Fire rips through Fiorentina's training ground as four people rushed to hospital
Fiorentina's training ground was on fire on Saturday night with firefighters needing hours to control the blaze as four people were taken to hospital following the incident
Fiorentina's training ground was engulfed by fire on Saturday night as a terrifying blaze resulted in four people being rushed to hospital as firefighters attempted to contain the situation in Italy.
Flames broke out from inside a pavilion that provides accommodation for young Fiorentina players at Viola Park, according to reports. The entire area was evacuated with the fire continuing to burn throughout the night.
It is is understood that the flames started at around 2:15am and led the Florence fire command and the Pontassieve detachment to send 20 units to the site, which included ladder trucks, tankers and an air wagon. Extinguishing operations had to continue until 6:15am.
Four people - three boys and an adult accompanying them - were taken to hospital for checks due to exposure to the fumes. Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire. The building has been deemed unusable after the scary incident.
Fiorentina put out a statement following the incident which read: "During the night a fire, the causes of which are still unclear, broke out inside a room in the pavilion dedicated to the youth sector of the 'Rocco B. Commisso' Viola Park.
"The alarm system, emergency procedures and the preparation of the staff present ensured the rapid evacuation of the structure. Some people were taken to hospital for checks and accompanied by our health workers, and have already been discharged in good condition. The area of the pavilion affected by the fire has, at the moment, been isolated and made safe."
The mayor of Bagno a Ripoli, Francesco Pignotti, claimed the fire had caused a "night of fear" but was grateful that no one was hurt as he heaped praise to the response of the Fire Brigade.
He said: "The images of the flames at Viola Park are terrible. A night of fear that fortunately did not cause serious damage to people. The three boys and the adult taken to the hospital are under observation but are fine. We are in contact with Fiorentina and our entire community is close to them. Thanks to the firefighters and the staff who intervened promptly, avoiding the worst."
This season Fiorentina, where David de Gea now calls home, finished sixth ahead of the likes of Lazio and AC Milan and will play in next year's Europa Conference League. They missed out on a European final when they were beaten by Real Betis in the semi-finals.

Paul Scholes urges Man Utd to sign Viktor Gyokeres and 37-goal star this summer
Scholes wants two big arrivals to cover a problem position (Picture: Getty Images) Paul Scholes has urged Manchester to splash out on two new centre forwards this summer, insisting the club must also give Rasmus Hojlund another chance. After a dismal 2024-25 season drew to a close, United have moved quickly to strengthen their squad this summer having already signed Mathues Cunha from Wolves. Bryan Mbeumo would appear to be their next target with the Brentford star favouring a move to Old Trafford despite interest from Arsenal and Newcastle United. While both those players would add goals to the squad having each netted 15 and 20 in the Premier League last season, United are still desperate for a centre forward to lead the line. Hojlund scored just four times in 32 Premier League appearances last term with Inter Milan interested in offering the Dane a route back to Italy this summer. Scholes has sympathised with the 22-year-old and believes United should resist the urge to cash in on him. The United legend also wants to club to recreate the days where Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Teddy Sheringham took turns hitting the back of the net, insisting the club should have at least three stellar striker options at their disposal. Osimhen will return to Napoli this summer (Picture: Reuers) With that in mind, Scholes has suggested moves to bring in both Victor Osimhen and Viktor Gyokeres. 'I think Osimhen, it sounds like a doable one,' Scholes told The Overlap Fan Debate. 'When you talk about financial problems, he could be doable. But I'd keep Hojlund. I know he's not been great, but he's a 22-year-old kid playing on his own for Man United the last two years. Gyokeres wanted by a host of clubs (Picture: Getty Images) 'He's had to play every week, he is the only one. Man United should have at least three top centre forwards. I'd have him and Osimhen. Him, Osimhen and Gyokeres. 'Hojlund has struggled like mad but he's not had the chance to sit down and watch. If a striker is not playing well a manager will tell him just come back and have a look. Get a feel for the game. More Trending 'We all know he has centre forward quality. Not enough but if he has experience around him… he's been flogged to death.' Scholes wants Hojlund to stay (Picture: Getty Images) United are among the clutch of clubs interested in signing Gyokeres after his haul of 52 goals in 54 games for Sporting CP last season. United's lack of European football is a major stumbling block – although immediate rivals Chelsea and Arsenal appear for the time being to be focusing on alternative targets in Liam Delap and Benjamin Sesko. Osimhen meanwhile has been linked with a move to the Premier League for a number of years. The Nigeria international has just finished a season-long loan at Galatasaray where he scored 37 goals in 41 appearances, returning to Napoli who are expected to sell him this summer. Al Hilal eye Man Utd revenge as new target identified after Bruno Fernandes snub
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has now rejected a mega-money move to Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal but they could still cause the Red Devils an issue Al Hilal could be set to disrupt Manchester United's summer transfer plans - despite being rejected by Red Devils skipper Bruno Fernandes. The Saudi Pro League side have spent several weeks working on a deal for the 31-year-old attacking midfielder but they have now been snubbed by Fernandes, who wants to continue playing in Europe. Al Hilal were prepared to pay eye-watering cash to get a deal over the line before the Club World Cup but they have now been forced to move onto other targets and one of the names that is now of key interest is Ederson of Atalanta, who has been courted by Amorim is keen to strengthen his options in the middle of the park but United have prioritised reinvigorating their attack during the opening stages of the summer window. A deal for Wolves ' Matheus Cunha has been completed while a move for Brentford winger Bryan Mbeumo is now gathering pace after he approved a switch to Old Trafford. But once United have made some sales, they plan to make notable changes to Amorim's midfield and Ederson is a name of huge admiration. United are among a list of top European clubs to have held talks with the player's agent Andre Cury in the past few months. Manchester City have also shown an interest in the 25-year-old, who is valued at around £50m, however, Al Hilal are now considering a move of their own and they are armed with big money. The winds of change are beginning to sweep through the Saudi Pro League club and they're currently in deep discussions with Inter Milan boss Simone Inzaghi about replacing Jorge Jesus following his departure in early May. There has also been interest in Bournemouth's Andoni Iraola and Fulham's Marco Silva but both head coaches politely rejected the advances. Meanwhile, Al Hilal are also working on a deal for AC Milan left-back Theo Hernandez and there is also admiration for Aston Villa duo Youri Tielemans and Amadou Onana. Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes is also popular at Al Hilal but he's expected to stay at St James' Park this summer after they secured Champions League qualification for the second time in three seasons. Al Hilal are determined to add some star quality to their ranks ahead of the Club World Cup where they'll face Real Madrid, Red Bull Salzburg and Mexican outfit Pachuca in the group stages. Last week, deals were in the pipeline for both Cristiano Ronaldo and Fernandes but both deals now look off with Ronaldo poised to sign a new contract with Al-Nassr. Serbian striker Aleksandar Mitrovic is among those that could depart the Middle East club this summer as they target high-profile changes to their squad.
