(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: Sabah PAS is open to fielding non-Muslim candidates in the upcoming state election, expected to be held later this year. Its secretary Sahar Abdul Majid said such nominations would depend on the need and suitability of the constituencies PAS planned to contest under the Perikatan Nasional (PN) banner. He said this openness aligned with the party's long-standing 'PAS for All' principle and was not a new move, noting that the party had fielded non-Muslim candidates in the 14th general election (GE14). 'Our non-Muslim supporters' wing (DHPP) in the Sabah chapter is active, particularly among the Dusun and Chinese communities, with over 1,000 members to date,' he told FMT. 'In 2018, PAS fielded a non-Muslim candidate. This shows that Sabah DHPP plays an important role in garnering support from non-Muslim communities.' Non-Muslims fielded by PAS in GE14 included farmer Satail Mojungkat for the Kadamaian state seat in Sabah and the late R Kumutha for the Johor Jaya state seat in Johor. Satail lost to Upko's Ewon Benedick, who had contested under the Barisan Nasional banner, while Kumutha lost to Pakatan Harapan's Liow Cai Tung. Sahar said PAS was confident it could deliver a surprise outcome in the upcoming state election with more structured and strategic preparations, including nominating credible and capable candidates. 'The people of Sabah are showing a growing desire for change and better leadership,' he added. As for which seats PAS would contest, Sahar said the final decision would be made collectively with other PN component parties. Previously, PAS confirmed it would contest at least six out of the 73 Sabah state assembly seats. Sabah PAS commissioner Aliakbar Gulasan is currently one of six assemblymen appointed by the state government after the 2020 state election. PAS did not contest any seat in that election. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Sultan Ibrahim to make first state visit to Russia by Malaysian monarch

KUALA LUMPUR: The Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim will make history as the first Malaysian monarch to undertake a state visit to the Russian Federation, from Aug 5 to 10, 2025. The visit, at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, marks a significant milestone in Malaysia-Russia relations, which began with the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1967. In a statement, the Foreign Ministry said the visit underscores the vital role of the Malaysian monarchy in advancing the nation's diplomacy on the global stage. "The state visit not only serves to strengthen existing bilateral ties, but also opens avenues for new cooperation across various sectors, including trade, higher education, technology and innovation, and people-to-people engagement," it said is a statement. As Asean chair in 2025, Malaysia is also expected to play a key role in reinforcing strategic partnerships, particularly with Russia, which has been a dialogue partner of Asean since 1996. During the visit to Moscow, Sultan Ibrahim will be accorded a state welcome at the Kremlin, followed by an official meeting with President Putin. His Majesty will also attend a state banquet hosted by the Russian president. Sultan Ibrahim is also scheduled to visit several leading Russian innovation hubs, including the Central Automotive Development Centre (NAMI) and the Tochka Kipeniya Technology and Innovation Hub. Following the engagements in Moscow, His Majesty will proceed to Kazan in the Republic of Tatarstan on Aug 8. Tatarstan, a Muslim-majority autonomous republic within the Russian Federation, plays a unique role in fostering interfaith understanding and cultural exchange. While in Kazan, Sultan Ibrahim is expected to grant an audience to Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov and tour a local helicopter manufacturing and assembly facility. The state visit highlights Malaysia's commitment to exploring new diplomatic and economic frontiers while furthering international cooperation rooted in mutual respect and shared interests.

Unity key to strength, prosperity: Chief Minister

Published on: Saturday, August 02, 2025 Published on: Sat, Aug 02, 2025 Text Size: Hajiji, accompanied by Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun, flagging off the Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang at the National Month, Sabah Day and Fly the Flag Campaign 2025 launch ceremony. Kota Kinabalu: The unity of the diverse races and religions in Sabah is the key to the State's strength and prosperity, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. He urged all citizens to continue preserving the harmony enjoyed today as the most valuable legacy for future generations. 'Unity in diversity is Sabah's true strength. It is not a weakness, rather it is a uniqueness that we should be proud of and safeguard,' he said when launching the National Month, Sabah Day and Fly the Flag Campaign 2025 at The Magellan Sutera Resort, here, Friday. The Chief Minister said every individual is responsible for making places like schools, workplaces, business premises, places of worship and digital platforms to strengthen understanding, rather than sowing division. On the progress of Sabah's development, he said the achievements of the Hala Tuju Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) 1.0 as of May 2025 showed encouraging success, with an average implementation rate reaching 94 per cent of the 467 initiatives planned. 'Among sectors that continue to be prioritised are agriculture, industry and tourism, along with efforts to enhance human capital, the peoples' wellbeing, infrastructure networks and environmental sustainability,' he said. Hajiji said various forms of assistance have also been provided to the people, including access to education and introducing the Sabah People's Protection Insurance Scheme that offers comprehensive benefits to citizens. He also urged all segments of society to fly the Jalur Gemilang everywhere, as a symbol of loyalty and love for the nation. 'Today's launch is not just a symbolic event, but a call for us to understand the true meaning of independence - not just freedom from colonisation, but also freedom from poverty and division,' he said. The National Day and Sabah Day celebration, held every August, is a historic moment that reminds the people of the struggle of their forefathers in defending the homeland and the dignity of the nation. 'As Malaysians in Sabah, we have a great responsibility to safeguard the blessings of independence and continue this legacy of struggle,' said Hajiji. The launching event was marked by the handing over of Jalur Gemilang and Sabah flags to State and Federal Government departments and agencies, representatives of associations and the launch of the Merdeka Jalur Gemilang Expedition. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Concern over delay in findings

Published on: Saturday, August 02, 2025 Published on: Sat, Aug 02, 2025 Text Size: Zulkarnain said it decided to formally support the family's next steps, including suing the school and any parties who may have been negligent or complicit in the events leading to Zara's death. Kota Kinabalu: The Malaysian People's Power Movement (G57) raised concerns over the slow pace of investigations into the death of Form One student Zara Qairina, who is believed to have been the victim of serious bullying at SMK Agama Tun Mustapha in Papar. G57 pledged to provide additional legal assistance to Zara's family, including legal advice and representation, to help them seek justice through proper channels. Its Chairman Datuk Zulkarnain Mahdar said the movement had initially withheld public comment to allow authorities time to carry out investigations, but said the lack of progress has now become a cause for concern. He said it received complaints and informal reports suggesting that the investigation may be facing interference due to the possible involvement of a child linked to a person of high social standing. 'If the investigation is being delayed or shielded because of someone's title or influence, that is unacceptable. Legal processes must be allowed to run without obstruction,' he said, Friday. Zulkarnain said it decided to formally support the family's next steps, including suing the school and any parties who may have been negligent or complicit in the events leading to Zara's death. He said pressure would continue to be placed on the authorities to ensure regular, transparent updates are provided to the family and the public. Zulkarnain said Zara's death reflects a wider pattern of safety concerns within school environments, particularly regarding how bullying is handled. He said institutions must be prepared to take responsibility when safeguards fail and urged the Ministry of Education to review how such cases are managed at both school and district levels. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
