Heart Celebrates 50 Years Of Rock At New York City Show

Forbes19-04-2025
Fifty years ago, the world was introduced to the music of Heart, led by sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson, via their debut album Dreamboat Annie. That record, featuring such now-classic tracks as 'Magic Man," 'Crazy on You' and the title song, launched a legendary decades-long career built on heavy rock and powered by Ann's commanding voice and Nancy's aggressive guitar playing.
Fast forward to the present amid more hit songs, albums and touring, Heart is marking that golden anniversary with the Royal Flush tour. It started last year but was later postponed after Ann Wilson announced she was diagnosed with cancer and underwent surgery. Thankfully, she has since recovered, and the tour resumed earlier this year.
The band returned to New York City for an engagement this past Wednesday at Radio City Music Hall, the last date of the tour's recent leg (Heart was originally scheduled to play Madison Square Garden last year before the cancellation). Playing in front of a sold-out crowd, the Wilsons — along with guitarists Ryan Wariner, Ryan Waters and Paul Moak, bassist Tony Lucido and drummer Sean T. Lane — rocked the house with the classics and then some.
Kicking off with 'Bebe Le Strange,' the title track from their 1980 album, the setlist verged between Heart's 1970s beloved hard rock staples (the aforementioned 'Magic Man' and 'Crazy on You') and mid- to late-1980s mainstream comeback hits ('Never' and 'These Dreams'). Some of their other well-known songs were reworked for the tour. For instance, the funky groove-driven 'Straight On' (from 1978's Dog and Butterfly album) seamlessly segued into David Bowie's 'Let's Dance." And Heart's dramatic power ballads from the '80s, 'Alone' and 'What About Love,' were turned into a medley.
Heart has long been associated with electrifying arena rock, and that came to the fore for most of the Radio City appearance. But there were some tender moments, specifically during the 'acoustic' portion of the set with the performances of 'Dog and Butterfly' and 'Dreamboat Annie.' Also keeping up with that reflective vibe, Nancy Wilson performed an instrumental tribute to the late Eddie Van Halen with '4 Edward' from her 2021 solo record You and Me.
The band, which has been a longtime admirer of Led Zeppelin, performed covers of the British rock icons' 'Going to California' and 'The Ocean.' The evening concluded in blistering fashion with the barnburning rocker 'Barracuda,' originally from the Little Queen album.
It was poignant to see the Wilson sisters perform together again as Heart following a hiatus that saw each of them do their side projects. Even more special was witnessing Ann Wilson back onstage following her surgery: she performed in a wheelchair that she previously said was not due to her recent battle with cancer but from an injury suffered during a fall. That didn't diminish her vocal ability, which remained as vibrant as ever, alongside sister Nancy Wilson's urgent rhythm guitar playing. On this occasion of their debut album's milestone, Heart's recent performance felt like a full-circle moment.
Opening for Heart's Radio City appearance was another music icon, Lucinda Williams. Like Heart, the Americana legend's set consisted of old favorites ('Joy,' 'Changed the Locks' and 'Drunken Angel'), somewhat recent tracks ("Rock n Roll Heart" and 'Stolen Moments,' written after Tom Petty's death) and renditions of other artists' songs (blues performer Memphis Minnie's 'You Can't Rule Me' and the Beatles' 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps'). She ended her show with a fiery cover of Neil Young's 'Rockin' in the Free World,' whose call-to-arms lyrics felt timely now as they did over 30 years ago.

Led Zeppelin's Blockbuster Album Debuts — More Than 50 Years After Its Release

45 years after Led Zeppelin split up, the legendary rock band is still regarded as not just one of the bestselling in the history of the United Kingdom, but also one of the most important. Countless musicians and groups that have followed in the decades since Led Zeppelin began releasing music have cited the act as an influence. More than half a century since the group's semi-self-titled Led Zeppelin II arrived, the project is not only back on a chart in the country that birthed the rock pioneers — it actually manages to debut on one list. Led Zeppelin II Debuts as a Top Download Led Zeppelin II appears on the Official Album Downloads chart for the first time this week. The full-length opens at No. 93 on the 100-space ranking of the top-selling titles on platforms like Amazon, Apple Music, and others. Led Zeppelin's First New Hit in Seven Years Led Zeppelin has now reached the Official Album Downloads chart with 11 projects, and it's been more than seven years since the group last collected a new arrival on the ranking. In April 2018, How the West Was Won opened at No. 83, and it hasn't been seen on the tally since. Mothership Continues to Lead Led Zeppelin first reached the Official Album Downloads chart in late November 2007. In the same week, The Complete, Mothership and Led Zeppelin IV all arrived. Of that bunch, Mothership is still the group's only No. 1, one of just two top 10s (including the act's self-titled affair), and its longest-running success. Mothership has spent 25 weeks as one of the most downloaded releases in the U.K. — more than all of the weeks accumulated by the band's other albums combined. Led Zeppelin II Produced one of the Band's Biggest Hits Led Zeppelin II arrived in late 1969, and the project became a quick commercial success on both sides of the Atlantic. In the decades since it first became available, the title has sold tens of millions of copies and produced one of the band's most famous singles. Even though Led Zeppelin is largely known as an albums act and not one that relied on hit songs, 'Whole Lotta Love' was pushed as a single from the full-length, and it hit the top 10 in the United States while also going platinum in the U.K.

Ada Choi on husband's heart problem: I felt so guilty!

19 Aug - Following Max Zhang's viral story about how he had a near-death experience with a heart attack back in April, Ada Choi recently shared her side of the story during the press conference of her new drama, "Behind the Queen". The actress, who was asked about Max's story, where he revealed he experienced a heart attack while she was waiting to ride the duck boat, shared that the actor actually felt unwell twice in March prior to their trip, but his ECG showed nothing worrying. "Then in April, while we were in Singapore having fun, he suddenly couldn't breathe, couldn't move, and couldn't speak. He had to sit down to the side. I was so bad, I actually left him to go ride the duck boat, thinking he just had a cold. But later, seeing how pale he was, I knew something was seriously wrong. After a while, he said he was okay," she said. Ada said that it was the next morning that Max finally told her what happened while tearing up. "He told me that at that moment, looking at the four of us, he thought that if he lay down, he might never get back up again and he had to force himself to stand up. He cried as he told me this. I had never seen him like that before," she said. The actress said that upon returning to Hong Kong, Max had to undergo angioplasty after further tests showed that one of his arteries was more than 80 percent blocked. "When I found out about it, I felt so guilty. I got down on my knees and cried, wondering how I could have failed so badly as a wife. I just hugged him and thanked God he was okay. If something had happened to him, I would've gone crazy," she said. Ada also assured that the actor is doing much better now, and that he has already returned to mainland China to film "Call Me By Fire". "He's fine after the surgery. He's very busy filming now, so we don't get to talk daily, but the production team is looking after him. So, I feel more reassured," she said. (Photo Source: Ada Choi IG)
