Inter Milan hire Chivu as new coach

Observer4 days ago

MILAN: Inter Milan have chosen Cristian Chivu to lead the Serie A club into a new era, confirming the former Romania defender as Simone Inzaghi's replacement ahead of the upcoming Club World Cup.
"Inter Milan is pleased to welcome Cristian Chivu as the new head coach of the first team. The coach has signed a contract with Inter until 30 June 2027," Inter said in a statement.
Still reeling from humiliation at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final, Inter have gambled on novice Chivu after failing to get Cesc Fabregas from Como. Chivu has reportedly agreed a two-year contract with Inter worth 2.5 million euros ($2.85 million) a season, taking charge of one of Europe's biggest clubs only a few months after beginning his senior coaching career with Parma.
Parma confirmed Chivu's departure earlier on Monday, setting up his arrival at Inter where he won three Serie A titles and the 2010 Champions League as a player.
The 44-year-old replaced Fabio Pechia in February and guided Parma to Serie A safety in his first job in football of any form since leaving Inter's youth set-up last summer.
"I thank the club, staff, players and fans for having believed in me and our project," said Chivu on Instagram.
"Together we overcame obstacles and wrote a page (in Parma's history) which will remain in my heart."
Chivu's first match in charge of Inter will be against Monterrey in the Club World Cup next week, in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.
He will lead a group of players who looked dead on their feet during their 5-0 hammering against PSG in the Champions League final late last month.
Inzaghi left Inter in the wake of the Italians' thumping in Munich, taking the job at Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal who are also taking part in the Club World Cup. — AFP

Man City sign AC Milan midfielder Reijnders

LONDON: Manchester City on Wednesday announced the signing of Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan for a reported fee of £46.3 million ($62.4 million), with the midfielder eligible to play in the Club World Cup. The Dutch international midfielder, City's fourth signing of the week, said he was "ecstatic" to be signing for Pep Guardiola's side. The club announced deals for midfielder Rayan Cherki from Lyon and Chelsea's third-choice goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli on Tuesday while left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri joined from Wolves on Monday. Reijnders, 26, joined AC Milan from AZ Alkmaar in 2023 and scored 15 goals for the Italian club in 2024/25. He will bolster Guardiola's midfield options following the departure of Kevin De Bruyne. "I am ecstatic to be signing for Manchester City," said Reijnders, who has penned a five-year deal. "City are one of the biggest teams in the world, with the best coach, world-class players and outstanding facilities." After four consecutive Premier League titles, City finished a distant third last season and bowed out of the Champions League early. City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak admitted the club "probably should have been more aggressive" in the transfer market ahead of the 2024/25 campaign. The club's latest transfer activity continues an overhaul of the squad that began with the January signings of Omar Marmoush, Nico Gonzalez, Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis. City's director of football Hugo Viana said: "We are very happy that Tijjani has joined us and we're excited for him to join Pep's squad. "He arrives here with extensive top-level experience in Europe, both at club level as well as on the international stage with the Netherlands. "Tijjani adds extra energy, composure and creativity to our midfield and working with Pep and our coaches will only see him go from strength to strength." Guardiola's men will travel to the expanded 32-team Club World Cup as defending champions after winning the competition under its previous guise in Saudi Arabia two years ago. They open their campaign against Moroccan club Wydad Casablanca in Philadelphia on June 18. — AFP

