What is Project Sudarshan Chakra, announced by Modi from ramparts of Red Fort
The project will include not just hard kill options, but also integrated soft kills with greater emphasis on cyber warfare, laser and directed energy weapons.
New Delhi: A fully integrated security architecture linking every air defence system, including the planned Ballistic Missile Defence network and Project Kusha, or Extended Range Air Defence System, and space-based capabilities, is set to take shape under Project Sudarshan Chakra, which was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi Friday, ThePrint has learnt.
He has set a 10-year time frame till 2035 for completion of the project. 'The protective shield will keep expanding so that every citizen feels secure, and whatever kind of technology is used against India, our technology will prove to be superior.'
The prime minister said that Sudarshan Chakra, which incidentally is the Indian name for the S-400 Triumf air defence system, will be a fully modern system, with its research, development and manufacturing done entirely in India.
A source in the security establishment told ThePrint that the idea is more like that of the 'Golden Dome' announced by US President Donald Trump.
This new network, according to sources, will see both existing air defence systems and future plans integrated, providing a pan-India coverage against incoming ballistic missiles, hypersonics, fighter aircraft, loitering munitions and swarm drones among others. The systems will include those which provide strategic cover as well as those tasked for operational coverage.
Sources said that the exact details of the project announced by the prime minister are yet to be fully known, adding that this will include long range air defence missiles to indigenous long-range radars, and would be primarily led by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) with strategic partners in both government and the private sector.
'There are multiple projects that India is currently working on, which are at various stages of completion. However, all of them need to be integrated and be capable of speaking to each other, which will then provide a fully integrated response to any kind of threat,' a source said.
One of the key elements of Project Sudarshan Chakra is Project Kusha, which is India's own long-range air defence system. It will not be a system that will replace the S-400 Triumf, but will complement it.
'The Medium Range Surface to Air Missile (MRSAM) system that we use has a range of about 7-80 kilometres, and the next one available is the S-400, which has a range of up to 400 kilometres. This is where Project Kusha comes in. And yes, eventually Kusha will match the S-400 capabilities,' a source said, adding that Kusha is basically going to be MRSAM with extended boosters.
Another key element of Project Sudarshan Chakra will be the key ballistic missile interceptors that India has developed, sources added.
'The S-400 is basically our ballistic missile defence. However, we also have our indigenous BMD system which has been in the works for long. India already has interceptor missiles for both exo-atmospheric and endo-atmospheric interception. All of this has to be integrated into one security architecture, and this will include indigenous long range radars too,' a source told ThePrint.
Another aspect of the Sudarshan Chakra will be integrated space assets, not just for information, but also for round-the-clock surveillance of enemy operations.
It is understood that the Chinese were able to have a full-fledged overview of India's military operations during Operation Sindoor, a capability that India is already working on.

PM to inaugurate projects worth ₹11,000 crore to boost Delhi's connectivity today
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate two major national highway projects worth ₹11,000 crore in Rohini on Sunday. The projects — the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) and the Delhi section of the Dwarka Expressway — aim to decongest the Capital and improve connectivity, the Prime Minister's Office said in a statement. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta termed UER-II a 'historic gift' for the city and said that it would not only move Delhi closer to becoming traffic-free but also strengthen connectivity across the National Capital Region. Ms. Gupta inspected the venue in Rohini Sector 37, where the inauguration is scheduled to take place. She said the UER-II would reduce the travel time from the Singhu border, which connects Delhi with Haryana, to the IGI Airport from two hours to around 40 minutes. Meanwhile, the Congress hit out at the BJP-led Centre over the 'high' toll tax on the UER-II. Delhi Congress spokesperson Naresh Kumar claimed that the toll tax in Delhi is higher than in the neighbouring States of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. He demanded a reduction of toll charges by at least 50%.

