Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Thursday accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party ( BJP ) of "stealing" the rights of Bahujans either through the removal of their names from the voter list or by "disappearing" forest rights titles of Adivasis (Tribals)."Kagaz mitao, Adhikaar churao - the BJP has made this a new weapon for the oppression of Bahujans. On one hand, they remove the names of Dalits and backward classes from the voter list, and on the other, they make the forest rights titles of tribals 'disappear,'" Gandhi, who is the Leader of Opposition (LoP) Lok Sabha, posted on X.Referring to a news report published by an English daily, Gandhi flagged the issue of "missing" forest rights titles in government records in Chhattisgarh . He said that over half of the total forest rights titles have been "made" to vanish in the Rajnandgaon district."In Chhattisgarh's Bastar (2,788) and Rajnandgaon (more than half), the records of thousands of forest rights titles have been suddenly made to vanish," Gandhi said."The Congress enacted the Forest Rights Act to protect the water, forest, and land of Tribals - the BJP is weakening it and snatching their primary rights," he added.Calling Tribals as "first owners" of the country, Gandhi emphasised Congress' resolve to protect their rights. "We will protect their rights at all costs," he said.The Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006, also called the Forest Rights Act (FRA), deals with the recognition of various rights for forest dwellers, including Scheduled Tribes (STs) and other traditional communities.Under section 3 of the Bare Act, the Forest Dwelling Scheduled Tribes (FDST) and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (OTFD) have been granted legal rights for ownership and use of forest land and resources.The Forest Rights Act has many names, including Tribal Act or Tribal Rights Act, apart from its official title. It was enacted to correct the historical wrongs that occurred during colonial rule, where Adivasis and other traditional forest-dwelling communities were criminalised by law for using forest resources.

Nagpur: Revenue minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule has attacked the Congress over their allegations regarding voter lists. "The upcoming local self govt elections in the next few months will be held on the same voter lists on which the assembly elections were conducted. Therefore, if Congress leaders have any objections, they should raise them with the Election Commission right now. Nagpur: Recalling former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee 's trademark wit, BJP city president and ex-mayor Dayashankar Tiwari on Sunday narrated how the veteran leader turned even electoral defeat into humour during his 61st birthday celebration in Nagpur. Speaking at the launch of 'Retirement', a book by city cardiologist Dr Kirti Tanna, Tiwari said that after Vajpayee lost the 1985 Lok Sabha election from Gwalior in the aftermath of Indira Gandhi's assassination, he was invited to Nagpur for his 61st birthday. INDIA Bloc Leaders Likely To Discuss Joint Veep Candidate Today
New Delhi: The opposition INDIA bloc leaders are likely to discuss their joint candidate for the post of vice-president at a meeting of floor leaders on Monday morning. Sources said the INDIA bloc leaders would meet at the office of Mallikarjun Kharge, the leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha, at 10.15 am on Monday. The meeting will be held a day after the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) announced Maharashtra Governor C P Radhakrishnan as its nominee for the post of vice-president, the second-highest constitution position in the country. Radhakrishnan hails from Tamil Nadu, which will go to polls in 2026. While the ruling BJP feels that the nomination of Radhakrishnan, a seasoned BJP leader with an RSS background, will elicit support from the wider opposition, especially the ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu, it remains to be seen what stand the opposition parties take on Monday. BJP president J P Nadda, while announcing the nomination of Radhakrishnan after a meeting of the party's parliamentary board on Sunday, said the NDA will speak to the opposition parties to reach a consensus for the vice-presidential election. The Congress-led INDIA bloc partners earlier announced their decision to field a joint 'non-political' candidate for the election. The vice-presidential election, necessitated by the sudden resignation of incumbent Jagdeep Dhankhar last month, is scheduled for September 9. The last date for filing nomination is August 21.
