Kristin Scott Thomas reveals personal connection to directorial debut ‘My Mother's Wedding'
Speaking to CBS, she talked about growing up with the weight of unresolved grief, 'I had this feeling of something missing. These events left a huge hole I tried to fill through imagination.'
Kristin Scott Thomas brings personal memories to the screen
In My Mother's Wedding, Thomas plays Diana, a woman preparing for her third marriage after she was widowed twice: a fictional mirror of her own mother's life. The film explores how Diana and her three daughters reunite for the weekend wedding and are forced to confront their past, their pain, and their fractured relationships, according to another People report.
Scarlett Johansson, Sienna Miller, and Emily Beecham portray Diana's daughters, each carrying emotional baggage of their own. Johansson plays a Royal Navy captain, Miller a famous actor, and Beecham a nurse: all women shaped by the shadow of their lost fathers and a complicated mother.

Thomas, who spent much of her life in France but is now based in London, said during the interview that her English blood and French culture coexist. Her duality has long been present in her acting career: as comfortable in The English Patient and Darkest Hour as in French-language drama like I've Loved You So Long.
Directing, she told CBS, was an extraordinary and exhausting joy. 'The satisfaction that comes from filmmaking is unlike anything else,' Thomas said and likened the creative control to the completeness she searched for as a child writing stories of the family life she never knew.
My Mother's Wedding plot
Set in the English countryside, My Mother's Wedding is more than a family drama; it is an emotional reckoning with loss, identity, and motherhood. According to People, Diana declares in the film, 'I brought you up to be women, not just daughters,' and urges her children to grow beyond grief.
With a supporting cast that includes Freida Pinto and a tone that balances heartbreak with humor, Thomas' debut captures the complex, messy beauty of family and the strength it takes to heal.

This 90 minutes thriller will send chills down your spine, made on budget of Rs 2.5 crore, earned Rs 7 crore, has IMDb rating of 7.8, movie is…, lead actors were…
In the late 1990s, when Bollywood was dominated by song-and-dance routines and family dramas, a unique psychological thriller emerged, challenging the conventional norms of Indian cinema. This film, characterized by its minimalist approach and intense narrative, stood out as an anomaly in the industry, which is now hailed as cult classic of all time. Which film is this? The film we are talking about is 'Kaun?', a 1999 Hindi-language psychological horror directed by legendary Ram Gopal Varma and penned by maverick Anurag Kashyap. Featuring a compact cast of Urmila Matondkar, Manoj Bajpayee, and Sushant Singh, the movie unfolds entirely within a single house, emphasizing suspense and character dynamics over elaborate sets or musical interludes. Remarkably, the film was shot in just 15 days with only 3 actors, showcasing Varma's efficiency and Kashyap's vision. What is the storyline? This film revolves around a nameless woman, portrayed by Matondkar, who is alone at home during a stormy evening. Her solitude is interrupted by the arrival of a stranger (Bajpayee), leading to a tense and unpredictable interaction. The narrative delves deep into themes of trust, fear, and deception, keeping viewers on edge throughout its 90-minute runtime. What impact was created by RGV's thriller on audience's mind? Upon its release, Kaun? received mixed reviews. While some critics appreciated its experimental nature and tight storytelling, others found its deviation from mainstream Bollywood elements jarring. Commercially, the film had a modest performance, earning approximately Rs 7 crore against a budget of Rs 2.5 crore. However, over the years, it has garnered a cult following, with many praising its innovative experimental approach and compelling performances. How were the performances? Urmila Matondkar's portrayal of the enigmatic protagonist is often highlighted as one of her most nuanced performances. Her ability to convey vulnerability and unpredictability added depth to the character, making the film's climax all the more impactful. Manoj Bajpayee, too, delivered a memorable performance, oscillating between charm and menace with finesse. Sushant Singh had a brief but powerful role in Kaun? as the mysterious third character. Though his screen time was limited, his intense and silent presence added a sharp twist, enhancing the film's suspense. It was one of his early roles that showcased his potential in thrillers. Did Kaun receive any accolades? While Kaun? didn't receive major awards upon its release, but its influence on the genre is undeniable. It paved the way for more experimental thrillers in Indian cinema, proving that compelling stories could be told without the usual Bollywood tropes. Today, Kaun? is studied and celebrated for its contribution to the evolution of Indian thrillers, solidifying its place as a masterclass in suspenseful storytelling, which has hold its IMDb rating at 7.8. The film is currently available for viewing on YouTube.

