EVs to drive lithium-ion battery demand growth by remarkable 48% CAGR through 2030: Report
The demand for lithium-ion battery is expected to reach 115 GWh by 2030 with consumer electronics growth projected at 3 per cent, stationary storage at 14 per cent, and EVs at a remarkable 48 per cent CAGR between now and 2030.
As per the report, this growth will also be supported by India's commitments to Net-Zero goals and favorable government policies on catalysing demand for low-carbon energy, cell manufacturing, and end-of-life (EoL) management of lithium-ion batteries.
On the flip side, with rise in this demand, India also faces challenges such as a rising import bill and environmental impact due to disposal of end-of-life lithium-ion batteries.
'India currently lacks Li-ion cell pack manufacturing capabilities and mining infrastructure, making it heavily reliant on imports of LiBs consisting of critical battery-active materials such as Lithium, Cobalt, Nickel, and Manganese,' the ICEA report read.
The projected cumulative demand for the period 2024 to 2030 for these critical active materials is estimated to reach more than 250kT, translating into an import exposure of more than USD 5 billion.
To address these challenges, the government has introduced various policy interventions, such as the Critical Minerals Mission, trade duty exemptions on critical minerals, among others.
Further, CPCB introduced the Battery Waste Management Rules (BWMR) in 2022, establishing a regulatory framework to foster recycling and retention of critical battery-active materials within India.
Nearly 39 per cent of consumer electronics batteries that have reached their end-of-life do not get collected.
At COP26 held in 2021, India committed to an ambitious five-part 'Panchamrit' pledge. They included reaching 500 GW of non-fossil electricity capacity, generating half of all energy requirements from renewables, and reducing emissions by 1 billion tonnes by 2030.
India as a whole also aims to reduce the emissions intensity of GDP by 45 per cent. Finally, India commits to net-zero emissions by 2070. (ANI)

British Open schedule on Saturday to be adjusted because of loyalist parade
Tee times in Saturday's third round of the British Open (The Open) will be brought forward in an effort to reduce the potential for disruption while an annual loyalist parade takes place the same day in Portrush. Some 77 bands, and an estimated 2,000 people from the Portrush Sons of Ulster organisation, are expected to march through the town in Northern Ireland that is hosting golf's oldest major championship. The parade is scheduled to start at 8.30 pm local time — around the same time that thousands of spectators might be leaving the property at Royal Portrush following the third round of the Open Championship. Amid the potential for logistical issues, the R&A which organises the British Open, is adjusting its schedule for Saturday. 'We've worked really collaboratively with the organisers and across multiple agency groups to ensure primarily that both events can run as seamlessly as possible,' R&A chief executive Mark Darbon said on Wednesday. 'We're making a slight tweak to tee times to try and finish — it's not dramatic. It'll be 15 minutes or so earlier,' he added. More than 275,000 spectators are expected to attend the Open across this week. ALSO READ | The Open 2025: Dates, course history, players, prize money & more The Belfast Telegraph reported last week the Portrush Sons of Ulster group was offered 20,000 pounds (USD 27,000) by the R&A to postpone the parade, and that the offer was rejected. When that was put to Darbon, he said the R&A was making contributions to support 'the seamless operation of both events.' 'We try and be good citizens in the communities in which we operate when we come to town,' he said. Darbon said he had no extra security concerns around Saturday evening, adding the safety of spectators was 'always a prime consideration.' Price hikes It's a big week for Portrush and its local businesses — and it appears some have been attempting to take full advantage. The prices of meals at some of the town's popular restaurants shot up, leading to criticism and complaints from visitors, The Guardian newspaper reported. According to the paper, the price of a burger at Ramore Wine Bar rose from 7.95 pounds (USD 10.65) to 17.95 pounds (USD 24). The Ramore Restaurant Group, which owns that bar and others, including the well-known Harbour Bar, attributed the price hikes to extra staff being needed for a busy Open week, but said menus have been 'revised and adjusted' in the wake of the complaints.

India 2, Pakistan 3, Bangladesh 2… what is this list in which no country wants to come on top
Seven of the World's 10 Worst Power Outages Belong to India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh dominate an unfortunate list that is the top 10 largest power outages in the world. Out of these ten, seven are from these three South Asian nations. India tops the list, and there's no close competition. Let's look at the complete list and what it means. India In Power Outage List India is currently the fastest-growing major economy in the world. It is expected to overtake Japan soon. In economic terms, comparing India to Pakistan and Bangladesh is now seen as irrelevant. However, when it comes to massive power failures, these three nations remain grouped together. World's Largest Power Outage The world's biggest-ever power outage is recorded in the Guinness World Records and the record belongs to India. On July 30–31, 2012, a massive power failure impacted a significant portion of the country. Due to the collapse of 3 out of 5 national power grids, 20 out of 29 states went dark, affecting an estimated 620 million people. Train services were halted mid-route, cities were plunged into darkness, and the entire northern power grid was paralyzed — all in an effort to avoid accidents during the blackout. Who Else Is on the List? 2 – Pakistan (January 23, 2023): A national grid failure caused a blackout across Pakistan, affecting around 230 million people. 3 – India (Date unspecified): A technical fault at a substation in Uttar Pradesh caused the northern grid to collapse, impacting nearly 230 million people for 12 hours. Business losses were estimated at around Rs 567 crore (approx. USD 68 million). 4 – Bangladesh (November 1, 2014): A widespread power failure affected 150 million people. 5 – Bangladesh (October 4, 2022): Another massive blackout impacted 140 million people. 6 – Pakistan (January 26, 2015): A major power outage left 140 million in darkness. 7 – Indonesia (August 4–5, 2019): A blackout affected 120 million people. 8 – Indonesia (August 18, 2005): A power outage impacted 100 million people.
