Giants Star Key to Russell Wilson Signing
Giants Star Key to Russell Wilson Signing originally appeared on Athlon Sports. There are several levels to stardom in the NFL. There are good players on bad teams receiving merely the hype of a single fanbase. Then, there are blue-chip building blocks that quickly become locks to be extended. Between them and the true superstars taking over the sport are the players that the rest of the league puts stock in. Advertisement New York Giants receiver Malik Nabers hasn't emerged as a top-five receiver just yet. But he's good enough to lure in competent quarterbacks after a single season in the league. Joining '7PM in Brooklyn' with Carmelo Anthony, Russell Wilson raved about the Giants star and considered it a key reason why he signed with New York. 'I just turned on the film and watched this guy Malik Nabers,' Wilson said. 'This dude is a superstar. I saw him, watching the film before I tried to make a decision and trying to get a clear understanding of who the players are, this and that. Obviously, you see the highlights and everything else. But when you watch every single catch and every single rep and every play, you get to see the kind of player he is. He's dynamic. He touches that football, he's gone.' It didn't take long for Nabers to establish himself as an elite weapon. He logged two 100-yard games in the first four contests of his career. After suffering a concussion, he missed two games. Upon his return, he logged 118 more targets. Advertisement Ultimately, he finished with 170 targets, the second most in the NFL, despite his absence. Nabers turned that into 109 catches for 1,204 yards and seven touchdowns, all with bottom-barrel quarterbacking. Wilson isn't just an upgrade over Daniel Jones. He's an aggressive quarterback whose best throws come down the field, a hallmark of every offense he's been a part of. As a rookie, Nabers proved he was a No. 1 receiver with unlimited upside. In 2025, he'll have the trust and the talent around him to make good on that optimism. Related: NFC East Positional Rankings: Do Giants' Quarterbacks Matter? A Trump Official Threatens to Sue California Schools Over Trans Athletes
The U.S. Department of Justice on Monday threatened legal action against California public schools if they continued to allow trans athletes to compete in high school sports, calling the students' participation unconstitutional and giving the schools a week to comply. In a letter sent to public school districts in the state, Harmeet K. Dhillon, assistant attorney general for civil rights, said the California Interscholastic Federation's 2013 bylaw that allowed trans athletes to compete violated the Equal Protection Clause of the Constitution and discriminated against athletes on the basis of sex. 'Scientific evidence shows that upsetting the historical status quo and forcing girls to compete against males would deprive them of athletic opportunities and benefits because of their sex,' Ms. Dhillon wrote, referring to trans girls as males. Elizabeth Sanders, a spokeswoman for the California Department of Education, said on Monday that the department was preparing to send guidance to the state's school districts on how to respond, and that it would do so on Tuesday. The Justice Department's move came two days after a trans girl won championships in two girls' events at the California state track and field meet, and less than a week after President Trump decried her inclusion in the competition, saying that he would cut federal funding to the state if it let her participate. At the meet, held over two days in Clovis, Calif., the trans girl, AB Hernandez, won the girls' high jump and triple jump, and also finished second in the long jump for Jurupa Valley High School, in what is arguably the most competitive high school meet in the nation. In a statement provided by the group TransFamily Support Services, her mother, Nereyda Hernandez, said that it was her daughter's third year of competing in sports. Want all of The Times? Lions Urged to Consider Major Late Offseason Move
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Last season, the Detroit Lions were the best team in the NFL. Heading into the playoffs, many thought that a Super Bowl run would be in store. Unfortunately, in their first matchup in the divisional round, the Lions were defeated by Jayden Daniels and the red-hot Washington Commanders. That ended what had otherwise been an amazing season. Heading into the 2025 campaign, Detroit is looking to finish what it started last year. In order to do that, the Lions will need to have as much talent as possible on both sides of the football. Adding more depth would be wise as well after all of the injuries the team dealt with in 2024. Head coach Dan Campbell of the Detroit Lions celebrates after his team's touchdown against the Chicago Bears during the third quarter at Soldier Field on December 22, 2024 in Chicago, Illinois. USA Today analyst Tyler Dragon has connected Detroit to Za'Darius Smith. Of course, Smith finished the 2024 season with the team and played well after being acquired from the Cleveland Browns before the trade deadline. "Smith is at his best when he plays opposite a standout pass rusher at this stage of his career," Dragon wrote. "A sign that points right back to where he played last year in Detroit. Lions star edge Aidan Hutchinson was cleared to return for football activities in late May." Following his trade to the Lions, Smith played in eight games. He racked up 12 total tackles to go along with four sacks and a defended pass. In the previous nine games with the Browns, he totaled 23 tackles and five sacks. Depending on the price tag, Detroit should seriously consider bringing him back. Having too much depth is never a thing for a Super Bowl contender. Smith is about as good as pass rushing depth can get. While the Lions may not have interest in reuniting with Smith, he fits well with the Dan Campbell mindset. His career is also winding down, which would make returning to Detroit and competing for a championship a likely route he'd be interest in taking.
