'He didn't known where to get dinner...' Abhishek Bachchan recalls Amitabh Bachchan's darkest days, sacrificed college to clear his Rs 90 crore debt
Amitabh Bachchan is one of the biggest superstars that Indian cinema has ever produced. Known as the 'Shahenshah' of Bollywood, his journey to stardom has been full of highs, lows and crushing moments that tested his strength. While he conquered the world of cinema, the most toughest challenge came not on-screen, but in his personal life, when he started his own company and went bankrupt, leaving him with debts of nearly 90 crore.
Initially, Big B's career didn't start on a successful note. His first few films failed to impressed masses and critics. But in 1973, Zanjeer changed his destiny and he tested real success after that. From there, he rose to superstardom and gave Indian cinema some of his most iconic performances. When did Amitabh Bachchan shift his focus from acting to business?
However in mid-1990s, Amitabh Bachchan decided to venture into business by starting his own company, Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Limited (ABCL). Unfortunately, his entertainment establishment failed to run successfully, and became a nightmare. ABCL's financial mismanagement led him into massive debts of nearly Rs 90 crore.
At that time, Abhishek Bachchan, who went to Boston University for further studies, rushed back after he heard his father's financial struggles. He made a bold decision to quit college midway and support Big B.
While talking to Ranveer Allahbadia on his podcast, Abhishek had recalled, 'My father was going through this really rough time. He had started this business called ABCL… I said, I can't be here in Boston when my father doesn't know how he's going to get dinner. And that's how bad it was.' What did Abhishek Bachchan tell Amitabh during his lowest phase?
Abhishek said that it was his 'moral' responsibility to stand by his father's side. He then described how he told his father about quitting collage. Amitabh called him to his study late night and reportedly told him, 'Movies aren't working out, the business isn't working out, nothing is working out.'
But through it all, Amitabh Bachchan decided to fight back and never gave up. With the unwavering support of his family, Amitabh slowly built his career from the scratch. He went back to films, and took on some roles and did shows like Kaun Banega Crorepati to clear all his loans.
Today, at the age of 82, Amitabh Bachchan continues to work, inspiring generation of actors across with his hard work, dedication and perseverance.

Nivin Pauly and Abrid Shine booked for allegedly cheating producer; actor shares statement: ‘The truth will prevail'
A case has been registered against Malayalam actor Nivin Pauly and filmmaker Abrid Shine following a complaint by Mahaveeryar co-producer PS Shamnas, accusing them of financial fraud, police said on Thursday. An FIR under section 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 420 (cheating) of the IPC was registered on Wednesday night against Pauly and Shine. According to PTI, PS Shamnas has accused Nivin Pauly of not paying him the promised compensation of Rs 95 lakh after the failure of their film Mahaveeryar. As per the complaint, the actor had assured this compensation along with a partnership in his upcoming film Action Hero Biju 2, which was to be directed by Abrid Shine. Shamnas alleged that based on this promise, he invested a hefty sum of Rs 1.9 crore in Nivin's new project. Shamnas also claimed that while the new film was initially registered under his own production house — Indian Movie Makers — Nivin allegedly entered into a Rs 5 crore distribution deal with a Dubai-based firm. He further accused the actor of accepting Rs 2 crore in advance from the Dubai company and cited a prior agreement that showed the film being registered under Nivin's production banner, not Shamnas'. Nivin Pauly responded to the cheating allegations via social media, stating that a court-directed arbitration is already underway in the matter. He added that despite a gag order issued by the court, a new police case was filed by the co-producer. He wrote, 'The dispute has been under court-directed arbitration since May 28, 2025, with a gag order in place to ensure confidentiality. Despite this, a new police case has been registered in violation of the court's directives, suppressing the ongoing arbitration proceedings and distorting facts. We will take appropriate legal action. The truth will prevail.'

In Pune this week, Singapore comedian who has a witty name for Ranbir Kapoor's biopic
Stand-up comedian Sharul Channa's shows are packed with observations and comments on everyday matters, news, and social observations, and tend to leave audiences in splits. On June 19, Channa will perform her latest show Saree-ously Not Sorry at Godaam Specialty Coffee Co in Pune's Shivajinagar. Saree-ously Not Sorry, which explores current events and society, is a continuation of her earlier show, Saree Not Sorry, and taps into her Indian identity. Channa's father was from Delhi, and her mother from Punjab, and her family moved to Singapore when she was three. 'Although I have toured the world, performed in various cities, and grown up in a multicultural society, as an Indian woman, I believe that I, like many other Indian women, look best and beautiful in a saree. It represents our identity and dresses us up beautifully. I also plan on wearing sarees for all my shows, my entire lifetime. That's why Saree-ously Not Sorry!' she says. Trained in theatre at the prestigious Lasalle College of Arts, Channa combines theatrical storytelling with her stand-up performances, creating a rich experience. 'I read the news a lot, and I watch a lot of people. Touring across Southeast Asia has helped me connect more deeply with my voice and expression as a comedian. I have come to understand what resonates with audiences — especially in India — and where the invisible lines are drawn. I, now, know which jokes land, which ones don't, and which ones might get me an all-expenses-paid trip… to jail,' she says with a smile. She keeps a tab on Bollywood too. She says that when she found out that actor Ranbir Kapoor would be playing the role of Lord Ram in the film Ramayana, she kept thinking of his previous role in Animal. 'Now, if Ranbir Kapoor has a biopic, it will be called Kabhi Ram, Kabhi Haiwaan,' she quips. She also delves deeper into how people have been behaving lately. 'Lately, it feels like the world has turned into one big episode of reality TV, with frequent flyers, plane etiquette meltdowns, and relationship drama taking centre stage. We're constantly debating personal boundaries at 30,000 feet and questioning how we interact with one another on the ground. Amid all this, there's also the deeper question: Does the world need more children? Or do we need to first become better people?' Channa says stand-up comedians should take risks on stage, but they must also 'stand by it and take accountability'.
