MPs raise several demands at Southern Railway meeting at Tiruchi
A mosaic of demands were raised by Lok Sabha MPs elected from constituencies falling under the limits of the Tiruchi Railway Division at a high-level meeting organised by Southern Railway here on Wednesday.
Introduction of trains, improvement of passenger amenities, provision of additional halts at chosen stations, increasing the frequency of trains, extension of existing train services and track doubling were among the host of demands raised by the MPs at the meeting.
The nearly three-hour long meeting, presided over by Southern Railway General Manager R.N. Singh, was attended by heads of various railway departments. This is the first meeting of MPs of Tiruchi division convened after the Lok Sabha elections in 2024.
A long-pending demand for doubling the mainline section from Thanjavur to Villupuram via Kumbakonam and Mayiladuthurai was raised by Mayiladuthurai Lok Sabha MP R. Sudha. The age-old mainline section with a single railway track at present was being used by over 25,000 passengers daily. However, it was yet to be converted into a double line stretch despite repeated representations from rail passengers associations.
The Mahamaham festival at Kumbakonam attracting devotees from various parts of the country was scheduled to take place in 2028. Unless, the section was made a double line stretch, it would cause inconvenience and immeasurable hardship to devotees, Ms. Sudha said and urged the railway administration to sanction the doubling project at the earliest and allot necessary funds to complete it ahead of the Mahamaham festival.
Restoration of the Mayiladuthurai - Tharangambadi railway line, operation of inter-city Tiruchi - Tambaram express via Mayiladuthurai on all seven days a week, introduction of a night train from Mayiladuthurai to Coimbatore and introduction of a day-time intercity express with chair coaches from Mayiladuthurai to Chennai and back were the other demands raised by Ms. Sudha.
Tiruchi Lok Sabha MP Durai Vaiko requested the railway administration to provide a halt of Tiruchi - Chennai Egmore - Tiruchi Cholan express trains at Tiruverumbur railway station near Tiruchi as it was surrounded by industries and institutions.
Mr. Durai Vaiko said he had also raised the delay in the demolition of the old bridge near the Tiruchi Fort railway station. The bridge serves as a crucial arterial link connecting major parts of Tiruchi city. While construction work by the State government on either side was progressing swiftly, the demolition of the old bridge by the railways was holding up the overall project. He requested the railway authorities to expedite the demolition and facilitate timely completion of the road overbridge.
The need for accommodating Rockfort express on platform 1 at Tiruchi Junction to benefit travellers especially senior citizens and persons with disabilities and introduction of an express train from Tiruchi to Kanniyakumari or Thoothukudi were among the other demands raised by Mr. Durai Vaiko.
Nagapattinam Lok Sabha MP V. Selvaraj sought the introduction of a daily passenger service from Agasthiyampalli to Tiruchi via Thiruthuraipoondi and Tiruvarur to benefit daily commuters. Expediting the modernisation works at railway stations taken up under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, early approval and sanction of funds for doubling the Karaikal - Thanjavur broad gauge section and extension of Punalur - Madurai express up to Karaikal were among his other demands.
Villupuram Lok Sabha MP D. Ravikumar sought the halt of Tejas Express at Villupuram since it was a major junction connecting various routes. Improvement of passenger amenities at Ulundurpet station such as provision of battery cars for the benefit of senior citizens and installation of display boards to indicate train arrivals, departures and coach positions besides provision of escalators at Villupuram Junction were his other demands.
Puducherry Lok Sabha MP V. Vaithilingam, Thanjavur MP S. Murasoli, Perambalur MP Arun Nehru, Cuddalore MP M.K. Vishnu Prasad, Tiruvannamalai MP C.N. Annadurai and Rajya Sabha members S. Kalyanasundaram and M. Shanmugam attended the meeting.
Mr. Singh explained the recent achievements and various initiatives taken to enhance passenger amenities across the zone.

Rahul's allegations on M'rashtra polls baseless: Karnal MP
Union energy minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Sunday refuted the recent claims by Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, regarding 'rigging' in the Maharashtra assembly elections, saying the public have already rejected them. Khattar was speaking to reporters on Sunday after concluding a workshop on the completion of 11 years of Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA government at the Karnal Lok Sabha constituency. The Karnal MP also took a dig at the Congress leader for his recent attempts to re-build party organisation in Haryana. 'They must have accelerated the process but the outcome is important. Even we are waiting that they are able to build the party structure at the earliest. I've offered them in the past that if they are not able to do so, they should hire someone from us as advisor,' he added. Earlier, he addressed the gathering that included cabinet minister Arvind Sharma and BJP MLAs from nine assembly constituencies of the Lok Sabha seat along with office-bearers of the party. Khattar said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the country is on the path of progress in terms of development and is receiving respect from all over the world. 'Not only this, other countries of the world have also been surprised by many big historical decisions which included the construction of Ram Mandir, abrogation of Article 370, strong opposition and fight against terrorism, ban on triple talaq for the respect of women, 33% reservation to ensure women's participation in politics, free ration and houses and toilets for the poor class, gas cylinders at affordable rates, distribution of Ayushman cards, Waqf law, among others,' he added. Minister Arvind Sharma said that on lines with the Union government, the BJP government has been formed in the state for the third consecutive time due to the elimination of the system of nepotism, regionalism and casteism and the transfer industry, job industry in the state by Khattar. Sharma counted on various social welfare schemes introduced under Khattar's tenure and taken forward by chief minister Nayab Singh Saini.

