American Idol Just Made Some Major Cuts, And I'm Not Surprised To Hear Carrie Underwood Had A Tougher Time With It

When American Idol airs live Sunday on the 2025 TV schedule, we'll kick off the finals of its 23rd season, with the Top 14 taking the stage to honor the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees. It was not an easy road to pare the 144 contestants who made it past auditions down to just 14, and it sounds like Katy Perry's replacement, Carrie Underwood, may have struggled more than her counterparts when it came to sending artists home.
On the April 21 episode — which included a huge Ryan Seacrest gaffe that might have already had Carrie Underwood upset — the field was cut from 20 singers down to 14. Fan votes determined the first 10, then Underwood, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan were tasked with picking the last four. That meant crushing six artists' dreams all at once, which the Season 4 champion said was nearly too much for her. Underwood told USA TODAY:
My brain was almost like: 'Six! I can't do it!' We were pretty much aligned; there were a couple of concessions that had to be made, but all in all I think we're happy with how it turned out, other than six people had to go home, which is a huge jump.
Coming back to American Idol as a judge 20 years after she won the show has been quite the nostalgia kick for Carrie Underwood, and you have to imagine she's recalling how it felt for her fate to be in the hands of the three people on the other side of that table. It's absolutely no surprise that she would find this first big elimination tough, especially on live TV.
While she appeared to downplay the drama, saying they were 'pretty much aligned,' and ultimately happy with the singers they chose to move forward, Lionel Richie painted a slightly more hectic picture of the decision that had to be made in the time of one commercial break. He said:
The 2½ minutes was: 'Come on, Carrie. Give us the answer.' (Underwood said) 'I don't want any of them to leave!' 'Carrie, we've got a minute left. What is the answer?' This is her first time around, and she's on this side of the judges' table.
Luke Bryan agreed that quick decisions had to be (and were) made. He said there were two contestants who they all agreed on to advance, but choosing the other two out of the eight remaining hopefuls proved to be pretty difficult.
In the end, considering their "whole body of work" up to that point in the show, Josh King, Ché Chesterman, Desmond Roberts and Amanda Barise got the judges' nods. The six less-fortunate singers included Baylee Littrell (son of Backstreet Boy Brian Littrell) and Zaylie Windsor, who Carrie Underwood had compared to Taylor Swift during her audition.
I'm sure the eliminations aren't going to get easier from here on out, but we'll have to see how Carrie Underwood handles it all. The finals kick off at 8 p.m. ET April 27 and continue Monday, April 28, on ABC and streaming the next day on Hulu.

