Wales captain Metcalfe looks to follow in sister's footsteps
Metcalfe and her teammates have the opportunity to push their cases for full international call-ups when they take on Ireland this afternoon as the competition gets underway in Ystrad Mynach, Caerphilly.
It is the second edition of the U20 tournament, which debuted in Italy last year, and despite suffering three defeats out of three 12 months ago, the Welsh class of 2025 are relishing the chance to showcase what they can do.
'I'm really excited,' said back rower Metcalfe, who attended Hartpury College.
'The girls have had a good few weeks of training, we've had a good team run this morning. We are feeling really confident going into tomorrow.
'We are really positive. The girls have gelled really well today and it's so nice to see everyone from different places coming together to represent Wales.'
Following on from the 2024 Women's Summer Series, 14 players across the six countries went on to achieve senior honours during the 2025 Guinness Women's Six Nations, including Branwen's sister Nel, 20.
And Metcalfe, who is from Llanrwst and started playing rugby aged seven, highlighted the importance of the competition for giving players the opportunity to standout and to use it as a springboard to break into the senior team.
'Our pathway in Wales is definitely working,' she said. 'I have seen it myself personally, my sister is in the senior squad now, and it is really great to see how we've got so many youngsters pushing for places.
'She has always been an inspiration to me. I definitely want to follow in her footsteps if I can.'
With women's rugby going from strength to strength and the game on an upward trajectory, the 2025 Six Nations Women's Summer Series is a big chance for stars of the future to gain vital international experience, graduate along the development pathway, while also inspiring a new generation of rugby fans.
Spread across three dates during July, Wales will also face Scotland on 11 July before rounding off their campaign against Italy six days later.

Today's rugby news as WRU told to act swiftly over cutting team call and Welsh players 'considered' for Lions call-ups
Today's rugby news as WRU told to act swiftly over cutting team call and Welsh players 'considered' for Lions call-ups These are your morning headlines on Tuesday, July 15. The WRU make a major announcement on Monday about the future of the game in Wales (Image: Huw Evans Picture Agency ) These are your morning headlines on Tuesday, July 15. WRU told to act fast Former Wales international Chris Horsman has told the WRU to act swiftly and show "strong leadership" after the governing body announced it could possibly cut two professional teams. On Monday the WRU released a statement saying they were considering a "radical" strategy to change the game in Wales, with a period of consultation with the pro clubs about to be entered into. Horsman, who played for the disbanded Celtic Warriors, says decisive action is now required. "What the game needs more than anything at the moment is stability," said Horsman, who was capped 14 times for Wales, to the BBC. Article continues below "For me, if they're [the WRU] going to make the cut they've got to just come forward they've got to give us some strong leadership." Initially the WRU said it wanted to retain all four professional teams and were adamant it had the required funding to make all successful, but they have changed their stance. All now face instability, which Horsman spelt out in no uncertain terms. Sign up to Inside Welsh rugby on Substack for the exclusive five-week tour diary from Japan and Australia. "Potentially they have got a year left of their contract," Horsman added. "They [the regions] want financial stability. Are you going to buy a season ticket? If you're a business are you going to sponsor the region, because you don't know in three, four months' time, you might be told it's not going to be there anymore? "So there are so many things resting on this decision and again we've got to wait. "I know it's not going to be straightforward but we've heard that things were going to happen 18 months ago and they haven't, so I don't put a lot of stock in it's going to happen fast. I hope it does for the players' sake and for Welsh rugby's sake. "One thing I will say is when we were at the Celtic Warriors, it happened over a weekend, pretty much, and as painful as it was at least it was done and then there was a decision made that the players were divvied up, pretty equally between the four regions and the game moved on quickly. "I think that's what's needed now." Welsh players were 'considered' for Lions call-ups British and Irish Lions assistant John Dalziel says that Welsh players were considered for the various call-ups made by the tourists in recent days. Andy Farrell has called Jamie Osbourne, Jamie George, Thomas Clarkson, Darcy Graham, Rory Sutherland and Ewan Ashman in to the squad to offer cover - with the size of the squad going up from 38 to 44. No Welshmen have been called up - with Jac Morgan remaining the sole Wales player in the squad. "They were considered like everything," said Dalziel when