‘Some great charity..what have they gotten from it?': Ambati Rayudu slams RR for heavily investing in youngsters
The Rajasthan Royals have struggled top pick up form this season in the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025), having suffered six defeats out of the 8 games they played this seaso. Sanju Samson's men are on a four-game losing streak, narrowly letting go of games, be it a defeat in the super over to Delhi Capitals or their failure to chase down 180 vs LSG on Saturday, with 9 runs needed in the last over.
Time and again, the 2008 IPL winners have shown trust in young talent, as evident in their munificent investment in players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurel, captain Sanju Samson and Riyan Parag to name a few. Even 14-year-old debutant Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who took to the crease for RR against LSG was secured for 1.1 crore.
Amidst RR's struggles to conjure up anything significant in terms of wins this season, former Indian International and commentator Ambati Rayudu slammed the RR management and its decisions. He called out the side for their lack of preparation in the way they approached the IPL season and stressed that the side's priorities should be to compete and win.
Speaking on ESPNCricinfo's Timeout, Rayudu said, '…They've invested so much in youngsters over the years. What have they gotten out of it? It's been 17 years since they've won an IPL, and they always showcase this as if it's their strength. It is some great charity that they're doing for the game, but it is not. You're here to compete'.
Expressing his disapproval of the way the RR management runs the side, the six-time IPL champion added, 'You're here to win the IPL, and there are ways teams have adopted to win the IPL, and you don't follow any of those. And you want people to come on board and appreciate you for the good team that you are by giving youngsters all over the world a good opportunity in the IPL'.
The franchise's decision to retain middle order duo Riyan Parag and Jurel for the 2025 campaign has also come under significant criticism for their inability to chase down games for the side. Eight games into the season, RR is in 8th spot and firmly rooted to the bottom half of the table.

IPL Star, Who Faced BCCI Suspension, Takes 5 Wickets In 5 Balls. LSG Owner Sanjiv Goenka Says, "Breakout Star..."
Digvesh Rathi was one of the finds of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. The mystery spinner, who was bought by Lucknow Super Giants for just Rs 30 lakh, turned into one of their go-to bowlers, taking 14 wickets in 13 matches at a respectable economy rate of 8.25 in his debut season. While Rathi made several headlines with his controversial 'notebook' celebration, he has now gone viral for one of his on-field performances. Rathi had once taken five wickets in five consecutive balls in a local T20 match, the video of which has gone viral on the internet. Even LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka could not help but react. Rathi, playing in a local game in February 2025, left the opposition bamboozled with his trickery. Digvesh ran through the opposing batting order in one over, taking five wickets in a row - four bowled and one leg-before-wicket (LBW) - to finish with match figures of 7/28. The video was shared by Lucknow Super Giants (LSG)'s official social media media handle, and here is what owner Goenka said: "Stumbled upon this clip of Digvesh Rathi taking 5 in 5 in a local T20 game. Just a glimpse of the talent that made him a breakout star for LSG in IPL 2025," Goenka posted on X. Stumbled upon this clip of Digvesh Rathi taking 5 in 5 in a local T20 game. Just a glimpse of the talent that made him a breakout star for @LucknowIPL in IPL 2025. — Dr. Sanjiv Goenka (@DrSanjivGoenka) June 16, 2025 Going by the post, it appears that Goenka was unaware about Digvesh having ever bowled such a spell, despite it happening before IPL 2025. Given that the spell took place in February 2025, it would be well after Digvesh had already been purchased by LSG at the mega auction. Digvesh shot to fame in IPL 2025 for both his excellent bowling as well as his fiery 'notebook' celebration. Digvesh's explosive celebration was first seen when he dismissed uncapped Punjab Kings (PBKS) batter Priyansh Arya in LSG's third match of the season. Digvesh was handed a number of fines by the BCCI during IPL 2025 for his celebration. Later in the season, a verbal spat between Digvesh and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) star Abhishek Sharma saw him accumulate five demerit points, resulting in a one-match ban. "This was his third Level 1 offence under Article 2.5 this season and hence, he has accumulated Two Demerit Points, in addition to Three Demerit Points he had accumulated earlier - One Demerit Point against Punjab Kings on April 01, 2025 and Two Demerit Points against Mumbai Indians on April 04, 2025. As he now has Five Demerit Points this season - which result in a one-game suspension - Digvesh will now be suspended for LSG's next game - against Gujarat Titans on May 22, 2025 in Ahmedabad," the statement from IPL read.

