Ole Gunnar Solskjaer delivers savage eight-word dig after beating Jose Mourinho

Daily Mirror06-05-2025

Besiktas earned a derby win away against Fenerbahce as Ole Gunner Solskjaer earned a win over Jose Mourinho before being able to fire a clever quip in his press conference
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made a tongue-in-cheek remark to Jose Mourinho, after the pair faced off in the Turkish Super League. Manchester United hero Solskjaer came away with a victory against the former Chelsea boss as he guided his Besiktas side to a narrow 1-0 win over Fenerbahce.
The duo have a shared history after the ex-Norway sharpshooter succeeded Mourinho in the Old Trafford hotseat. Mourinho won the EFL Cup and Europa League while in charge at United but lasted little more than two seasons at the club.

After seven wins in 19 games, the Portuguese coach was sacked with the Red Devils 19 points off of top spot. Solskjaer took the reigns as caretaker manager before being appointed as the permanent boss on a three-year contract after winning 14 matches of his first 19.

Ultimately, Solskjaer's stint did not bring silverware to the club and he was sacked in 2021. The 52-year-old's move to Besiktas is his first managerial role since being given his marching orders by United chiefs.
And Solskjaer has guided Besiktas to fourth in the table since being appointed in January, and sit 20 points behind Mourinho's Fenerbahce's side. That counted for little as the Black Eagles earned an unfancied win to ruffle Mourinho's feathers.
Gedson Fernandes' goal on the verge of half-time separated the sides to leave the Special One fuming. "If we played Besiktas 10 times, we'd win eight," he said. "They'd win one, and one would be a draw.'
Asked for his response, Solskjaer offered a quick quip after earning three points. "Looks like they'll be winning the next eight," he offered.
There were no sparks flying between the managers however. "Ole is here for a few months," said Mourinho "He is experienced and intelligent enough to learn what he has to learn. I am nobody to give him advice.

"We spoke in the tunnel before the game. It was normal things two guys who respect each other but have to play a match say to each other. After it was the same.
"We are experienced enough for him not to be on the moon because he won, just as I am not in hell because I lost a derby. We respect each other well. I think we like each other too. I would say that."
Mourinho did appear in a fiery mood however, with Galatasaray's title win drawing a step closer. The league-leaders are eight points clear of Fenerbahce with four matches remaining. The ex-Inter Milan manager aired some of his grievances.

"When some of your players don't perform well enough, it affects your collective performance as well," he said. "The outcome of the league was determined before the league even started. The games we lost at home were decisive. VAR decisions, referee decisions. I am so tired of talking about these. I have no power, nothing changes, but this is the situation, this is the truth."
Despite having another year on his contract, Mourinho's future appears uncertain. The veteran's latest comments will do little to quell any speculation over how long he has remaining in Turkey.
"I am not speaking about next season," he said. "I will speak internally, not to the media. If there is something, out of respect to the president and the board, I will not bring it into the public."

Transfer news LIVE: Liverpool in for Barcola EXCLUSIVE, Chelsea urged to sign Guehi, Prem clubs queue for Sancho

'Blackmail and insults won't work' Sporting's president has furiously hit back at Manchester United target Victor Gyokeres saying: 'Threats and blackmail don't work,' writes MARTIN BLACKBURN. The Sweden striker is considering going on strike to force through a dream move to United or Arsenal. Gyokeres, 27, is furious with Sporting for going back on their word over a transfer promise to him and plans not to play for the club again. He believes he had a gentleman's agreement to leave the Portuguese giants for £50million with a further £8million in add-ons but that claim has been rubbished by president Frederico Varandas. And the Sporting chief insists he will not be bullied into letting the ex-Coventry forward move to the Prem on the cheap this summer. Varandas said: 'Sporting will not accept blackmail and insults – you should know me better by now. 'One thing is certain, we will not accept £50m plus £8m. As of now, Sporting has not received any bids for Gyokeres. 'He is a fantastic professional, to this day he has had zero offers. He has a three-year contract with Sporting.'