Kiran Desai returns to Booker longlist with new novel after 19 years
Booker Prize-winning author Kiran Desai on Tuesday returned to the coveted literary award longlist with The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny', a novel described by the judges as a vast and immersive tale about a pair of young Indians in America. The 53-year-old Delhi-born author, who won the Booker Prize 19 years ago in 2006 with The Inheritance of Loss', joins 12 writers from around the world for the so-called Booker Dozen of 13 books that will be whittled down to six shortlisted titles by September. Desai's latest novel stands out as the longest on the longlist, weighing in at 667 pages and published by Hamish Hamilton. The shortest is "Universality" by Natasha Brown at 156 pages. "She has spent almost 20 years writing The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny'. Should she win this year, she would become the fifth double winner in the prize's 56-year history, Booker Prize Foundation said in a statement. Desai has a family history with the prize: her mother Anita Desai was shortlisted for the Booker three times, it noted. According to the Booker Prize website, the novel follows the lives of Sonia and Sunny, two young people navigating the many forces that shape their lives: country, class, race, history, and the complicated bonds that link one generation to the next. The 2025 prize longlist was chosen from 153 submissions, celebrating the best works of long-form fiction by writers of any nationality writing in English and published in the UK and/or Ireland between October 2024 and 30 September 2025. "The 13 longlisted novels bring the reader to Hungary, Albania, the north of England, Malaysia, Ukraine, Korea, London, New York, Trinidad and Greece, India and the West Country, said Roddy Doyle, Booker Prize 2025 Chair of Judges. "There are short novels and some very long ones. There are novels that experiment with form and others that do so less obviously. Some of them examine the past and others poke at our shaky present. They are all alive with great characters and narrative surprises. All, somehow, examine identity, individual or national, and all, I think, are gripping and excellent, he said. Other works in the race to be shortlisted include Trinidadian author Claire Adam's Love Forms', Malaysian Tash Aw's The South', Canadian-Ukrainian Maria Reva's Ending', Hungarian-British David Szalay's Flesh' and Albanian-American Ledia Xhoga's Misinterpretation'. Four British authors in the running are: Natasha Brown with Universality', Jonathan Buckley with One Boat', Andrew Miller with The Land in Winter' and Benjamin Wood with Seascraper'. And, the three American authors completing the longlist include Susan Choi with Flashlight', Katie Kitamura with Audition' and Ben Markovits with The Rest of Our Lives'. "The stories are set all over the world, and as we looked through the books we began to notice that their authors, all of them writing in English, had come from many different places too It's the highest number of different nationalities we've seen on a Booker Prize longlist for a decade yet British writers are strongly represented too, said Gaby Wood, Chief Executive of the Booker Prize Foundation. "Oh wow! Kiran Desai's The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny is longlisted for the 2025 Booker Prize 19 years after The Inheritance of Loss won. What a staggering return! (Out in September!)" Manasi Subramanian, editor-in-chief and vice-president at Penguin Random House India, which overlooks the Hamish Hamilton imprint, wrote on social media. For the first time, the shortlist of six books will be announced at a public event, to be held at Southbank Centre's Royal Festival Hall in London on September 23. The winning book for 2025 will be announced on November 10 at a ceremony at Old Billingsgate in London, with the winner receiving GBP 50,000 (approx Rs 58 lakh). The six shortlisted authors will each receive GBP 2,500 (approx Rs 2.90 lakh) and a specially bound edition of their book.