"Lot of money is wasted, no long-term goals are set": Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan advocates for 'One Nation One Election'
Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 8 (ANI): Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Sunday participated in the One Nation One Election campaign in Bengaluru, Karnataka, emphasising the need for simultaneous elections in India. Chouhan argued that the current system of frequent elections leads to a significant waste of resources and energy, highlighting that the constant election cycle diverts a major part of the nation's energy and resources, which could be better utilised for long-term development goals. He stressed that holding Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections together would enable policymakers to focus on policy-driven decisions rather than being preoccupied with election preparations. 'In our nation, all parties are immersed in election preparations, and a major part of our energy goes into that. Due to this, a lot of money is wasted, and no long-term goals are set. It is time the nation thinks about this. At least Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections should now be conducted together, so there is no waste of time, and we can take policy-driven decisions. For this, the One Nation One Election campaign is going on across the country,' he said. The One Nation One Election campaign aims to raise awareness and build consensus on simultaneous elections nationwide. The campaign's proponents argue that simultaneous elections would reduce the strain on the electoral machinery, minimise disruptions to governance, and promote more focused and sustained policy implementation. The Constitution 129th Amendment Bill, 2024, and the Union Territories Laws Amendment Bill, 2024, were introduced in the Lok Sabha during the Winter Session of Parliament to achieve one nation, one election. They propose simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and state assemblies across the country. The bill was referred to the JPC for scrutiny and discussion. Opposition members have been opposing the amendments and have argued that the proposed change could disproportionately benefit the ruling party, giving it undue influence over the electoral process in states and undermining the autonomy of regional parties. They have also argued that the bills proposing simultaneous elections are against the federal structure. On Sunday, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini said that the 'One Nation, One Election' initiative would help speed up India's development and reduce election-related expenses. Speaking at a marathon organised to support the proposal, CM Saini stated frequent elections stall growth and disrupt momentum. On March 25, the JPC held an important meeting that lasted over five hours. Several MPs in the committee raised concerns about the practicality of holding Lok Sabha and state elections together. The Constitution Amendment Bill empowers ECI to recommend to the President to postpone an election to a State Assembly. Currently, Article 356 of the Constitution allows for postponing an Assembly election only under specified conditions, which also involve approval by Parliament. The Bill does not have such requirements, and hence, it lowers the threshold for postponing elections. The Constitution Amendment Bill does not specify a time limit on the postponement of an Assembly election. This opens the possibility of a state being left without an Assembly. Legislatures in India have a term of five years. Elections to the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies were held together from 1951 to 1967. However, this cycle was disrupted in 1968 and 1969 due to the premature dissolution of some State Assemblies. In 1970, the fourth Lok Sabha was also dissolved prematurely. Since then, elections for Lok Sabha and State Assemblies have been held with different schedules. (ANI)

Kabrastan crisis could snowball into political plank for 2027 polls
Margao: The prolonged failure to establish a kabrastan for South Goa's Muslim community threatens to transform from an administrative hiccup into a potential electoral landmine that could reshape the 2027 assembly elections. Community leader Abdul Matin Carol's recent letter to the assembly speaker reflects mounting frustration over 'decades of unfulfilled promises'. The strongly worded missive demands immediate action on the long-pending burial ground issue, seeking a review of 'all pending assurances' and urging authorities to expedite the establishment of burial facilities statewide. The community recently launched a drive to secure proper burial grounds by directly appealing to village panchayats across the state. Community leaders cited constitutional obligations and govt directives that mandate panchayats to provide suitable burial grounds for all religious communities. The crisis deepened after the high court's Oct 2022 directive to develop the kabrastan at Sonsoddo 'within six months' remained unimplemented. More than two years later, technical assessments revealed only 2,500 sqm of the originally acquired 30,000 sqm land are usable due to terrain limitations. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Perdagangkan CFD Emas dengan Broker Tepercaya IC Markets Mendaftar Undo The community's anger has found political expression. 'In the last Lok Sabha elections, Muslim voters contributed to BJP losing the South Goa seat, sending a clear electoral message. Govt may ignore the demand at its own peril,' a political observer said. Community leaders have explicitly stated the kabrastan issue will be a 'deciding factor' in the 2027 polls. 'This issue is of great public importance and deserves urgent attention in the interest of justice, equity, and good governance,' Carol said, adding that delays have caused 'continued inconvenience and hardship' while raising concerns about the 'efficacy of assurances made in the assembly'. 'With Goa's wafer-thin margins that decide victories, consolidated opposition from any significant community can tip scales dramatically. Kabrastan is an emotive issue and it could override traditional voting patterns,' another political observer said. 'Opposition parties are likely to make political capital of this administrative failure, painting it as govt's insensitivity toward minorities.' Carol's request for a personal hearing by the speaker on the matter is seen by observers as the community's final attempt at resolution through established channels.
