Prince Mohammed bin Fahd Passes Away, Key Figure in Eastern Saudi Development
Prince Mohammed, the fourth governor of the Eastern Province, oversaw a period of significant development in the region, coinciding with the country's economic boom.
Born in 1950 in Riyadh, he received his early education at the Model Capital Institute before earning a bachelor's degree in economics and political science from the University of California, Santa Barbara. His government career began as assistant deputy interior minister before his appointment as Eastern Province governor in 1985.
Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province, home to the kingdom's oil, gas, petrochemical, and manufacturing industries, witnessed extensive development under Prince Mohammed bin Fahd's tenure. The region saw major advancements in industrial and tourism sectors, infrastructure, and essential services.
Key projects included the expansion of export hubs into some of the Gulf's largest ports, major road and electricity initiatives, and the establishment of industrial cities. The province also experienced significant urban growth and an expansion of healthcare services.
Prince Mohammed bin Fahd launched numerous initiatives to promote social development, with a focus on youth empowerment and women's advancement. His Prince Mohammed bin Fahd Program for Youth Development received the Dubai-United Nations International Award for Best Practices in Improving the Living Environment in 2002 and the Sharjah Award for Voluntary Work in 2007.
He also established several awards to foster excellence and innovation, including the Prince Mohammed bin Fahd Award for Distinguished Government Performance and the Prince Mohammed bin Fahd Award for Academic Excellence. Additionally, he founded Prince Mohammed bin Fahd University, a higher education institution known for its advanced teaching methods and modern technology.

Dubai's Burj Khalifa turns white and green to mark Pakistan Independence Day
ISLAMABAD: Dubai's iconic Burj Khalifa lit up with Pakistan's national flag on Thursday evening as the South Asian country marked its 79th Independence Day. Pakistan achieved independence from British colonial rule on Aug. 14, 1947, after the British partitioned the Sub-continent into two independent dominions, Muslim Pakistan and Hindu-majority India. On Thursday, the Pakistani embassy in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) shared on X a video of the world's tallest skyscraper turning green and white. 'Dubai's iconic Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building, illuminated with the Pakistani flag on 14 August 2025 to mark Pakistan's Independence Day,' the embassy wrote on X. The UAE is Pakistan's third-largest trading partner after China and the US. The Gulf state is also Pakistan's second-largest source of foreign remittances, after Saudi Arabia, with over 1.8 million Pakistani expatriates living and working there. Separately, Pakistan's Consulate General in Dubai also hosted a flag-hoisting today to mark the 78th anniversary of Pakistan's independence, with a large number of Pakistani community members attending the event. Pakistan's Consul General Hussain Muhammad warmly welcomed the community members and urged them to continue playing a constructive role in the development of both the UAE and Pakistan, according to the consulate. Earlier this week, thousands of people attended Pakistan's Independence Day celebrations at the Dubai Exhibition Center. The event, titled 'Emirates Loves Pakistan,' was organized in collaboration with the Pakistan Association Dubai (PAD) and supported by Dubai Police, and featured a colorful mix of music, dance, art, cuisine and community spirit.

Dubai hosts world's largest Pakistan Independence Day gathering, embassy says
ISLAMABAD: About 60,000 people attended Pakistan's Independence Day celebration at the Dubai Expo City, making it the largest such gathering in the world, the embassy of Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates said on Thursday. Expressing gratitude to the UAE government, envoy Faisal Niaz Tirmizi acknowledged their support in making this year's Pakistan Independence Day celebrations 'unprecedented in scale.' 'The event, held on 10 August in Dubai Expo City attended by around 60,000 people, was the largest Pakistan Independence Day gathering held anywhere in the world,' the embassy said in a statement. Tirmizi also underscored the contributions of the Pakistani community in the UAE, underscoring their importance to Pakistan's economy at a time of fiscal reform and external account pressures. 'The Pakistani diaspora has played a vital role in the development of the UAE and has been a backbone of our economy through their remittances,' Tirmizi said, urging expatriates to continue their constructive role in the country's progress. As part of the celebrations, the embassy announced the launch of an online tracking system for passports and National Identity Cards for Overseas Pakistanis (NICOP), aimed at improving consular services. Tirmizi also pointed to improvements in education, saying two community schools had achieved a 'Good' ranking for the first time in 20 years, and that more Pakistani private schools had been approached to expand branches in the Emirates.

Record sales, rents signal new growth cycle in UAE office market
RIYADH: Office market activity in the UAE surged in the first half of 2025, with Dubai's high-value transactions jumping 207 percent and Abu Dhabi's leasing demand more than doubling, according to Knight Frank. Dubai recorded 83 office sales worth over 10 million dirhams ($2.7 million) each, up from 27 in the same period last year. In Abu Dhabi, office requirements topped 50,000 sq. meters — a 110 percent year-on-year increase — as corporate expansions drove demand. Analysts attributed the growth to strong global occupier confidence, buoyed by rising activity in business services, technology, real estate, and consulting, coupled with near-full Grade A occupancy in both cities. Faisal Durrani, partner – head of research, MENA at Knight Frank, said: 'Confidence in Dubai as a global business hub remains exceptionally strong. Indeed, this is reflected in record low vacancy rates for Grade A stock across the city, which stands in sharp contrast to many other global gateway cities.' He added: 'The technology and trading systems sector has emerged as major driver of demand, while sustained activity from financial, real estate and business consulting firms underscores the city's appeal to a diverse range of global occupiers.' Dubai leads Downtown Dubai led the city's office sales in the first half of 2025, with average prices topping 5,000 dirhams per sq. foot — far ahead of other submarkets. Business Bay ranked second, breaking the 2,000-dirham mark for the first time after posting 21.2 percent growth since 2020. Off-plan sales gained traction, particularly in Business Bay, where 1.3 million sq. feet of office space is under development, reflecting strong investor confidence. In leasing, the Dubai International Financial Centre remained the priciest location for fitted offices at 400 dirhams per sq. foot, while Dubai Design District, The Greens, and Business Bay also saw solid rental gains. Business services drove 38 percent of demand, followed by technology (31 percent), real estate (12 percent), and banking and finance (10 percent). Knight Frank expects 15.8 million sq. feet of new supply by 2030, pushing total stock to nearly 137.8 million sq. feet. 'The confidence in the office sector is further evidenced by the boom in high-value transactions, with the number of office sales over 10 million dirhams setting a record of 83 sales in the first half of 2025,' Durrani added. Abu Dhabi market In Abu Dhabi, business services led office demand in the first half of 2025 with a 32 percent share, followed by government entities at 9 percent. Grade-A occupancy hit record highs, driving rents higher in prime locations. 'New rental contracts in Abu Dhabi have been a primary driver of market activity this year, with transaction volumes experiencing a significant peak in January, signaling fresh demand and business expansion in the UAE capital,' said Durrani. Musaffah recorded the strongest rental growth in the second quarter, up 68 percent, followed by Al Bateen at 64 percent and Al Hisn at 18 percent. Older districts such as Al Danah and Al Nahyan posted slight declines due to a higher share of secondary stock. The pipeline includes Aldar's HB Tower on Yas Island (22,171 sq. meters) and the Saas Business Tower on Al Reem Island (12,004 sq. meters), both Grade A developments aimed at meeting evolving occupier needs.