asked if any Welsh players were in the mix. "The process of the last few days hasn't been in the here and now. "It's been for a long period of time. We've had a big list. When you're selecting the squad, there's so many quality players that if you ask anyone else, you'd have a different group of players. "There's so many good players. Unfortunately, top-quality players have been left out the selection. "They've gone and performed with their countries. As needs must, they're getting opportunities - some a bit later." With hookers and looseheads called up, there could have been an opportunity for Dewi Lake or Nicky Smith to get a call-up. Smith ended the tour of Japan with an injury - travelling back with his foot in a boot. As for Lake, the Lions opted for different hookers in George and Ashman. 'There's nothing really external that we considered or talked about," added Dalziel. 'Look at Jamie George, he had two 14-hour flights to get here. It's not an easy choice to get him in. 'We looked at it properly, it was a process with Jamie being part of the set-up at the start. 'New era' for Welsh rugby Wales international Alex Cuthbert says the win in Japan in the second Test signals a "new era" in Welsh rugby. A shocking run of 18 Test defeats came to an end on Saturday when Matt Sherratt's men dug deep to beat the Brave Blossoms in the sweltering heat of Kobe. It levelled up the series 1-1 and Wales will hope this is the start of a clean slate now for whoever takes the reins permanently as Wales head coach. BBC pundit Cuthbert says an enormous amount of credit needs to go to the players for digging deep in highly-emotional circumstances. "Wales going through this run of not being able to win, it's a habit that sticks with you and the pressure builds and builds," he told the BBC. "You could see it last week. This week they just seemed to manage it a lot better. You've got to give credit to those boys, they've had such a tough year. "Someone like Aaron Wainwright has not won a game of rugby this year - it is good to see and just to get that monkey off their back. "Whoever comes in now doesn't have that hanging around their neck like Matt Sherratt said. "To get the win, for me now it's a complete clean slate, it's a new era at Welsh rugby." Scotland duo out By Gavin McCafferty, PA Scotland have lost Jamie Ritchie and Tom Jordan to injury for their final summer tour match against Samoa. Flanker Ritchie, who left Edinburgh this summer to sign for Perpignan, and new Bristol back Jordan were both injured in Saturday's 29-14 defeat by Fiji. However, Matt Fagerson has brushed off the knock he suffered in Suva and both Ben Muncaster and Gregor Brown are in line to return for Friday's game at Eden Park in Auckland. Assistant coach Pete Horne said: 'Jamie, unfortunately, he's hurt his foot. He's going to be ruled out for the weekend, which is a shame for him. 'We've got good news on Matt. He trained earlier and is going to be fit for the weekend, which is great. 'And then another one that's unlucky is Tom Jordan. He had a little bit of pain after the game. He doesn't really complain about anything but he had a bit of swelling in his hand. 'He went for a scan and an X-ray and he's actually got a fracture in his hand. So he's going to be ruled out of this weekend as well.' On the players who missed out on Saturday, Horne said: 'Gregor is progressing really well. He took part in a bit of training earlier. He's going through his return to play protocol but he's tracking really well and should be available, all going well, over the next couple of days. Article continues below 'And Ben was back training by the back end last week. So he'll be fine as well.'

The expected Lions team now from all the pundits as Jac Morgan causes division
The expected Lions team now from all the pundits as Jac Morgan causes division It is touch and go whether the Wales star is selected for the first Lions Test Jac Morgan of the British & Irish Lions (Image: 2025 Getty Images ) There have been very few players on this British & Irish Lions tour who have made as positive a contribution as Jac Morgan, yet there are no guarantees the Wales star will be selected for the first Test against the Wallabies this weekend. Last Saturday's comprehensive victory over the invitational AUSNZ XV has given Andy Farrell a number of selection headaches ahead of the first Test against the Wallabies and the make-up of the backrow will be at the forefront of his thoughts. Morgan put in another industrious performance, dishing out a mountain of tackles, while his work at the attacking breakdown was mightily impressive, which allowed others to shine. But he faces stiff competition from the likes of Tom Curry, Josh van der Flier and Henry Pollock, among others, for a place in the 23. Despite Morgan's fine form many former players and journalists are not tipping the 25-year-old for a place in the Test team. Sign up to Inside Welsh rugby on Substack to get exclusive news stories and insight from behind the scenes in Welsh rugby. Irish legend and La Rochelle head coach Ronan O'Gara, who is working as a pundit on Sky Sports, did not include Morgan in his Test side, opting