Leeds United get verdict on finishing above Man Utd in Premier League table

Leeds United legend Stuart Dallas has discussed how the club can compete with staunch rivals Manchester United once the 2025/2026 season gets underway, with the club having to get one thing right to do so Leeds United icon Stuart Dallas believes the club can eclipse bitter rivals Manchester United in the Premier League next season - if they get their recruitment right. Leeds will be returning to the English top flight for 2025/26 after stunning the Championship this season. With Daniel Farke at the helm, Leeds lost just four times as they claimed 100 points alongside Burnley. However, the Whites topped the division with a superior goal difference. ‌ While 2024/2025 represented a joyous season for Leeds, the same can't be said for the Red Devils. Under Ruben Amorim, United found themselves finishing in 15th place in the Premier League and losing to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final. ‌ Dallas, 34, now thinks Leeds can push on and challenge Amorim's team come next season, with reports suggesting that the Whites' owners, 49ers Enterprises, have made around £100 million available for transfers this summer. Speaking exclusively to Mirror Football, at the Leeds American Golf for the #RifeDontMiss putting challenge, he said: "The gap is big. That's common knowledge because promoted teams and how they've done in the last number of seasons. I think it is continuing to grow. "Leeds are in a position where they financially can go and strengthen. You can give me £150m and I can go and spend it. What I'm trying to say is the recruitment has to be right. "I think Leeds have got that in place this season. I think they'll have learned from the past and they have the potential to really do something within the next number of years in the Premier League. But again, for me, the recruitment has to be key, which I'm sure it will be." Dallas, who called time on his career in 2024 after making 248 appearances for Leeds, also touched upon the club's Player of the Year for the 2024/25 season, Daniel James. ‌ James played at Old Trafford for three seasons before moving to Elland Road, but Dallas isn't convinced United will be ruing the decision to let the Welsh star go, despite the leaps and bounds made by the 27-year-old. "I think Man Utd have had a number of players, obviously like every club, come and go. Dan has obviously found his feet at Leeds and he's happy. I know his family and that's settled here," Dallas added. ‌ "He's been fantastic this season. He started adding goals and assists and numbers to his game, which maybe previously wasn't there. He's always had the talent. "His pace is electrifying and it was just his end product that was missing. He started to produce that this year. I wouldn't say Man Utd will look at him and regret letting him go. But certainly, he's had a really, really good season." Dallas was speaking exclusively to Mirror Football at the second #RifeDontMiss Challenge, celebrating the launch of the new RIFE Black Edition putters. Jadon Sancho's preferred club tells him they are not interested in transfer

Borussia Dortmund have told Jadon Sancho they cannot offer him a route back to the club this summer. Sancho has returned to Manchester United after Chelsea opted against signing him on a permanent deal following a season on loan at Stamford Bridge, paying a £5million penalty to avoid keeping him at the club. Ruben Amorim has no plans to integrate Sancho back into the first-team at Old Trafford. The 25-year-old has one year left on his deal thought to be worth around £300,000-a-week with United desperate to offload him on a permanent basis this summer. After being banished from the squad by Erik ten Hag, Sancho returned to former club Dortmund in January 2024, showing slight glimpses of his once fearsome form as the Bundesliga side reached the Champions League final. A return to Dortmund is reportedly Sancho's preferred option – but his former side are focusing on other priorities this summer. Bayer Leverkusen have also been linked with a move for Sancho with the club searching for a replacement for Florian Wirtz who is poised to complete a record move to Liverpool. 'Of course, contact with Jadon is always there, in some way, because we have a very long history,' Dortmund's sporting director Sebastian Kehl said. 'But it's not an issue for us right now. We have other priorities at the moment, and that's why the Sancho issue was probably played up more in the media than discussed internally.' More Trending However, the appointment of ten Hag as Xabi Alonso's replacement would surely scupper those plans given the history between the Dutchman and Sancho. United will take a huge hit on the £71m they paid to side Sancho five years if they do manage to offload him this summer. A loan deal could be a more likely option with Aston Villa, Newcastle United and Tottenham named as three clubs monitoring his situation. United meanwhile are also hoping to offload Marcus Rashford and Antony. The England international is still holding out for a dream move to Barcelona while Real Betis, where Antony shone on loan last season, are not thought to be in a position to meet United's asking price for a permanent move.