Shubman Gill is mix of both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli as captain, says Jos Buttler
Mumbai, Jun 17 (PTI) India's new Test captain Shubman Gill is a mix of his predecessors Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli but he will be "very much his own man" in the middle when he leads the national side in the eagerly-awaited five-Test series against England starting on Friday, feels Jos Buttler. Buttler, the former England limited-overs captain who played under Gill in this year's IPL, said the 25-year-old will need to find a balance between his captaincy role and his own batting. "He's a really impressive player and an impressive young man," Buttler said on his podcast 'For The Love of Cricket' alongside former England pacer Stuart Broad. "He's pretty calm and measured when he speaks, but (it's) interesting, I feel like on the field he's got a bit of fight about him; a bit of intensity, quite passionate. I think he'll be a mix of Kohli and Rohit. "Kohli (was) that sort of real aggressive (character), really transformed the Indian team, in your face, up for the contest. Rohit was a bit on the other side, a bit more laid back, very cool, calm, collected customer, but with that sort of fight," he added. Buttler expects Gill to "be a bit in the middle". "He's obviously learned from those two guys… but he'll be very much his own man." Buttler said the job of captaining India in Test cricket is like being a "third or fourth-most influential people" in the country "He talked about compartmentalising batting and captaining; so when he's batting he just wants to be a batter, and then he will try and work on his captaincy and try and separate the two roles," he said. "I don't think we can quite understand the level of interest and the stardom that these guys have. You see it around the IPL, you're aware of it, but actually living that yourself... I think they say the Indian Test captain is like the third or fourth-most influential person in India, behind the Prime Minister, so you really are put up on that pedestal. "(There are a) one-and-half billion people, all cricket-mad, so it's going to be a huge job for him. Kohli is the king, Shubman is the prince: that's the narrative that they spin out there, and I feel that he's the coming into that No. 4, it's big shoes, isn't it?" "IPL teams as good as international teams" =========================== Buttler said the level of competitiveness in IPL, given its unique window, makes some of the teams in the competition as good as international teams. "I would say some teams would compete well, they are just as good as international teams. I think (a) Mumbai Indians XI had nine or 10 players who had played international cricket and they are just not any odd internationals either. "Obviously, the window the IPL has, there is no competition from international cricket, it has got its own designated window. All the best players in the world are available, all the local Indian talent where the depth is just growing and growing and growing," he said. "Suryavanshi's ton was inspiring and deflating" ============================== Buttler said 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi's 38-ball 101 for Rajasthan Royals against Gujarat Titans, which was the second-fastest IPL ton and fastest for any Indian in T20 cricket, was both "inspiring and deflating". "This guy is (about) 20 years younger than me, and he is just smashing us all around the park. Absolutely (sent) shockwaves throughout the cricket world," he said. "...the first ball, he gave himself a bit of room and smacked it over wide long on for a six... that fearlessness. I love these guys out there; there are so many brilliant players. They almost want to make a statement as in 'look at me'." Buttler also recalled Suryavanshi's knock of 57 against Chennai Super Kings and said, "I'm like 'this guy is the best player I have ever seen," he said.

Shubman Gill will be a mix of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma as captain: Jos Buttler
England batter Jos Buttler feels that India's new Test captain Shubman Gill will be a perfect mix of his predecessors Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Gill has been appointed as India's Test captain, following the retirement of Rohit Sharma. The 25-year-old will be leading the team for the first time in the longest format in the upcoming series against England, set to begin from June of Gill's first Test as captain, Buttler, who played under him in Gujarat Titans (GT) during the Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025), shared insights about his captaincy, mentioning that he's a mature man.'Yeah, there's a lot of buzz around this series. The IPL just finished, but even during that, there was huge interest in who'd become India's next captain. Shubman Gill is now leading the side. He was my captain at Gujarat Titans—an impressive player and a really mature young man,' said Buttler in a podcast with Stuart Broad. He also revealed that Gill possesses qualities of both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli as a leader and will be a perfect mix of both.'He's calm and measured when he speaks. But on the field, he has fight and intensity. He's passionate. I think he'll be a mix of Kohli and Rohit. Kohli brought aggression and in-your-face competitiveness, while Rohit is more laid-back—cool, calm, and collected. Shubman feels like he's somewhere in between. He's learned from both, but he's also his own man,' he has led India in five T20Is so far, during the tour of Zimbabwe in 2024. However, he doesn't have any experience of leading in Tests. He has played 32 Test matches in his career so far and scored 1893 runs at an average of 35.05 with five hundreds and seven fifties to his he doesn't have a memorable record away from India, having scored just 88 runs from three Tests played in England with the highest score of 28. Hence, the new captain has a massive task to turn his fortunes in the upcoming tour.