instead for van der Flier. Article continues below "I've gone with familiarity in the back-row [Ireland trio Beirne, Van der Flier, Conan], because I think the bench impact of Ben Earl and Henry Pollock just adds an awful lot to it, with probably the benefit of them covering as centres as well," he told Sky Sports. "I like what they do as hybrids." The Independent have not selected Morgan in its Test team, with Curry preferred but the Wales star was included in their squad. However, Morgan has won support in some quarters with former England openside and 2003 Rugby World Cup winner Neil Back believes the Ospreys man should start but believes Farrell will go down a different path. "If it was solely my choice and he goes well then I would pick Morgan 100%," Back told talkSPORT. 'I would love Morgan to get in because I sort of feel it's wrong if there's not a Welsh player in the Lions XV. 'I think Ollie Chessum will be the six, Jack Conan at eight and that leaves the seven. "So does he stick with van der Flier, or does he go with Tom Curry or Jac Morgan, who's been particularly good at turning over the ball and sort of throws his body in there? "If I'm Andy I think he'll pick van der Flier because he will go with what he knows and he is an incredible player." Join WalesOnline Rugby's WhatsApp Channel here to get the breaking news sent straight to your phone for free Following the comprehensive victory over the AUNZ XV last weekend The Telegraph gave Morgan a six out of 10 rating for his performance but a four out of 10 chance of starting the first Test. MailOnline rated Morgan's performance as an eight out of 10, while Rugby Pass gave him a seven out of 10. But the Telegraph's senior rugby writer Charlie Morgan says he would select a backrow of Curry, Morgan and Jack Conan with Ben Earl on the bench. "This would require Farrell to take a leap of faith and overlook Beirne and van der Flier, a pair of loyal performers with intimate knowledge of his intricate systems, while holding back Pollock and trusting a Curry-Morgan double act to deliver on a month's worth of alchemy as opposed to years of familiarity," writes Morgan in The Telegraph. "Margins are terribly fine, but I like what these sevens offer as a collective and feel as though Earl has forced his way in." Lions legends Sir Ian McGeechan and Sam Warburton also selected Morgan in their starting Test side. The reality is it is touch and go whether Morgan makes the Test squad and Farrell could go with a player he trusts in Ireland star van der Flier. All will be revealed on Thursday. Below is the Lions team and players who are currently being picked the most by all the pundits. Pundits' most popular Lions XV: Blair Kinghorn; Tommy Freeman, Huw Jones, Sione Tuipulotu, James Lowe, Finn Russell, Jamison Gibson-Park; Ellis Genge, Dan Sheehan, Tadhg Furlong, Maro Itoje (Captain), Joe McCarthy, Ollie Chessum, Josh van der Flier, Jack Conan. Rhayader farmer sets new British two-stand and solo record
Two mid Wales shearers have set a new eight-hour two-stand British ewe shearing record - on the hottest day of the year. The duo of Gethin Lewis and Llyr Evans smashed the previous record of 1,075 ewes, set by Martin Howlett and Jonny Roberts in 2019. Shearing started at 7am at Gethin's family farm of Glan Elan, in Cwmdauddwr, Rhayader, on Saturday, July 12. After four runs the last ewe was shorn at 5pm, meaning a combined total of 1,364 ewes had been shorn in eight hours. Gethin, a two-time Welsh champion shearer, also set a new British individual record, shearing 996 ewes throughout the day. Llyr shore 668 ewes, which also eclipsed the previous solo record set by Huw Jones, of 663. 'I'm delighted that our attempt was successful,' said Gethin, 29. 'It's been a 12-month journey preparing for today, but all the hard work has been worth it.' Llyr added: 'All roads led to today, and I'm proud of what we have both achieved – it feels great to be a British shearing record holder.' Of the hot weather, Llyr, from Trawsgoed, near Aberystwyth, added: 'The extreme heat made the challenge more difficult and at times during the day it was extremely difficult and we both needed to dig deep to get through to the end.' Both Gethin and Llyr paid tribute to all those who had supported their attempt. 'This record would not have been possible without the help and support of both our families,' said Gethin. 'Thank you, it means so much to us both that we have achieved what we have here today. 'We'd also like to pay tribute to the support and commitment of so many people, too many to name individually. Llyr Evans in action. (Image: British Wool) 'From the farmers supplying the sheep, pen men that were here with us all day, the wool wrappers and all our family and friends – a huge thank you.' Gareth Jones, head of member engagement at British Wool, said: 'On behalf of British Wool, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to Gethin and Llyr on their incredible achievement. 'Setting a shearing record requires not only personal dedication and skill but also the collective effort of a strong support team. We commend everyone involved in making this success possible.'
