west. Dropping back from a higher-graded race at Muswellbrook over 1000m three weeks ago when she faded after leading, Too Darn Lovely reloads in a Benchmark 58 Handicap over the 800m scamper course on a tighter and more advantageous track for on-speed sprinters. The start before in a better BM 58 at Quirindi (1000m), Too Darn Lovely ran a quick time in beating a handy sprint field. She again draws to control the race under regular apprentice Leeshelle Small, and back on her preferred firmer ground, looks set to take her strike rate to five wins from 14 starts. A speedy daughter of fashionable sire Too Darn Hot, Too Darn Lovely could be aimed at a more challenging provincial sprint, or even a Saturday Highway if she takes care of this moderate field. While Singleton has accepted for seven runners at the Scone meeting, Thor's Lightning, second-up in a Maiden Plate over 1300m, is his only other runner at Narromine. The meeting, though, is set to be dominated by Dubbo stables. Loading The Clint Lundholm yard, among its better chances, will run exciting debutant filly Miss Rapide in a Maiden Plate over 800m, along with resuming My Boy Scout in a Maiden Handicap (1100m), and promising filly Matilda Of Tuscany shooting for back-to-back wins after a dominant Maiden breakthrough at Warren.

Scone preview: It Stays In Vegas can kickstart another big day for Scott Singleton

Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News. Local trainer Scott Singleton will again be a force at Scone's first meeting since their annual Cup day/stand-alone carnival where he posted his 400th career win and won the Group 3 Dark Jewel Classic. Singleton is represented by three of his string on Tuesday starting with the lightly-raced three-year-old It Stays In Vegas who tackles the Arrowfield Country Boosted Maiden Plate (1000m). The son of one-time Arrowfield resident stallion Shalaa resumed in the coveted Red Crown at Muswellbrook on June 1 but proved no match for the long odds-on winner, Raging Force. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'I was happy enough for him to run second to that horse there but I was disappointed that he couldn't,'' Singleton said. 'I thought he was just a little bit plain but admittedly, he was first-up and he had to sit outside the leader. 'And it was a funny track that day, it was really gluey and a lot of horses didn't like it so I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt that those couple of things might have played against him. 'I think he is a better horse than he went the other day so I am wanting to see him bounce back and do something there on Tuesday.' It Stays In Vegas is a third generation Australian thoroughbred but does indeed have some American blood and via the likes of two epic stallions, one of them an immortal. His third dam was a daughter of Seeking The Gold while her fourth was by Seattle Slew, who this week 48 years ago, completed the US Triple Crown by winning the Belmont Stakes. Singleton, meanwhile, has the honour and distinction of saddling up one of the shortest-priced favourites racing at Scone on Tuesday in Ritzsun ($1.85) in the third race on the eight-event program. Ritzsun has been a model of consistency throughout his nine starts, winning twice (both of them at Scone) together with four placings, three of them seconds. The son of Rosebud winner Sebring Sun's most recent performance was a brave and determined on-pace second in the 1200m TAB Highway conducted at Gosford on the Gold Cup and The Coast day. His Tuesday assignment is the Scone CWA Centenary Benchmark 82 Handicap (1000m). 'Up in grade but down in weight,'' Singleton said. 'He's in an 82 there but he is only carrying 55(kg) so from a good draw and the way he has been working, I would be expecting him to win to be honest.' Ritzsun has already contested three Highways inside his nine starts and win, lose or draw on Tuesday, there will be a fourth somewhere down the road. 'That would be the plan,'' Singleton said. 'He has only won the two (races) so he can win again and still go to a Highway. 'He is definitely good enough to win a Highway if all the stars align.' Singleton is naturally eager for the well-bred mare Insightful Award to post her fourth win in the Darley Country Boosted Benchmark 58 Handicap (1300m) having placed at two of her last three 'away' runs. 'I am hoping that given when she won at Scone earlier in the prep, she bolted in, and that was down to the home-track and she can repeat that because it sort of came from nowhere,'' Singleton said. 'But she has remained in good order. 'She a little bit keen the other day at Warren but she certainly seems in good shape and she'll run well.'