Reigning ‘American Idol' winner Jamal Roberts brings down the house at BET Awards with Kirk Franklin, Tamar Braxton, and more gospel superstars
Weeks after winning American Idol, Jamal Roberts had a star-studded coronation at the BET Awards. The 27-year-old gospel and R&B singer from Meridian, Miss., won Season 23 of ABC's reality TV show on May 18 against country singer John Foster. In doing so, Roberts became the first Black man to win American Idol since Ruben Studdard 22 years prior. "I'm anointed. I know how to use it. I know how to tap in," Roberts told Gold Derby after his victory. Hours before the BET Awards, Roberts serenaded NeNe Leakes on her talk show with a soulful (and completely a cappella) rendition of Joe's "All the Things (Your Man Won't Do)." The Real Housewives star was clearly moved by his voice, as she repeatedly shimmied her shoulders. "I'm just shining, honey!" she shouted when he mentioned a lyric about her shining like a diamond. The BET Awards wasn't the first time Jamal Roberts and Kirk Franklin appeared together at the same venue. During last month's American Idol finale, Franklin took the stage with contestant Canaan James Hill for a compilation of "Melodies from Heaven" and "Love Theory." Later on that night, Roberts performed "Unpretty" and "Liar" with Jelly Roll, and then belted out "Heal" as his winning song. Roberts went viral during his time on the competition show with his performances of "Tennessee Whiskey," "Liar," "Forever," "Try a Little Tenderness," "Shout," "Heal," "Undo It," "I Believe," "Go the Distance," "A Change Is Gonna Come," "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," and "Beauty and the Beast." The 23rd season of American Idol was hosted as always by Ryan Seacrest, and featured Luke Bryan, Carrie Underwood, and Lionel Richie in the judges' seats. Clay Aiken says he'll need to be sedated as son trains to be a pilot
Singer Clay Aiken's son, whom he shares with longtime friend Jaymes Foster, is now 16 years old. And he's already working toward a major life goal. While talking with People, Aiken revealed that his son Parker Aiken is training to become a pilot. 'He's known what he wants to do for, gosh, his whole life,' the former American Idol contestant revealed to People. 'It was a little weird to me because I didn't know what I wanted to do — I still don't.' According to the proud, albeit nervous, father, Aiken said Parker has never once 'changed his mind' when it comes to fulfilling his dreams of being a pilot, sharing that the teenager has 'just went and did his first solo flight two weeks ago, so a big milestone there.' 'Now we're planning on the next one, which I'll need even more Xanax for,' Aiken admitted to People, noting that flight will consist of flying across the state on his own. 'I'm not going to be able to see the plane,' Aiken explained, saying he has yet to join Parker on one of his flights, although his mom Jaymes Foster has. 'You're gonna have to sedate me. Just call an anesthesiologist because I don't have the nerves for that,' despite the rave reviews Parker has received from his instructors. 'His instructors all have said he's better than the adults that they've taught, but like I said, he's been focused on it for years, and that's what he wants to do,' Aiken told People. 'I'm not worried about his skill level. I'm worried about the plane. I told him, 'When you are flying in a big plane, we can talk, but I don't do those JFK Jr. planes.'' 'He knows what he's doing,' Aiken conceded, per People. 'His idol is [pilot] Sully Sullenberger,' who famously landed a commercial plane in the Hudson River after a bird strike disabled both engines, 'and he wants to be as good as him. And that's what he puts his energy into, and I think he is.' Aiken appeared on the second season of Fox's 'American Idol' TV show, according to his website. He finished second place on the show in 2003, TV Insider reported.

Hammerhead shark falls from sky in South Carolina, interrupting disc golf game
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. A hammerhead shark recently crashed down on Splinter City Disc Golf Course in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. While waterspouts can pull fish from the sea and drop them over land, the culprit was a more common fish foe: an osprey (Pandion haliaetus) that had lost its lunch. The unusual event took place on May 18 near the 11th hole of the wooded course near the ocean. "It's not uncommon to see an osprey carrying something, but you take note because it's still really cool to see," Jonathan Marlowe, who witnessed the hammerhead fall as he was playing disc golf, told Garden & Gun magazine. "I thought it would be a random fish." Instead, it was a small, dead hammerhead shark, easily identifiable by its wide, mallet-shaped cranial structure known as a cephalofoil. Also known as "fish hawks," ospreys are excellent aquatic hunters and the only raptors with feet designed to catch slippery prey. But they tend to feed on fish less than 12 inches (30 centimeters) long, and the hammerhead found on the golf course appears to be longer than a foot. Related: Sharks: Facts about some of the ocean's top predators It's likely the osprey carried the fish at least half a mile (800 meters) from the ocean before losing its grip. Marlowe said two crows chased the osprey into a tree, where it dropped the hammerhead onto the ground below. Crows and other smaller birds are known to use a technique called mobbing to protect their territories during breeding season by teaming up to ward off predators. According to posts on the Myrtle Beach Disc Golf Facebook page, wildlife such as snakes, raccoons, and alligators are common sights on local courses. But seeing a shark in the woods might just be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. "We couldn't believe it and kept asking ourselves, 'did that really just happen?'" Marlowe said, who left the hammerhead behind in the hopes that the raptor might return and make a meal out of it. A survey by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources that ran from 2013 to 2016 detected three types of hammerheads — bonnethead (Sphyrna tiburo), scalloped hammerhead (Sphyrna lewini), and great hammerhead (Sphyrna mokarran) — in coastal waters off South Carolina and Georgia. And in 2013, a new, rare species was discovered in the same area. Named the Carolina hammerhead (Sphyrna gilbert), the fish look a lot like scalloped hammerheads but are genetically different. It is unclear which of these species fell from the sky in Myrtle Beach.