US stock market: How has S&P 500 managed to beat Donald Trump tariffs and climbed historic highs? Check forecast for 2025
Synopsis Citi raised its forecast for where the S&P 500 will finish the year, joining Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, Deutsche Bank and others that raised their targets recently. Those forecasts, however, cluster around where the index stands now -- mostly between 6,300 and 6,600, with Thursday closing at 6,469. Global Desk US stock market today: US Stock Market's top index S&P 500 has continued to hit new highs. The index has recovered all the ground it lost in the global market sell-off in April, after Trump announced sweeping tariffs. It is now more than 5 per cent above its last peak, in February, and almost 10 per cent higher for the year. For the time being, the economic reality of tariffs has yet to catch up with the market's earlier worries. The effective tariff rate on U.S. imports is the highest it has been since the 1930s, upending supply chains, stoking inflation concerns and underpinning an intensifying war of words between President Donald Trump and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome profits remain strong, and the economy, despite worries about what's to come, is still solid. There are pockets of weakness, but the biggest companies that drive the S&P 500's performance have been largely insulated against further impact from tariffs, propelled instead by the growth of artificial intelligence."There is a case to be made there that we are through the worst of it," said Stuart Kaiser, an equity strategist at most companies in the S&P 500 having already reported earnings for the three months through June, the average growth rate of the companies in the index nudged into double digits for the third quarter in a row, according to data from tech companies again led the way, helping to justify their high stock prices. A further contraction in the energy sector, alongside the continued malaise for manufacturers, paled in comparison with the growth of the tech juggernauts. And while retailers and other companies that deal directly with consumers have complained about tariffs, the broad message among the big businesses that make up the S&P 500 is that they are manageable."This earnings season has allayed a lot of fears," said Nelson Yu, head of equities at Alliance the end of the first quarter, just 17% of companies raised their expectations for how they would perform going forward, according to Citi. Many executives simply refrained from offering financial projections, citing uncertainty surrounding the Trump administration's tariff this quarter, more than 40% of companies in the index raised their earnings estimates, anticipating a more favorable environment than previously expected."Companies are telling you they have more clarity, because otherwise they wouldn't provide that guidance," Kaiser much like investors, loathe uncertainty because it prevents planning and making major decisions. At least with the tariffs roughly in place, there is a sense among executives that the picture is becoming month, Citi raised its forecast for where the S&P 500 will finish the year, joining Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, Deutsche Bank and others that raised their targets recently. Those forecasts, however, cluster around where the index stands now -- mostly between 6,300 and 6,600, with Thursday closing at 6,469 -- pointing to an expectation that the rally will slow the rest of the year and underscoring lingering recovery from the stock sell-off in April is less pronounced in other Russell 2000, which is made up of smaller companies less able to absorb the effects of higher tariffs, is just one index that hasn't shown the same roaring recovery as the S&P Russell turned positive for the year after this past week's inflation report showed only a modest impact so far from tariffs, cementing expectations that the Fed will soon cut interest rates as it starts to slowly take the brakes off the economy -- albeit more slowly than the president would interest rates are generally seen as positive for the stock market, but if inflation speeds up significantly, the central bank will be less inclined to keep cutting rates, tempering the forecast for many of the companies that make up the Russell 2000 (and even some in the S&P 500).That wariness has kept many larger fund managers from diving back into the stock market as enthusiastically as retail investors have, according to research from Deutsche Bank. If those hesitant investors return to the market, that could add a tail wind in the second half of the year. But the lack of activity also underlines that not everyone is convinced that the current rally is sustainable.

ED searches DMK minister Periyasamy's residences
CHENNAI: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) raided the houses, business premises and even the MLA hostel rooms of the state rural development minister I Periyasamy and his family members, including his son, IP Senthilkumar MLA, in Chennai and Dindigul, their hometown. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now DMK and its allies were quick in condemning the ED raids saying they were politically-motivated, and that the DMK would not be cowed down by either the ED or Modi. The ED officials, who did not reveal the background for the searches, engaged a duplicate key maker to open the locked rooms in the official residence of the minister on Greenways Road. Meanwhile, the secretary of the assembly secretariat, K Srinavasan, lodged a complaint with Triplicane police alleging that 'unknown persons' had trespassed into the MLA hostel. City police acknowledged the receipt of the complaint by issuing a community service receipt (CSR). Sources said authorities locked the minister's cabin in the Secretariat in anticipation that ED teams might land there too, but ED sleuths stopped with the residence and the MLA hostel. Simultaneous searches happened in three places in Dindigul: the minister's residence in Durairaj Nagar, Senthilkumar's residence at Vallalar Nagar, and the minister's daughter Indra's residence at Seelapadi. After the information about the raids spread, DMK cadres gathered in front of the houses in large numbers. While the CRPF personnel guarded the premises, state police personnel were deployed in the localities concerned to maintain the law and order situation. In Chennai, the searches were wound up in the evening, but the ED is yet to issue an official statement on the searches. DMK organising secretary R S Bharathi condemned the ED action and said the DMK and its cadress cannot be scared by the assaults of the central agencies. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now 'We will not be cowed down by the ED or Modi,' he said. MDMK general secretary Vaiko also condemned the ED raids and said that the Union govt was misusing central agencies to target opposition leaders for a political motive and as a means to intimidate and stifle their voices. 'The central govt is using the Income Tax and Enforcement Departments to intimidate its opponents and stifle the voice. That is why the raid is being carried out at the house of Periyasamy. This is strongly condemnable,' he said. It may be noted that the Madras high court had recently reversed the order of the Dindigul trial court, which relieved the DMK leader and his family members in the Rs 2 crore disproportionate assets case. The case pertains to the accumulation of assets to the tune of Rs 2 crore between 2006 and 2010 when Periyasamy was the housing minister. While DVAC filed a chargesheet against Periyasamy, his wife Suseela, and sons Senthilkumar and Prabhu, the ED also registered a money-laundering case based on the DVAC FIR and interrogated Periyasamy in 2022. However, the Dindigul trial court acquitted all of them from the case. But the Madras high court set aside the trial court order in April and ordered a fresh trial.