Dortmund sign Jobe Bellingham five-year deal

BERLIN: Borussia Dortmund have signed English midfielder Jobe Bellingham from Sunderland until 2030, five years after bringing older brother Jude to the club. Dortmund announced the signing on Tuesday, the final day of the Club World Cup transfer window. "The England U21 international put pen to paper on a five-year deal with the eight-time German champions on Tuesday morning," Dormund said in a statement. Dortmund reportedly paid a fee of around 33 million euros ($37 million), with five million in additional bonuses, to secure the midfielder's services, the most the club has paid up front for a player. "I'm very happy to be a Borussia Dortmund player now and to fight for titles together with this great club," said 19-year-old Bellingham. "I want to play my part in celebrating success with these great fans here and will work on myself and with the team everyday. And I'm very happy that I'll be wearing the black and yellow jersey at the FIFA Club World Cup." Dortmund's transfer record remains the 35 million euros paid to bring Ousmane Dembele from Rennes in 2018 although this was originally 15 million euros which rose by 20 million in sell-on fees once the player transfered to Barcelona. "Jobe is an extremely talented footballer with an impressive level of maturity and intelligence on the pitch for someone so young," said Lars Ricken, BVB Managing Director for Sport. "We have no doubt that he's the perfect fit for our philosophy of developing talented youngsters and giving them the opportunity to improve and establish themselves at the highest level. "His professionalism, his dynamism and his hunger to succeed will make him a real asset for our team." At 19, Jobe is two years younger than his Real Madrid and England midfielder brother. In moving to Dortmund, Jobe will follow in Jude's footsteps of trading the Championship for the Bundesliga and the Westfalenstadion. After leaving Birmingham City, Jude spent three seasons at Dortmund and has become one of the most recognisable players in world football since joining Real in 2023. As he did at Sunderland, the younger Bellingham will wear 'Jobe' on his jersey at Dortmund rather than his last name in a bid to distinguish himself from his brother. Jobe scored four goals and laid on three assists in 40 games for Sunderland this season as he helped the club win promotion to the Premier League. Jobe's signing means the two brothers could face off in this season's expanded Club World Cup in the United States, if Dortmund meet Real Madrid during the knockouts of the competition. Jude Bellingham joined Dortmund from boyhood club Birmingham in 2020 aged 17 for around 23 million euros, a fee which rose to 30 million euros when a sell-on fee was added after his 100 million euro move to Real Madrid. He made 132 appearances in yellow and black, scoring 24 times and laying on 25 assists, and helped them win the German Cup in 2021 alongside Erling Haaland and Jadon Sancho. After leaving Dortmund, Jude faced off against his former side in the 2023-24 Champions League final, with Real winning 2-0 at Wembley. Jobe became the second-youngest Birmingham City player behind his brother when he made his debut aged 16 years and 107 days. He was named the young player of the season in the English second flight, again following in his brother's footsteps, five years on. Dortmund kick off their Club World Cup campaign against Fluminense on June 17. — AFP

Man City sign Rayan Ait-Nouri from Wolves for £31 million

LONDON: Manchester City have completed the signing of left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri from Wolves. The 24-year-old Algeria international has signed a five-year contract at the Etihad Stadium after the clubs agreed a fee of £31 million($42 million). He becomes City's first major signing of the summer, with AC Milan midfielder Tijjani Reijnders also set to join. Ait-Nouri will be eligible for the upcoming Club World Cup later this month, with City also looking to get Reijnders done in time. "I am incredibly happy and honoured to have joined Manchester City. City are one of the biggest clubs in the world and the chance to play for the club is a dream come true," he said. "I am also so excited about working with and learning from Pep Guardiola and his coaching team and getting to train and play alongside such a world class group of players. "I'm young and I came here to improve a lot. I need to learn and improve my football for sure — it's why I chose this big challenge. "I know I can improve my football and being in these kind of conditions with this team and this manager, for sure I will improve my football." Ait-Nouri has spent five years at Wolves, initially arriving on loan from Angers before signing permanently for £14.9 million in 2021. He is City's first left-back specialist since Benjamin Mendy, who played his final game for the club almost four years ago. Oleksandr Zinchenko, Joao Cancelo, Nathan Ake, Josko Gvardiol and -most recently — Nico O'Reilly have been among the players to fill the position since. "Rayan is a player that as a club we have been following closely for quite some time and we are delighted he has joined us," said director of football Hugo Viana. "He already has extensive Premier League experience and has also demonstrated his quality at international level with Algeria. "We feel sure that he will be an excellent addition to our squad and that working alongside Pep and his coaching staff will help develop his game even further. "And at just 24 he is someone we feel sure will help us in our objective to bring more success to the club." Veteran goalkeeper Scott Carson is to leave the club when his contract expires this summer. The 39-year-old made just two senior appearances in a six-year stint but was involved in squads that collected 12 trophies, including the Champions League in 2023. A statement from the club read: "Everyone at Manchester City would like to thank Scott for his hard work and dedication and wish him the very best of luck for the future." Carson initially joined the club on loan from Derby in 2019 before making the move permanent in 2021. — dpa
